If you’ve read any early science fiction in the pulp magazines (mostly) of Gernsback, you’ll have seen Paul’s work. A nice survey here. This was rather an eye opener:

“It's interesting to note here that for almost every Gernsback cover painting that Paul rendered with paints, he also had to create a smaller version, rendered in black and white, with pen and ink. These were used for house ads to sell individual copies of Gernsback magazines and to entice readers to subscribe to the different publications.”

Good stuff.
