As promised...

This story is about a girl who is going to inherit a bakery and a boy who is to inherit a sushi shop. The problem is that the girl love sushi and the boy loves to bake so they make this plan to date one another and the one is hidden at first by the other. Tho things happen and they really fall in love with each other. Now that the girl is working at the sushi shop after telling her father that is her dream the boy has to decide to tell his family that he loves to bake and turn down his dead grandfather's wishes or turn down his dream of going to france with the girl's family and learning. They end up after all this drama with her staying with his parents and learning to be a sushi chef and he stays with hers to be a baker. Years past and they stay together. This Manga was a very sweet story, I enjoyed it alot and hope to read more from this manga artist/writer soon!

I felt from the very beginning that their joint plan should have been to marry into eachother's families and become the heir to the other. I mean, it would be like an heir switcheroo. It was the main roadblock in their relationship when it did not have to be. Well, sort of when the whole notion that the bakery was moving to France. Anyway-

The ending was anticlimactic. You got about half a chapter (not even) from when a final decision was made to the epilogue. 8 years later? Say what?! Then to only make sushi some of the time, sucks to be you. haha. I know that apprenticeships are about a decade (when you look at the nineteenth century), and by the end you are considered a master of the craft. So, when looking at it that way, Hana is probably close to sous chef rank.

Anyway- happy endings all around, even if I didn't get to enjoy them fully. I also wanted to know if Natsume got to play ball in college and/or if he was learning about pastries. But that's okay, I still enjoyed this a bunch!

*Update*
I have learned that to become a sushi chef, you are in an extremely long apprenticeship. By her being able to make even something as simple as the rice in a respected restaurant is more than a big deal. Well, rice seems simple to me, but when you think about it, it's more than that. I mean, in sushi it can be up to half of the dish. That would make it a big deal if it were messed up. Anyway, I wanted to include this update to ensure people that I am not completely ignorant of the process.

Pretty good series, but I think it could've been wrapped up a little better.

WHAT! THE!!! ...

Yes, Hanayu, you're awful. You're selfish! You're highly capricious! And, not to mention, you have a very high (unjustified) opinion of yourself!

People usually want their loved ones to "follow" their dreams, not hold them back by using their guilt against them while you get to live out yours?! And what? The next moment you suddenly feel angry because the other person is using you as an excuse to not follow their dreams?! HELLO! Did you forget you were trying to get them to do just that barely two pages ago?! And then suddenly you want them to follow their dreams?! Make up your mind, girl!

Honestly, what sort of characters are these?! Possessive is too weak a word. Even teenagers don't act like that! They won't let the other person go for a training/internship to another city/country and why not, I have no idea. It's like the author didn't even spare a thought of what the characters' motivation might be before making them act that way. Guess she just wanted them to yell and act over the top without thinking about whether it's even realistic or not.

And honestly, was this volume written BEFORE the rest of the story because in the earlier volumes they've made quite a few things clear to each other which are suddenly back to being secrets?!

What a messed up story. If I could rate it in the negative, I would!

DON'T! Just don't read it!

The very, very end always makes it or breaks it for me in a series finale and I honestly didn't enjoy the very end all that much. There wasn't really anything wrong with it, I was just... left feeling a bit displeased. Maybe it wasn't quite what I wanted and that's why. Who knows. But everything leading up to that point was very, very good. I even teared up a bit when Hayato found out more about his grandpa. It was a very touching and emotional volume and I'm glad that after these ten or eleven years, I finally rode Mixed Vegetables out to the end. I'm just... wondering if I should have skipped the last few pages, haha. I'm quite disappointed with how their relationship turned out. Perhaps it was too rushed. I don't know. But I did appreciate Hayato's heavy decision and how much thought was put into it. Making a life changing decision like that one (and Hanayu's as well) is a heavy burden but it must be done. I've been running away from such a thing for many years. Sometimes you can't move without someone pushing you to, and a heavy amount of courage.

Oh man, it’s over!!! *cries*
This volume was a little annoying with Hana trying to convince Hayato to go with her dad but it served its purpose. This volume gets 4 stars because personally, I HATE when the couple has to go long distance and wait for each other AND there was a huge time jump to the ending. But the ending was cute and it seems Hana was able to spark an interest in sushi for another little girl. The cycle repeats…

Overall, I give this series a 4.5/5.
I don’t know… I just really love this series. The characters just clicked for me. I especially loved the Hyuga family dynamic. I’m jealous. I want a family like that! (Maybe, I’ll have that in the future… )Anyway, this series starts off slow but it picks up by vol 3! I have no interest in culinary arts but I still enjoyed this series. Give it a chance!!!

In summary, everyone wants to do something for others, but at the same time, they want to realise their own dreams, and everyone is trying to fit those contradictions into their perfect world. What a waste when the story has a good beginning, and the story will be better if there are more positivity and challenges that they need to overcome to achieve their goals. Also, it will be more interesting if the story less focusses on adults' wishes as well as their "romantic" relationship. A big disappointment for me as I was so eager to read this manga before this.

A fast read (was able to finish all 8 volumes in just a couple of days), cute art, and at times quirky (broke the 4th wall just to poke fun at itself). Full of stereotypical shoujo-manga moments, and the ending seemed a bit rushed, but still entertaining for anyone fascinated by the culinary world and if you appreciate literature that deals respectfully with the struggle between pursuing your own life goals and the desire and obligation to uphold family tradition.

Honestly, the ending to this series lacked something, and I’m not sure what it is. More closure? More time? It felt rushed. It ended pretty much how I expected but I am disappointed in how it was executed.

This series isn’t bad but it isn’t spectacular either (although the art was its strongest point!). As a whole, it would be 2.5/5 stars for me.

4 STARS. Overall this series was really cute. It’s pretty simple and straightforward, not a lot of drama, but a cute couple. Which is weird for me because normally that kind of thing bores me to tears *cough cough Kimi no Todoke* Maybe it’s because they had such strong goals. Plus, I guess I like a lot more food shojo than I thought :)

But I will say without a doubt the BEST thing about this manga was the art. Rarely does a manga just totally hit the spot for me with art. Sure my favorite mangas have good art, but it isn’t often that I like the character deigns this much. It’s no Arina Tanemura detailed and princess-style art (my faaaavv), but the two main characters were just so CUTE-looking. Seriously. I don’t know why but I just wanted to stare at both of them forever.

Overall very cute series! <3

(Ooohh also the side ships, yes pleeease. There were four and I LIVE for that<3)

Are you ready for today’s review? Di you by any chance note something? If yes, then that’s great, f not well, this is the second time I’m featuring Ayumi Komura’s work on my blog. The first one was her longest serialization – Liar Lily. I loved the story a lot; so don’t be fooled by my rating. I was debating whether to give it 3.5 or 4 leaves, but, in the end, gave it 3.5 because when I looked back at what I read I didn’t really like the ending and I would have loved to see more of Hayato and Hanayu. I actually had to re-read the last 3 pages for 3 times to prove to myself that those two stayed together. I really wanted to see their kid or a bit more affectionate those two. But well we get what we get.

But let me elaborate a bit, so you are not so left out. Meet our main characters: Hanayu – she’s the daughter of patisserie and wants to be a sushi chef, and we have Hayato on the other hand – the successor of Hyuga sushi shop, who wants to become patisserie. Perfect combination if you ask me. They just need to switch places and everything would be fine. Or just marry into each other’s family. And well both of them had the similar ideas, but what if their plans are ruined or some of them have some obligations to fulfill? That’s for you to find out how they actually reach their happy end. And believe me, they will, but not without many arguments, threats and even break ups.

I loved this story. It was fast paced and fun, as always the author made a huge accent on the guys, drawing them really well. I didn’t really care about Hayato, his and Hanayu’s dads were drool worthy. Well, it’s if you love Komura-sensei’s art style. I got so used to it after reading Liar Lily that I found it very easy and fun to read. The biggest mystery was the gender of the culinary class teacher. So if you’re new to this series, please share your hypothesis with me thanks!

What else did I want to cover here? Oh, right. I actually bought all 8 volumes from book depository (the link is above) it’s in English. But if you like reading online and prefer mangafox to mangahere, this time, you’ll have to compromise. As on mangafox there’re only 6 volumes while on mangahere are all 8. I had the similar happen in a few other mangas too.

Are you ready to find out how Hanayu and Hayato reach their dreams? Don’t forget that this is a cooking manga and you might find some useful recopies or just information there. I actually made a note to cook one of the things there. I hope you’ll find some time to read this fantastic story, it does lack in the romance department, but it’s still fun and interesting to read! Enjoy it to its fullest and don’t forget to share your thoughts below! Stay tuned for more reviews as well as promos. Don’t miss your next favourite book or manga! Happy reading!

XOXO

I got attracted to its synopsis that goes like this:

"The plot revolves around Hanayu Ashitaba, a chef in training. Hanayu is the daughter of the celebrated pastry shop, Patisserie Ashitaba, but all she wants to do is become a sushi chef. Hayato Hyuga is the son of the prestigious Sushi Hyuga, but he wants to be a pastry chef. They go to Oiwaka High School together. Hanayu knows she will break her parent's heart if she does not continue the bakery and become a pastry chef, but thinks if she marries Hayato, they will understand her decision."

Mainly because it's about FOODS...

...and because I liked the idea of someone going against his/her parents' dream to chase her own.

So when I read the first volume, I was kinda confused and bored but as I read the following chapters, I become hooked to it. I know the romance of the story is kinda short but there's something to it that I liked. I don't know what is but I just liked it. I focused more on how they confront their hesitations of reaching their dreams more than how their relationship develop. Ha-ha. There is just some dull chapters but I think it's okay. I'm satisfied of how things ended in this story but not enough to give 5 stars to it.

This was a really sweet series about following your dreams and doing what you're passionate about, and about the logistical difficulties of doing so when you and your loved ones want different things. I enjoyed the way the two main characters finally figured out how to do this (after much drama and angst, most of it self-inflicted) and still managed to keep their relationship intact (though at the end there are no illusions that it's an easy situation). Both Hanayu and Hayato are extremely driven characters, who are also extremely loyal to their families and extremely reluctant to disappoint their loved ones. Luckily both have families that want them to be happy, so it all works out in the end... I wonder what the story might have been like if one or both of their families had been less understanding about their goals. In any case, Komura told the story well, the art is great, and I love that the entire story was told in only 8 volumes--so rare to find a series so concise and without tons of filler these days! I'll definitely be interested to see what she ends up working on next.

Over all, I loved this series. And I admit, I totally cried reading these final chapters. BUT, it felt like a really abrupt ending. I realize that Komura-sensei was probably ready to move to a new project, but at the same time... I sort of feel like she cheated her characters out of half of their story. I'd be curious to read what happened in the 8 years between Hayato leaving for France and coming back --other than that they both became (and are still becoming) proficient in their chosen fields and are 'happily ever after'.

Also, how did Hayato manage to open a bakery where Patisserie Ashitaba was 8 years before? I hope to god the building wasn't vacant for that long because holy crap that probably fell into some disrepair. Did the Ashitaba's rent it out or something? Jeez. Plot holes!

But okay, I'm nitpicking. Over all, a great series and I really enjoyed it.

Its the last book of the series and the ending didn't really surprise me because the ending was predictable. The couple in the book obtains their dreams and marry and then live happily ever which was really plain compared to other manga series. Even though the ending was really predictable i liked how completed it was because the author finally reveals all the secrets that revolved around the main and side characters in the book and resolves them. For example, i thought it was sweet to know that the grandpa of the main boy wants his grandson to do what he wants to do if he doesn't want to become a sushi chief when he grows up because dreams change.

Really loved this series. This is the first manga series I started. I read the first 4 books a while ago and then I finished the last today and yesterday night. There were some things I of course didn't like such as the some of the little fights and drama that would come up but overall I really like this series. For me though, it could get a little confusing because recently I read a few Kitchen Princess (another manga series) stories and they are a bit similar.

I recommend this series!

While I enjoyed reading this manga, I feel the last volume was rushed and the ending left much to be desired. There is an opening for the series to be continued though that is unlikely to happen. Overall, this was a fluffy manga that featured plenty of delicious recipes that I wish I could have tasted myself.

The ending was a bit abrupt, but I'm glad to see everyone happy. Looking at the series as a whole, I liked it. It wasn't amazing but it wasn't terrible. I give it a solid 3 stars out of 5. Not something I would want to read again though.

Perfect end to a lovely, quirky series. May have taken me much to long to get around to collecting all the volumes, but it is satisfying now that I have them all (I have had vol. 1-5,8 for a loooong time XD and only recently got 6&7).
