Jackson, MS is a city full of history and culture. It's also a city suffering from local, state, and national neglect.
In August 2022 when newspapers announced that the city had issued a boil order for the city's water, many were reminded of Flint, Michigan, and other working class, primarily Black cities around the country who have been left without a vital service for days, weeks, months, and years.
Safe drinking water is a human right.
The rising crises around water are worrying, and it is easy to be overwhelmed by so many concurrent crises. However, the desensitization of many to the pain and suffering of Black people spurred the creation of the CURRENT ANTHOLOGY.
I'll admit I dug volume 1 a tiny bit more but I still enjoyed it overall. I think Reverie by J. Chary was my favorite in this one. But the important thing is the cause that the whole book is for, which I'm glad to help out with in however small a way.
A Story About Hot Sauce By Sheree L. Greer - 3 stars. A Sapphic love story told out of order. Dayo is a teacher and community activist while Alicia works in PR and is conflicted about working in a place where white makes right.
Madi and Marie: A Langston Lake Novella By Tia Love - 4 stars. I really, really liked these characters but this story doesn't work as a novella. It needs way more pages to fill in the gaps. Madi and Marie are OK, but everyone around them needs a lot more to fit into this story as it's currently structured. And the ending was completely rushed. More, please.
Cherie and Omar Get Married…Finally by Elysabeth Grace - 3 stars. It's sweet and sexy but obviously part of a series and I didn't feel like I understood who all the secondary characters were or why they were important.
Honey Dip by Katrina Jackson - 4 stars. A multi-era story of an adult daughter come home mixed with the night her parents began their relationship. Family, home and love.
My One and Only Love by D. Rose - 4 stars. A sweet and sexy second chance love story between a painter and a public relations expert. The I wish the paintings had been included; they sounded amazing.
Reverie by J. Chary - 3 stars. Hookup turns into a monthly date turns into love. It's mostly sex, but it's good sex.
The Love That Remains by Tasha L. Harrison - 5 stars. This is a gorgeous story about a widow who travels to her late husband's home town of New Orleans for what would have been their tenth anniversary. She is romanced by his childhood friend who created the anniversary gift ordered by her husband before he died. It's not an HEA but there's the hope of more. I would read more stories about Carlotta and Enoch.
