Ricky Dene Gervais is an English comedian, actor, director, producer, writer and broadcaster.
Gervais achieved mainstream fame with his television series The Office and the subsequent series Extras, both of which he co-wrote and co-directed with friend and frequent collaborator Stephen Merchant. Besides writing and directing the shows, Gervais played the lead roles of David Brent in The Office and Andy Millman in Extras. Gervais has starred in a number of Hollywood films, assuming leading roles in Ghost Town and The Invention of Lying. Gervais has performed on three sell-out stand-up comedy tours, written the best-selling Flanimals book series and starred with Merchant and Karl Pilkington in the most downloaded podcast prior to March 2009, The Ricky Gervais Show.
He has accumulated a multitude of awards and honours, including seven BAFTA Awards, four British Comedy Awards, three Golden Globe Awards, two Emmy Awards and the 2006 Rose d'Or, as well as a Screen Actors Guild Award nomination. In 2010 he was voted third greatest stand-up comedian of all time by Channel 4, behind Richard Pryor and Billy Connolly. In 2010, he was named on the Time 100 list of the world's most influential people.
Flanimals is one of those series that Sean and I adore and the rest of our family things were stark raving mad for all our giggling over them. The first two books in the series we managed to find via the library so when Flanimals Pop-Up by Ricky Gervais came out we had to get a copy.
The Flanimals books also seem to give booksellers and librarians headaches. Some places shelve the books with adult humor because Ricky Gervais is mostly known for his work on things like The Office. The other half shelve them in the children's section.
The book is a short but funny revisit to the Flanimals who showed up in the first couple books. The pop-out creatures are complexly articulated so I recommend the book to children old enough to be careful with the book. The Mernibler page might also scare younger children.
Atheist parents rejoice? Maybe, but it's only a small jab at believers in this book. The rest of the time it's just all around fun book. And what else did you expect from Ricky Gervais? So what if his dry humor (humour?) is lost upon Americans? As an American who finds this man hilarious, you all should just sit everything out. Quote me on that, if you'd like.
So what is a Flanimal? The grotesque creatures that are part of the unknown world. And perhaps it's better that way because these creatures are ugly. Written as a field guy for the unknown, this pop-up edition is nothing but page-after-page of fun. So much so, you might want to keep this one for yourself. Read it while the kids go to bed. Go ahead, have fun.
This book is so so fun. My daughter loves playing with the pop ups and when I read it to her I make the flanimals move so it looks like they will eat or attack her. We have lots of fun with this but most importantly the 4 year old will sit and read this over and over BY HERSELF allowing mom to get a few chores done or dinner cooked.
I think the pop-up is fun, and the non-fiction style of "teaching" about the pretend creatures is fun. I only wish that this pop-up book full of information was really non-fiction. I think kids would soak up a book like this about real animals...
wow quite possibly the most imaginative and creative pop up book for kids AND adults ever written. Gervais really loves animals, and one need look no further than these awesome creations for evidence.
