Next of Kin
first installment in the anthology and what a great intro, smooth world building without any info dump which is much appreciated. The story and main characters’ backgrounds were interesting and good, despite being very short.
Red Sands
this one was more interesting and fun to read, it continued on the same wonderful flow of narrative,and it has a single point of view this time which I prefer; it was funny at times and characters from the first one appeared as well. The case was my favorite one!
Touching Sparks
to me here, the romance setup was the only interesting part of the story with tags like: detective/informant, age gap, old neighbors to lovers. I did not appreciate the sexual ogling at the funeral scene, writing it in such a way is poor taste, insensitive, inappropriate, crass and vulgar.

I don’t think its a surprise to anyone that I am partial to a bit of novella action (cue me presenting my GR novella shelf like that one Will Smith meme) and this one was a fun example of its genre.
I do think that this book cheats a little bit, in that, whilst it consists of 3 novellas, they all exist within the same universe and are loosely interrelated, and as such they aren’t required to start world building from scratch each time and can build on the world building established in the story prior, which I also suspect explains why each subsequent story get slightly shorter (noting that story 1 ‘Next of Kin’ is about 3 hour, story 2 ‘Red Sands’ is around 2.5 hours and story 3 ‘Touching Sparks’ is about 2 hours).
Hell Cop covers three action packed stories set in a low fantasy, urban gritty world where demons co-exist with humans and there is a department of elite detectives called Hell Cops, who have sorcerer powers and are tasked with handling demon related crimes.
‘Next of Kin’ was probably my favourite, with touch starved Hell Cop Jay Yervant, who’s powers manifest in his bare skin incinerating anyone who touches him, finding a mysterious young man being pursued by demons, who for unknown reasons, can touch him.
‘Red Sands’ was a close second with Michael Gold, the half demon anthropology professor with touch based telepathy, coming under suspicion of a murder and the investigating Hell Cop being an ex hook-up who provides Michael with scenes of explicit fantasies every time Michael touches him.
‘Touching Sparks’ was probably my least favourite, with James Sparks being a young criminal informant for a Hell Cop who is trying to bust an underground demon fighting ring. The story and action here was fun but the romance was, in my opinion, the most under developed of the three.
I haven’t decided yet if I will follow up with Hell Cop 2. I listened to and very much enjoyed this by audiobook, and have no pressing desire to change over to the written version. Also, whilst sequel to our three couples, they are all set in a farther off future and I am honestly pretty happy with how all three of these wound up here.

4.5 stars - I liked all three of the stories in this book. The world-building was well done, clear and vivid without any info-dumps. The characters were all appealing, the plots were interesting and took precedence over the sex scenes, (which were nice too.) Each of these could easily have been a novel. By writing them at novella length with lots of plot events, there was perhaps not time to go quite as deeply into the characters as I'd have liked. But it's a minor quibble. If you like fantasy and action plots, and several takes on hot guys who face obstacles to being together, give this one a try. I'm buying the next book ASAP.

Amazing world-building! I’m not normally one for anthologies/novellas but I have really enjoyed these. Immersive demonic universe, interesting characters. Would have loved for these all to be fleshed out full stories. This originally came out in 2008 and I think it holds up exceptionally in the paranormal genre especially for being 17years old. It’s rare for me to find newly published paranormal books that I really enjoy and these 3 all boast excellent writing skills.

I enjoyed this authors fantasy The Archer's Heart series many years ago and the writing was also strong here. Interesting story about a Hell Cop - a paranormal police officer who has powers to fight the demons that co-exist on this astral plane and Brian, a seemingly regular human. This started with a bang when the hospital Brian is working at has an influx of people attacked by demons and Detective Jay Yervant arrives covered in flames, I was sucked in immediately.

An author I’m not familiar with. Again the first scene had me completely riveted - half demon/half human Professor Michael Gold is travelling in a portal between worlds after undertaking some research when suddenly something is sucked into the portal with him - a dead man.
Touching Sparks by Ginn Hale
I’ve long time been a Ginn Hale fan, her creative mind is on a level that wows me. This was very memorable with a genuine jump scare moment, a nice injection of wry humour (that bunny suit 🐰 ) and a strong action filled plot involving undercover Criminal Informant James Sparks and the multi-layered Hell Cop Ben Moran.
The narration was very good - 3 solid narrators. No complaints.

I absolutely loved this anthology! My favorite story is probably the first one (written by Astrid Amara), but I loved them all. In all three stories the focus is more on mystery/crime solving than on the romantic aspect, which suited me just fine. I'm looking forward to reading the next one in the series!

Next of Kin by Astrid Amara, narrated by Tristan James
I loved the story, but the narrator sounded kind of like he was bored, or like a talking head. Really made me enjoy the story less.
Narration rating - 3 stars
Red Sands by Nicole Kimberling , narrated by John Solo
Again, love the story, the narrator is kind of irritating. Has the unfortunate habit of chopping up sentences like there's.a.full.stop.after.every.word, kind of like Jeff Bridges does lately in his movies. And he also sometimes does what I named "the rolercoaster" where he starts a sentence low, gets higher and higher until it seems like he ran out of air, and then just drops his voice for the final part. In one sentence. Jesus.
Narration rating - 2.5 stars

It's probably not fair of me to review this one since this is far from my favorite genre... I did enjoy the last story though. And the audio performed by Tristan James, John Solo, and Kirt Graves were all well done.

Written by Astrid Amara - Good, if a bit rushed. Nice intro to this anthology. Decent world building and Brian was adorable with his nervous chatter. But Jay's so hot (literally) that no one can touch him. Except Brian. Good thing they like each other .
Narrated by Tristan James - He's not terrible, just ... mundane. If you'd rather have books read to you than performed, here's your guy. But this will be my first and last audio from him.

Written by Ginn Hale - Easily the best of the bunch, writing wise. James is an informant so of course his hell cop, Moran, is all kinds of inappropriate with him. There's corruption and something about a fighting ring. At least these characters already knew each other (sort of) and she didn't rush to the sex like the other two, so I had more time to care about the characters. Still skipped most of the sex scene though.
Narrated by Kirt Graves - This is also my first from this narrator, and he was the best of the bunch as well, though he could improve on his female voices as well.
What do hell cops do? Other than have inappropriate sex with people they shouldn't? Why do authors feel the need to squeeze sex scenes into short stories which, by their nature, are already running short on time to establish the characters, their conflicts and the world they live in? Especially when it's a world as complex as this could've been. I definitely like the idea more than the stories that resulted from it, and frankly, I'm already forgetting details and things are starting to blur together. I won't remember any of these in another day or two.

Hell Cop is a collection of three stories from three authors set in a shared world where the paranormal is the normal. Supernatural crime is taken care of by the Metropolitan Demonic Unit aka the Hell Cops.
Next of Kin by Astrid Amara is my favourite of the bunch. This one follows Jay Yervant, a Hell Cop whose immense power has the unfortunate side-effect of burning anyone he touches (very X-Men Rogue-esque). Enter Brian, sheltered from his upbringing and new to the paranormal world. It turns out he's able to touch Jay with no problem. But he's not out of danger as it seems there's a target on his back. I loved Jay and Brian's dynamic and the intensity that Jay's burning touch brought to the relationship in the beginning.
Touching Sparks by Ginn Hale is a close second. James Sparks discovers a crime ring abusing demons and getting people hooked on the drug that's harvested from them. He goes undercover for Hell Cop Ben Moran, to get evidence of those in charge and shut it down for good. This one was actioned paced and had a lot of tense moments of danger. The romance between James and Ben wasn't at the forefront, but was still a great time!

Three authors, one world, three different pairings. Overall the idea to let three authors loose in a shared world is great and the resulting stories definitely feel like they connect in more than one aspect. The worldbuilding is interesting and exactly the kind of urban fantasy I personally like. Just close enough to the real world to be recognizable and yet augmented with fun supernatural aspects.
Unfortunately I didn't I didn't love all the stories equally.
"Next of Kin" by Astrid Amara (4 stars) is the first and longest of the stories and set the scene perfectly. I loved the pairing, there was steamy smut and the mystery was interesting. When the story kept going I did wonder what the other stories were going to be like since there was only so much page count left...
...and my fears were came true with the next one. "Red Sands" (3 Stars) by Nicole Kimberling definitely suffers from being about 10K words too short. Neither the mystery plot nor the romance has enough time for decent development. Both suffer as a consequence and I ultimately could have done without the mystery aspect altogether for more world-building and deeper characterization.
The last story of was definitely the weakest in my book. "Touching Sparks" (2 Stars) by Ginn Hale had the pairing that interested me the least. I stuck it out for the additional world-building.
Overall this is a great idea with uneven execution that was interesting enough to make me want to check out the next part for sure.

All the authors of this book are new to me.
Loved the version of Hell Cop written Astrid! I think she explains the why hell cop is on fire much better. I would give it 4.5 star.
Nicole's version was also good. 4 star.
Did not like Ginn's version. Felt it was just an undercover story. 3 star.

Definitely one of the best anthologies I read this year. I picked this one because of Astrid Amara, and I found out that ALL of the stories here are well-written. I love the fantasy story about Demonic Cop Unit dealing with demon activity. I can't even decide which story is my favorite because I basically love them all

An excellent collection of three fantasy stories about hell cops. Cops with special powers who police both demons and humans. I enjoyed each story and will be following up with book 2.

* I was so surprised that the story I expected to be most swept by was
not the one I thought it would be.

Wow, what a surprise this one was. I haven't read anything by the author
so didn't know what to expect.
I loved it. Astrid Amara had the difficult task of building a relationship
between characters in a short story, that didn't know each other previously
and I think she did great.
Great world and character building and I am sure to check out her other
series.
My only remark would be I wish it was longer, however there's a book two, so
I can't really complain, right?

Ahh....Honestly, I picked up the book because of Gin Hale...I love her. She createst some
of the most complicated and badass male characters ever.
Relentless even if you like.
And Moran was one of those, granted. I was soo looking forward to his story and learning
more about him..
However, his relationship with James didn't really keep me
guessing where everything is going, or on edge. It started off great, and at some point it was borderline boring...
Enough with the characters.
Now, as you can see from the blurb, each story is featuring different characters, but they're all connected, so it was real fun seeing characters from one story showing up in the other one.

Now, as you can see from the blurb, each story is featuring different characters, but they're all connected, so it was real fun seeing characters from one story showing up in the other one.

In Parmas City, demons and sorcerers live among ordinary people. Hell Cops serve as the city's law enforcement unit. They rid the populace of illegally ported demons and rogue sorcerers. Jay, Argent, and Ben are three Hell Cops charged with helping to maintain the peace and order in the city.
Next of Kin by Astrid Amara
Jay Yervant is a very powerful Hell Cop whose bare skin can incinerate anyone he comes into contact with. Brian Day sees Jay while working his shift in the hospital and is drawn to him. To Jay's surprise, Brian is able to touch him with impunity. Jay and Brian begin a sweet romance but must first overcome a malevolent sorcerer who unleashes a host of demonic assassins against Brian.
I felt so sorry for Jay. I can't imagine how lonely one would feel without any physical contact whatsoever. Although his flaming skin was an incredibly effective and lethal weapon in a fight, it truly was the bane of his existence. Isolated from his family and friends because of his "power," I was so happy when Jay struck up a relationship with Brian. But, oh the pressure. Not only is Brian the person Jay loves, he is also the only person he can physically touch! This story was entertaining and had the most world building. Although I liked both MCs, I felt this story was a little slow moving at times.

Michael Gold is a half-demon/half-human anthropologist returning from a trip to another world. During portal transport, he collides with the corpse of his estranged cousin. When he gets home, he finds his apartment ransacked, his dad missing, and himself at the top of law enforcement's suspect list for murder. Someone is out to frame him but Michael has no idea who or why. He doubts that he will receive fair treatment from the city's Hell Cops but is pleasantly surprised (and very attracted to) Argent - the detective assigned to his case. Argent and Michael had one prior intimate encounter that neither has forgotten. As they work together to solve the mystery surrounding Michael's woes, they fall for each other.
I liked the mystery aspect of this story. I also liked both MCs. This one moved faster than the first story but the ending felt a little rushed.

Detective Ben Moran is the hard-bodied Hell Cop determined to take down the criminal king pin. Moran has known James since he was a teen. Despite his determination to make the bust, he worries for James' safety. The tragic and traumatic loss of his previous lover has left Moran scared to love again. James has been attracted to Moran forever and hopes beyond hope that one day Moran will see him as the man he is and not the boy he was. Moran is secretly attracted to James but is hesitant to get involved and wonders if he should given their age difference. When James uncovers evidence of police corruption, however, their fight to be together becomes a fight for their lives.
This was my favorite story of the three. I loved both MCs and found the mystery riveting. The story was fast paced and very entertaining. I'm a fan of May-December romances but am wary when the timeline goes back to childhood. Happily, there was no ick factor here! James was all man (no boy) and adorable while Moran was hotness squared. Yum!
Bottom line: a nice anthology set in an interesting world. I would note, however, that Parmas City is a dark place inhabited by dark beings. It's not a happy-happy-joy-joy place and the people (and demons) are capable of doing pretty horrendous things. Another consideration is that all of the stories had an HFN ending. Perhaps this is because there is a sequel and all three stories are continued there. I hope so. The problem for me is that I'm not sure I'm invested enough to read it.

Note: The four star rating is not an average of the three stories' ratings, but my opinion based on the anthology as a whole.
I only started getting into anthologies ever since I read Irregulars, and thoroughly enjoyed the shared-world anthology. So it doesn't come to much of a surprise that I enjoyed Hell Cop, another shared-world anthology featuring three of the four authors that contributed to Irregulars.
Next of Kin is the lengthiest of the three stories (~40% of the story!) by taking the time to construct this paranormal universe where multiple worlds are connected by portals. The paranormal and mundane live in concert within Parmas City, where the hell cops are tasked with keeping order among the demons and sorcerers that run amok. Next of Kin had a nice balance between the romance and mystery. Featuring hell cop Jay Yervant and civilian Brian Day, Next of Kin is a nice introduction to the rest of the anthology. Rating: 4 stars.
Red Sands is my least favorite of the three stories, featuring anthropologist and half-demon Michael Gold with hell cop Argent. I couldn't feel very invested with Michael, since the story had a lot of telling and not a lot of showing. He also came off as selfish and the chemistry between him and Argent didn't make much sense to me. The mystery also fell flat as well. Overall, the story was alright, but nothing breathtaking. Rating: 3 stars.
Touching Sparks is my favorite story. It is also the only story that features a "normal" human character, James Sparks. While the mystery in the story wasn't very interesting, the execution and thrill of action definitely made it a step above the other stories. It was also nice to see how a normal human can persevere and stay strong in the face of the paranormal, compared to the characters in the previous stories that had some kind of special skill to aid them. The end dragged a bit for me, since this was the "romantic" conclusion, but the overall story was still pretty good. Rating: 4 stars
It should also be noted that the stories should be read in order as well! Some characters reappear in the later stories, which was a nice. Anyways, I will have to check out the sequel with how well Hell Cop went for me!

This book contains three stories/novellas that are all set in the same world. A place with demons. And cops who deal with them.
All three stories showed that these authors have excellent writing skills. All three had a real suspense plot/mystery that took precedence over the romance.
I usually don't like novellas that much because there isn't enough room to give the characters flesh and to develop a intricate plot line. I still think I would have prefered each story as a full book but I have to admit that each author managed to make the ultimate use of the limited frame a novella can offer.
Also all the audio versions are really good.
I'm looking forward to the next book in the series.

"Next of Kin" by Astrid Amara
I enjoyed this story, although it didn't blow me away like, say, her story in Irregulars. The legal system and rights of demons didn't make a ton of sense, but that's probably realistic, sadly.
The narrator was very clear and easy to understand, but sounded as if he were bored, which decreased the interest of the exciting scenes. 3.5 stars

Literal boy-next-door James has had a crush on his former neighbor since he was a kid, and now that he's a photojournalist he has the opportunity to impress him by collecting evidence of a major criminal enterprise. But will either of them survive the investigation? 3.5 stars

I can't say enough in praise of the way this anthology has been put together: instead of throwing together a collection of tales loosely or barely connected by a theme, the three authors have closely collaborated on a detailed paranormal world, with characters and plot points that cross over into the other stories. I found this a much better reading experience, enabling me to engage far more fully with the world, with the added interest of seeing how three talented but distinct authors approached the material.
As to this specific collection, it's a great set up: the paranormal elements are very detailed and interesting, especially the role of sorcery and corporations. The "hell cop" focus enables the authors to balance the familiar (and mostly reliable) law-n-order plot structure with clever and original developments involving such things as demons and illegal magical substances. I probably liked Ginn Hale's story the best, but I thought all three were solid.
On the downside, though all three of these authors are terrific fantasy writers--(and I'd go so far as to call Ginn Hale one of the major writers in the genre)--none of them are my first choices when I'm looking for hot sex. The romances here were satisfying, but the sex scenes and general relationship dynamics were not especially memorable or original.
Bottom line: I really like the way this collection was structured, and it made for a far better reading experience than the usual anthology. I hope more authors/publishers follow their example.

I am already in love with this world. What wonderful characters and ideas. I loved Jay, such a heart breaker to know he was denied all touch for so long. Brian was wonderful, so innocent but still brave enough to go after what he wants. Watching them together was everything I could of hoped for. I even read the sex scenes with relish as they were completely naturally done.

Of this three story anthology, I liked the first one best. Fire and water, a man who can't be touched even by his mother for the fact that every contact with his skin burns other beings' flesh with his untameable energy, and a man who can absorb and transform energy. Destined for each other, and still making an active decision about wanting to be together.
Second - a half-demon and a sorcerer - a good pairing, but a rather weak mystery. Liked it least.
Third - a brave, strong-willed young human and a sorcerer cop who's a bit dense when it comes to realize what goodness is right before his eyes. Also very good, if the fight was a little messy

I love anthologies. This one has three stories all taking place in Parmas City. You get a great world and no info dumping. You simple get more information about various parts of life along the way. I loved how it is done. The blurb for this book is great, so I won't repeat what the stories are about.
All three have great characters and none of the three pairs seem forced. Rushed maybe, but not forced.

I thoroughly enjoyed all three stories. I don't know if I have a favorite because they were all page turners. I love this world and any of these shorts would have made a great novel. Looking forward to reading the next anthology Hell Cop 2

This was an interesting anthology. I've never read anything with this kind of 'world' so it was a little different for me. It took me a bit to understand the portals and what not. I'm not sure I fully understood it by the last story, but the stories weren't bad.
I preferred the first story, Next of Kin, best out of all three. But overall, they were all good.

Probably it's the first time I'll try to write a "serious" review without my usual images and smiles (just one, here -->
), because the fantastic quality and the 3 stories of this anthology deserve my effort. I must write telling you everything that pass in my mind. So sorry, in advance, for all my grammar mistakes.
All 3 stories background is the same. In a world where humans and demons try to live in harmony, a special human force, of powerful sorcerers and warlocks, is needed. They are called Hell Cops. Because even if this harmony exist, it's just apparent. Humans use demons (or their body parts) in their technological advances, so a sort of abuse could happen, and there must be a cop force to avoid it.
I would define this anthology as Cyberpunk, not fantasy or just sci-fi. So for this rare fact, right quality M/M and cyberpunk, I would already recommend this book (with only the warning about also the erotic content of all stories).
Each story is about one hell cop, and his case, so site down. Be comfy, and allow me to say few words about them.
First story: Next Of Kin, by Astrid Amara
I have no idea if it's fair to say which of the 3 stories is my favorite, but if I could pick the best one I would say it's this one.
Jay is a Hell Cop with a very powerful force. He can burn demons, with only a light touch... he is considered one of (if not the) best and stronger Hell Cop... but as you can imagine,m this deadly touch is not restrict to demons. Jay can't have any skin to skin contact, humans or demons, no one can touch or be near him.
Yes, it's the perfect tortured soul, because how can someone life with such burden?
In a horrible case of children murder, he must not only find who is the human invoking demons to do such horrendous crime, but also avoid at all cost a newbie of the city... the innocent Brian, a human that by a coincidence will be involved in Jay's case. You will see both POV, but certainly Jay's is in the spotlight.
Everything in this story (in my modest opinion) is perfect. The writing, the introduction of all the scientific innovations of this strange world, the characters, the suspense, the drama, the romance, I repeat everything is perfect.
Brutal honesty? I could give 5 stars to this review just for this story, because it's quality. It is superb, and certainly I would recommend it to all readers, not only sci-fi or fantasy readers.
Second story: Red Sands, by Nicole Kimberling
This sweet story is all written in just one POV, the University professor, and half demon, Michael.
After an trip for scientific reasons, Michal during a portal travel will be accused of murder. He can't hide his half demon origin, because his physical aspect is not completely human.
Racism can drive the hell cops, to accuse someone, just because of his origin? Maybe Michael would be the victim of hate, but one of the two Hell Cops involved is Detective Argent... and both men met before... I can tell more, or will spoil the mystery.
Again, it's a perfect story? Yes, it's a very good part of the anthology, but in my view there is this little (and the only) problem: the rushed end. I know it's a short story inside an anthology, and certainly the authors were obligated to follow a maximum of word count. Probably that's what made the suspense end with such abrupt conclusion.
But, it's not something that ruined this story. I just had this impression, of an anticlimactic resolution of the two mysteries (who is the killer and where is Michael father), but again, as the first, i would give 5 stars.
Third story: Touching Sparks, by Ginn Hale
This writer is the only one I already knew (Wicked Gentlemen) so I was very excited to read more of her work.
I wasn't disappointed... at all.
Moran, the tormented and lonely Hell Cop, using the "innocent" and young James as informant in a very dangerous case.... such great couple! I had some problems to deal with the (IMO) excessive dramatic POV of Moran, but well, he really had a very traumatic lost.
Both men POV gave me a very complete view of the case, and I really appreciate this story.
It's the best of the anthology? Hum.... brutal truth, I think the first story is the best, but this one was very close to be perfect.
Anyway, again it's a 5 stars...
so... my conclusion is:

He can burn demons, with only a light touch... he is considered one of (if not the) best and stronger Hell Cop... but as you can imagine,m this deadly touch is not restrict to demons. Jay can't have any skin to skin contact, humans or demons, no one can touch or be near him.
Yes, it's the perfect tortured soul, because how can someone life with such burden?
In a horrible case of children murder, he must not only find who is the human invoking demons to do such horrendous crime, but also avoid at all cost a newbie of the city... the innocent Brian, a human that by a coincidence will be involved in Jay's case. You will see both POV, but certainly Jay's is in the spotlight.
Everything in this story (in my modest opinion) is perfect. The writing, the introduction of all the scientific innovations of this strange world, the characters, the suspense, the drama, the romance, I repeat everything is perfect.
Brutal honesty? I could give 5 stars to this review just for this story, because it's quality. It is superb, and certainly I would recommend it to all readers, not only sci-fi or fantasy readers.
Second story: Red Sands, by Nicole Kimberling
This sweet story is all written in just one POV, the University professor, and half demon, Michael.
After an trip for scientific reasons, Michal during a portal travel will be accused of murder. He can't hide his half demon origin, because his physical aspect is not completely human.
Racism can drive the hell cops, to accuse someone, just because of his origin? Maybe Michael would be the victim of hate, but one of the two Hell Cops involved is Detective Argent... and both men met before... I can tell more, or will spoil the mystery.
Again, it's a perfect story? Yes, it's a very good part of the anthology, but in my view there is this little (and the only) problem: the rushed end. I know it's a short story inside an anthology, and certainly the authors were obligated to follow a maximum of word count. Probably that's what made the suspense end with such abrupt conclusion.
But, it's not something that ruined this story. I just had this impression, of an anticlimactic resolution of the two mysteries (who is the killer and where is Michael father), but again, as the first, i would give 5 stars.
Third story: Touching Sparks, by Ginn Hale
This writer is the only one I already knew (Wicked Gentlemen) so I was very excited to read more of her work.
I wasn't disappointed... at all.
Moran, the tormented and lonely Hell Cop, using the "innocent" and young James as informant in a very dangerous case.... such great couple! I had some problems to deal with the (IMO) excessive dramatic POV of Moran, but well, he really had a very traumatic lost.
Both men POV gave me a very complete view of the case, and I really appreciate this story.
It's the best of the anthology? Hum.... brutal truth, I think the first story is the best, but this one was very close to be perfect.
Anyway, again it's a 5 stars...
so... my conclusion is:
Individually, or judging by the anthology whole, certainly it will get my 5 stars
I'm already starting the second part of this anthology. Always the same characters, but now with a possible different end... because in this anthology the HEA is foreseeable, while in the second no. Will the couples be still together, as a true Happily Ever After? It's a good question, and you must read both anthologies to know the answer.... so I'll certainly keep reading it.
