The titular story is centered on the idea of doppelganger, during the post-WWII era, in a rich family of a remote village, the heir of the family has always been haunted by the sighting of doppelgangers, it's rumored that once the family's heir saw their own doppelgangers, they will soon die.

Another short story is about a man being killed in a garden, but there was no footprint on the snow expects the victim's own footprints, what is going on? Will the young detective manage to solve this mysterious death?

There is also another story about the supposedly 'hopping demon in the wood' that kidnapped children, making them disappeared; plus the short story about a mysterious 'living Buddha' and how the create them. Interesting.

To sum up, it's a pretty solid and entertaining short stories collection, with a lot of interesting ideas about Japanese traditional demon folklore and clever mysteries; but if you were familiar with the author's other novels, you may find some of the plot twists a bit predicable.

沒有如魔偶那本那麼讓我驚喜，可能是因為期待值被那本拉高了。最喜歡跟書名一樣的第四篇，第三篇如屍蠟也不錯。然後我忽然間發現，每一篇的兇手竟然都是男性。
