Dinner with kids shouldn't be a battleground. And it shouldn't make a martyr out of the parent whose job it is to get it on the table fast, fresh and hot every day at 6 PM. Aviva Goldfarb's cheerful Scramble system takes the hassle and worry out of mealtime. Her users and readers rely on her grocery lists, weekly meal plans and recipes not just for the healthy dinners themselves but for taking the stress out of dinnertime. She wants families to actually enjoy their dinners together! Now, with SOS! The Six O'Clock Scramble to the Rescue , Goldfarb is taking an extra of-the-moment stress away from meal planning for busy concern about the environment, about the cost of shipping out-of-season food halfway around the world, about packaging, about additives and preservatives.
In SOS! The Six O'Clock Scramble to the Rescue , readers will get a full year of weekly meals
--help readers eat seasonally without missing their favorite foods --move toward a slightly more vegetarian menu for health and a lighter environmental footprint --reveal when organic matters (and when it doesn't) --save money through easy, efficient planning, bulk buying, freezing and storing, and avoiding waste --pack the power of achievable ethnic meals, such as Easy Cheesy Tex Mex Scramble and Greek Pasta Salad --make grocery trips count
Aviva Goldfarb is founder and CEO of The Six O'Clock Scramble, an online healthy meal planner.
She is a Today Show and Washington Post contributor, author of 3 Six O’Clock Scramble cookbooks, including The Six O’Clock Scramble Meal Planner: A Year of Quick, Delicious Meals to Help You Prevent and Manage Diabetes (American Diabetes Association, February, 2016).
Aviva treasures dinner time with her family but was fed up with the stress of having so little time to decide what to make and cook healthy meals that everyone would like. So she created an online family dinner planner for busy parents like her that takes the Scramble out of 6:00 with a weekly dinner plan and grocery list delivered right to their email inbox or phone.
I have been a customer of cookbook author Aviva Goldfarb for years -- she has a service called The Scramble which provides weekly recipes. The reason I've been getting these recipes for years is because they are just really, really good. So when I found out Goldfarb had a new cookbook out: SOS! The Six O'Clock Scramble to the Rescue, it really didn't matter to me that the subtitle was "Earth-Friendly, Kid-Pleasing Dinners for Busy Families." My family, though busy, consists of just me and the hubby, and the only kid involved (my stepson) is already 25 years old. It doesn't matter to me: This is one fantastic cookbook.
I'll tell you what I've already made. Ginger-Soy Flank Steak. This is a terrific marinade to know how to whip up. Curried Chicken Salad with Grapes. This is just so good you won't believe it. Yesterday in NYC we had 92-degree weather and I honestly was just talking to the hubby about that recipe, which I started making last summer. It's in the cookbook. The Hearty Beef Stew for winter is incredible. I even made it a few winters ago for a friend right out of the hospital, leaving him a few containers, and perhaps it may have even contributed to a speedy recovery! :) It's that good. The Huevos Rancheros are a delight -- I make mine with as many low-fat ingredients as I can find. Lastly, you will want the book just for the empanada recipe. The recipe even tells you how to make them with regular pie crust if your supermarket isn't savvy enough to carry the Goya empanada shells. So there's no excuse for you not to have empanadas, ever!
If I sound like a fan, that's because I am. Squeee! Recipes in this book that caught my eye that I can't wait to make are Tandoori Chicken; Mumbai Meatballs; Rosemary Pork Chops in Yogurt-Feta Sauce; and just the adorable-sounding Mini Meatloaf Muffins.
By the way, the cookbook has many helpful articles such as how to stock a pantry; healthier Halloween snacks; and tips on freezing meals. These are all helpful but my personal recommendation is to buy it for the recipes and use it for the recipes. A wonderful resource!
As some of you may know, I am a faithful follower and subscriber of the Six O'Clock Scramble recipe service. It's meal planning in a weekly email that provides simple, delicious recipes and shopping lists for those busy, crazy family weeknights (or whenever). The Scramble has helped me put dinner on the table every night at 6:30 for the last 4 years! And over these years, I have become (virtual) friends with the founder/author, Aviva Goldfarb. For this past year, I have been an official recipe tester for the Scramble--a job I take very seriously!
When Aviva's new cookbook came out, I ran out to get a copy and officially meet Aviva in person. You can imagine my surprise when she told me that my name is in the Acknowledgments and I am also mentioned in one of the recipes I tested! What an honor!!
Anyway, I do love cooking and this cookbook makes cooking NOT a chore, but a way to wind down after a busy day at work. Luckily, I don't have picky eaters in my family, which helps! I love all the eco-friendly tips throughout the book as well--Aviva is not an extremist. She gives realistic easy tips on how to feed your family healthy food and work towards saving the environment, at the same time.
Let's face it--dinner is a challenge. This is one way to make it fun and easy. Personally, I can't live without the Scramble and I highly recommend this cookbook!
If ever there were a perfect cookbook for me, this is it. The recipes are not only fast and simple, they're seasonal and local as well! (And no weird foods or ingredients.) I checked this one out from the library, but I'm either going to have to buy it or join her online menu planner to get her weekly menu plan and customized grocery list.
Great recipes and quick which is exactly what I need at the end of a long day. I haven't tried all of them but the ones I have are excellent and healthy!
solid, basic recipes. lots of meat, but not in a bad way. organized by seasons and interspersed with helpful tips, anecdotes, and ideas. a great book for someone who is interested in ways for their family to eat healthier without sacrificing cost, flavor, or too much extra time.
Not too many really new recipes to me, but there were a few good ones I plan on trying. Not everything is vegetarian but some good options and some interesting sounding recipes (eggplant w mint and chickpeas, gnocchi w greens).
