New young adult, sci-fi/fantasy author, Kirstin van Dyke was inspired at age 15 to begin writing "Code Name: Silence". She has always had a fascination with superheroes, superpowers, and has had a lifelong obsession with fantasy and the unknown. It took her three years and nearly ten rewrites before "Code Name: Silence" became the adventure that it is now.
Born and raised in Portland, Oregon, Kirstin showed an interest in art and writing at a very early age. She started to put together "picture books" when she was four years old, and wrote her first story when she was six. When she was in third grade, one of her illustrated books won third place in OPB's "Reading Rainbow Young Writers and Illustrators Contest." Ever since, Kirstin dedicated herself to expanding her writing skills into a career. She taught herself art and writing with various textbooks and then took formal art training and writing classes for three years. She wrote "Code Name: Silence" during that time.
While "Code Name: Silence" is Kirstin's first book to go to print, she has written another novel prior to it when she was 12, entitled "The Ghost Wolf." Other novels written after "Code Name: Silence" include "Amethyst," and the sequel to "Code Name: Silence" - "Team: Silence" - which is scheduled for release in 2010. Eventually, Kirstin hopes to publish "The Ghost Wolf" and "Amethyst" as well.
Now, 19 and having just completed her first year at college, Kirstin lives in Oregon with her family, where she continues to write novels, poems, and short stories. In her free time, she likes to paint, draw, play with her two Shetland Sheepdogs, and go trail riding on her horse Romeo. Never lacking for ideas and inspiration, Kirstin's dream is to keep creating stories, and put her imagination in writing for other people to enjoy.
This book was an enjoyable read though at times the events that happened seemed too coincidental. The story was told in a very choppy style where nothing really seemed to flow. It seemed as if the characters just left and all of a sudden they had enough trust to give away their biggest secrets. Everything in this book just seemed to pop out of nowhere so the pieces just didn't fit together very smoothly. The story line was very entertaining however and it keeps you wanting to know more. I think this book would have been great if it was a little longer so the story line could move in a much smoother manner and allowed time for the characters to create more of a bound. As the story is now it just seems like friendship pops out of nowhere, bad guys can tell future, and everything that is needed to happen just comes out of nothingness.
This was a fun book! Teens with super powers cross paths with the mysterious 'Silence'. Interesting and fun concept... I thought that this was a great read and I found myself drawn to Kathy, Aaron, Robert, and Linda. Disappointments if there were any include more backgound on the teens, like how they found about their powers and each other. Starting this book I felt like I had just picked up a comic book in the middle of a big story arc. Beyond that I still will keep this book on my 'to keep' bookcase and will look foward to more adventures. Good job Kirstin!
This is a great start to a fantastic book series! This book is about a bunch of kids that have special powers and want to be superheros and help fight against crime. It is a great book and anyone who likes adventure and alot of action should definetly read this book!
I have some mixed feelings about this book. CODE NAME: SILENCE is the story of four friends with super powers who help catch a criminal. I really enjoyed the plot idea, and there was some great action scenes. I think younger teens will really like this book, and get quite involved with it. That being said, I think there were a few things that could have been worked out a little differently.
Firstly was the lack of explanation for the powers Kathy and her friends have (especially Linda’s). Now, I know there is a sequel planned, so maybe the explanation will come in time, so it’s not too big of a deal. Also, the use of code names in the book was a little confusing – I had a hard time remembering who everyone was in the beginning, though the more I read the easier it was to clue in that Kathy was Hidden Hawk, Aaron was Vision, etc. I just found the jump between their names and their code names awkward at times. There’s also a small romantic element near the end of the novel that I don’t think was necessary – the story was working well without it. I like the idea of four friends just hanging out and fighting bad guys!
I think teens will connect with Kathy, Linda, Aaron and Robert, normal kids with extraordinary abilities. Especially Kathy, who uses her powers to get out of being late to school (doesn’t every high schooler wish they had that ability? I know I did!). The writing is engaging, and the story moves at a nice fast pace, with lots of fun action. Teenagers kicking butt – always a good time. It’ll be interesting to see where the sequel takes the storyline!
Teens with super powers cross paths with the mysterious silence.Disappointed that there wasn,t more background on the teens like how they found each other or how they found out what there powers were and how to use them. When i started reading this book it felt like i was in the middle of a comic book series and i had missed the first few books other than that it was a fun read.
