The New Knitting Stitch Library promises to be "for the beginner and accomplished knitter alike", and that is absolutely true in my opinion. Especially the knit and purl stitch section is very simple, and yet the patterns are absolutely lovely. Even the more "accomplished" knitter like me sometimes forgets how beautiful surface structures can be created just by knit and purl stitches.
The charts are simple and very easy to follow, which is crucial when doing a difficult pattern with lots of different kinds of stitches. Naturally I haven't tried them all, but the ones I have tried have been simple and I haven't noticed any errors in the charts. The chart symbols and all that knitting code language are explained pretty well in the beginning of the book and even the simplest stitches, terms and practices are explained. That is important for the beginner who picks up the book.
Over the years The New Knitting Stitch Library has become my favorite - I start browsing for cute patterns every time I'm doing a project that allows some pattern work of my own. Sometimes I have wished it had more variety in the cable/lace/bobble stitch department, but then again, I can always improve and refine the patterns to suit my own tastes and needs. An excellent library of knitting patterns that I've consulted more times than I could count.
I also knit a dozen or so of these stitch patterns during a striped baby blanket project. The patterns turned out well, but I mostly chose ones from the knit/purl and cables sections (so maybe the lace and twisted stitch sections aren't as good?) Overall I really liked the clear, color photos printed on glossy paper and the nice knitting charts that accompany every pattern.
i tried about 12 different knit patterns from this book and not one of them looked as good as their pictures. maybe it's just me... or maybe this book is just wack.
