I grew up in Queens, NY in the 1950s with my “baby” sister, Lois. She is now a wonderful writer of young adult novels and nonfiction. My mother was born in Vienna, Austria, and my father came from Brooklyn – an interesting match! My best friends were Neil, Robbie, Krebs, and Paul. I’m still good friends with most of these guys. It was less hectic in those days – no computers, no emails, fewer TV channels (MANY fewer!) We had lots of fun playing ball and listening to records. I’ll never forget when the Beatles came to America – Beatlemania! After graduating from Baruch College in NYC, I didn’t know what to do with my life. I bounced around doing odd jobs, including taxi driver, dishwasher, and hotel desk clerk. One day, while relaxing in Central Park (OK, I was unemployed), I saw a group of children from a local daycare center. It struck me that I always liked children -- perhaps I could make a career out of something I liked. Eureka! Ever since then, I’ve been involved, in one way or another, with the lives of young children.
I received my Masters in Education from Bank Street College and taught preschool kids for a bunch of years. I loved the childrens' innocence and vivid imaginations. After moving into school administration for a few years, I began working at Scholastic, where I have been ever since.
At Scholastic, I was fortunate to be given the opportunity to write children’s books. The first book that I wrote was "The Dinofours: I’m Super Dino!" Twenty-seven other Dinofours’ books followed. I hope my respect and appreciation for young children shines through in my stories.
Nowadays, I’m lucky to be married to my beautiful and talented wife, Nancy (she’s also a writer). In 1998, we were blessed with a terrific daughter, Julia, who helps criticize my story ideas and lets me play with her once in a while.
And furthermore…any recollections of my life would not be complete without mentioning my grandmother, Mutti. She was an ever present source of love, appreciation, and wisdom.
The child's book "Five Little Penguins Slipping On The Ice" was a fun story to read that had a good moral of when there is danger, there was also risk involved. A possible punishment is being quarantined to the house by the doctor. The penguins realized pretty fast that outside can be dangerous if they didn't be careful. All of the brothers and sisters watched each other get hurt which forced them to be stuck at home. That didn't stop them from exploring and going on adventures.
This story didn't include very many characters. There are only five young penguins and two adults penguins. One adult penguin was the mother of the kids and she was the one who keeps calling the doctor every time a kid gets injured. The other adult penguin was the doctor who instructs the mother to keep the kids at home after they get hurt. Doctor stops the fun for the kids, but it's for the best.
The setting of the story is mainly outside where the kids play. It was always snowy outside whether their on the ice or on land. Another place that was a key part in the story was the living room where all the injured kids accumulate, while they listened to their mom call the doctor and hear the sad news. This book took place strictly during the daytime hours, no night scenes occurred because kids shouldn't be outside playing at night which is a good moral.
The overall theme of the book was that if you play outside and not be careful there can be consequences. These consequences are very irritating and usually annoying, because you had the power to be careful and didn't take enough safety precautions.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone of all ages for the simple fact that it was fun to read and has a good moral. This book has an ironic recurring action of the children penguins discovering the dangerous of the hazardous outdoors.
I read this book to my three year old cousin, and he loved it. He wished he could do all the fun stuff that the penguins had fun doing. He thought the doctor was mean for telling the penguins they couldn't go outside and play anymore.
I thought this book was very cute. It reminded me of the book about the five monkeys jumping on the bed that I read when I was younger. I feel as if it should have given the little penguins names instead of just calling them penguins. Also, I thought it was weird that the mom didn't listen to the doctor and still let the other penguins play after one got hurt. I feel as if this book could teach some kids bad habits, especially kids that are little trouble makers. Other than the kids still playing and hurting themselves the book was a cute little kid's book.
The five little penguins, who didn't have names, were trouble makers and always getting into mischief. I feel as if they were little naughty penguins that didn't listen to any type of rules. The penguins mother seem to be a push over, she doesn't listen to what the doctor says. She doesn't discipline the other penguins at all, so they don’t go out and hurt themselves. The doctor seem to be very smart and knows what he's talking about. He knows when the kids shouldn't play. So they don't hurt themselves anymore, than they already did.
The setting of this book is the outdoors during the winter months where all the penguins play. For example on a sledding hill and/or an ice rink.
I would recommend this book to any younger kids ages two to six years old. The book doesn't have context that is hard to understand and it's very interesting. There is also a lot of colorful pictures to keep the kids interested.
“Five Little Penguins Slipping on the Ice” is a really good children’s book. This book reminded me of the book “Five Little Monkeys jumping on the bed”. “Five Little Penguins Slipping on the Ice” is written by Steve Metzger and illustrated by Laura Bryant. I think that Laura Bryant did an excellent job on the pictures.
This book is about five brother and sister penguins. They are outside having fun on the ice when one falls down after slipping on the ice. The mother then calls the doctor and the doctor tells her to not have her penguins slip on the ice. The story continues with more of the penguins slipping on the ice.
The characters in this story are the five penguins, their mother, and the doctor. There really is no main character in the story. The penguins do not like to listen to the doctor or their mother.
The setting of the story is in the winter when there is ice. The story doesn’t say the specific time frame. The little penguins are slipping on the ice near the house. The mother is in the house.
The theme of this book is to listen to your doctor. If you get hurt once or someone you know that does don’t keep doing that or you will get hurt. The penguins should have stopped playing on the ice and found something else fun to do that wouldn’t involve the penguins getting hurt.
I would recommend this book to parents that have younger children because this book has a good story and theme to it. Also because the pictures are very eye catching.
Ri's favourite part was when the penguins were slipping on the ice. This kid got an eye for details!
Fun to sing along to the tune of that nursery rhyme about monkeys jumping on the bed, at least Ri enjoyed singing bits of the song. Penguins, it turns out, are about as careless as monkeys and those five get hurt all the time. Stay away from the ice, kiddos!
Personal- I read the book Five Little Penguins Slipping on the Ice. The book was easy to read. Thus, the book was an easy read and had a lot of detail about the five little penguins. I read this book to my nephew Hunter and he loved it. He is three and likes animal books. The five penguins hurt themselves all the time.
Plot- This book is about five young penguins that can not seem to slow down. One by one, these little penguins keep hurting themselves. Every time a little penguin gets hurt, the mother calls the doctor. The doctor keeps telling the mother to stop the penguins from doing what they are doing so they don't get hurt. Eventually they run out of stuff to do, so the mother calls the doctor and he tells them to go play.
Characterization- The characters in this book include the five young penguins, the mother, and the doctor. The five penguins are always out playing but hurting themselves. The mother is the one that gets worried so she calls the doctor. The doctor tells them to not play too hard.
Setting- This children's book is set in modern times, mostly in the woods and on the ice. Occasionally the setting moves to the house when the mother has to call the doctor. The penguins play on the frozen ice.
Thematic- Sometimes you can get hurt and get angry, or you can get back up and try to make the most out of the situation. The penguins learned how to help each other and stay positive even though they were slipping and falling down.
Recommendation- I recommend this book to anyone that is three years old or older. The book is very easy to read and follow. Both girls and boys would enjoy it. I give the book a three star rating because my nephew was giggling about the penguins falling.
"Five Little Penguins Slipping on the Ice" is about five little penguins. These five little penguins are always having fun but one by one they just keep getting hurt. The mother keeps on calling the doctor but the doctor keeps saying no more this no more that. Pretty soon they have nothing to do because the doctor said they can't do anything.
The characters in this book are the five penguins, the mother, and the doctor. The five little penguins are always playing and having fun and one by one they get hurt and can no longer have fun. The mother penguin calls the doctor whenever one of the little penguins get hurt. The doctor is the one who ruins all the fun telling them they can’t have any fun but in the end he turns it around and tells them to have some fun.
The picture book takes place in modern time and the main place in the story is outside in the snow and on the ice. They also are in the house a lot when they get hurt. Whenever the penguins are playing, one of them slips on the ice and gets hurt.
In this book the penguins get hurt and they just stop having fun because the doctor said so. In life you’re going to fall down and get hurt. You can’t stay down and give up. You have to get up and keep doing what you love to do and keep doing what makes you happy.
I would recommend this book to everyone ages one and up. It is super easy to read and it’s got a good flow to it.

I liked "Five Little Penguins Slipping on the Ice" by Steve Metzger because the rhyming sentences kept me wanting to read. The series of events that happen to the five little penguins is entertaining and interesting. The group of five penguins slowly decreases to one penguin as the story goes on. The penguins do not have names. I suspect that they are all sibling penguins though, because they have the same mother. As one penguin gets hurt in each activity, the mother penguin calls the doctor for suggestions on what to do. The doctor always says to not do the activity that the incident occurred in. The time takes place in winter. The activities the penguins take part in are activities that only take place in winter. Some activities the penguins do are sledding, ice skating, and jumping on the ice. I'm assuming the activities take place around the penguins' home. The theme of this book is to be careful in activities. Each penguin got in an accident, and the mother penguin had to deal with each situation. I would recommend this book to young children. The colorful pictures and rhyming sentences would catch the young child's attention and keep them interested in the book.

This children’s book takes place in modern time mostly out in the woods on the ice. Occasionally the book takes place in the house when the mother calls the doctor.
I would recommend this book to anyone ages one and up. This book has a very mild vocabulary and a very flowing storyline. I would give this book an overall rating of three out of five stars.
I read the book “Five Little Penguins Slipping on the Ice.” It was a good book about five little penguins that like to have fun. They each have some bad luck and one after another they got hurt and the doctor says that they can’t do that anymore. After they are all hurt though the doctor says that they need to go and have some fun, so all the penguins go and play outside.
There weren’t too many things about the main characters. There are five young penguins. They each have a bit of bad luck. Then there’s their mother. Lastly there’s the doctor. He tells the mother that they can’t do their fun activities.
This book takes place in the Winter seasons of the year. Besides that the time and place are not talked about, but I would assume that it takes place on Antarctica because that’s where penguins live.
It was a good book about how young kids act, and also has a good message that even though kids play hard and get hurt that you can’t keep them from having fun. I would recommend this book to elementary schoolers and parents looking for a good book to read to their young kids.
“Five Little Penguins Slipping on the Ice” was a cute little story. Picture books are my favorite. It was really sad when the first little penguin fell down while slipping on the ice then, the second one fell into the icy sea while sliding near a tree. The third penguin flew up then fell down while skating all around and the forth banged her bill playing on a hill. The fifth one should have just stayed home because he was bound to get hurt and he did. He broke the ice and began to cry after jumping very high. Their mother ended up calling the doctor after every time a penguin got hurt and he told them no more doing what they were doing. Even though every penguin got hurt it was very cute. I believe that any age shoud read books like this and I recommend it to all ages because anyone can use a smile.
I just read “Five little Penguins Slipping on the Ice” by Steve Metzger. It is a great children's book that shows kids to be careful while playing.
There are five little penguins in the book and each one hurts itself some how. The recurring theme of the book is the mother calls the doctor and the doctor says no more penguins (insert verb here_______) on the (insert a noun here_______). Throughout the whole book this mother lets her baby penguins go play in dangerous places! They then get hurt and have to go to the doctor. I think this doctor needs to turn the mother into child services pretty quick!
The setting of the story takes place outside in winter as the penguins play outside.
I would recommend this book to any parent looking for a good book to read to their young kids at night. I think it would be helpful because it shows kids to be careful while playing.
"Five Little Penguins Slipping on the Ice" was a good picture book that showed two important aspects of life. The kids can get hurt playing and the penguins had to learn from their friends getting hurt. They should have stopped playing on the ice but they did not. All of the penguins got hurt and eventually were all kept inside. They were not having any fun and they were stuck inside. Their mom got a phone call and it changed their attitudes.
I would recommend this book to any child looking for a good book that is easy and fun to read. Anyone could read this book for a good laugh, but I would recommend it to mothers and children.
"Five Little Penguins Slipping On the Ice" is a book about five little penguins who go outside and play on the ice. All of the little penguins get hurt while playing on the ice. The mother calls the doctor, and the doctor says the little penguins can no longer play on the ice. A little while later the doctor calls back and the doctor says that the penguins can go back out on the ice and play. I think this was a good book that is recommended for little children.
This was a very quick and easy book to read. I found it very funny and cute. It had a rhyme scheme throughout the entire story, which was fun to read. I would recommend this book for all ages. Kids and adults can enjoy this fun story about five baby penguins keep finding ways to get themselves into trouble.
Great rhyming and rhythm! If you're familiar with "Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed", you will enjoy reading this. Since there's counting involved, it helps children learn their numbers. There's rhyming in the story, as well as rhythm and it's easy to follow along.
This book is a good teaching resource and could aid in teaching students to comprehend and listen during a repetitive story that is kind of relatable to the book, "Five Little Monkeys Jumping On The Bed." The five little penguins is a cute story and is repetitive enough that the young readers could catch on quickly and might even begin to repeat the story back t0 you. This would be a good read aloud during winter!
"FIve Little Monkeys Slipping on the Ice," by Steve Metzger is a cute book with a twist on "The Five Littel Monkeys." It has the same sing song like words that make the book flow and want to laugh as you read. This book uses very simple words that would be great for beginning readers.
Delightful take on the classic 10 Little Monkeys Jumping on the bed. Great use of snap words and winter vocabulary. My 2. grade granddaughter enjoyed the surprise ending. The doc changed his advice to momma. Nice illustrations. Just the correct length to read while waiting in the morning school drop off line. Purchased used at Children's Consignment Shop.
Little penguins go out to enjoy winter, but get hurt one by one. Mama calls the doctor and the doctor tells them to stop. Each penguins activity is different. In the end, after there are zero penguins outside, the doctor tells mama that they should all go out and have fun.
This story is obviously a penguin take on Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed. The text doesn't rhyme, but the illustrations are fantastic. In a pinch I might use it for storytime, but only if I couldn't find anything I liked better.
I used this picture book for Sunday's story time. I used it in place of the finger play. I had the kids put up 5 fingers and remove one each time they were sent to bed. Kids enjoyed the book.
So, this book is five little monkeys, just slipping and different things. And the last one says "let the penguins have some fun." So, that's my whole review.
