Faith of the Heart

Rate this book
Investigative reporter Joshua Miller has turned his back on life. Since cancer claimed his wife, he can't bring himself to write another story. Then he hears about a fascinating woman who piques his curiosity. After being struck by lightning, Sarah Reid finds herself with a gift... and a curse. She can heal the sick and dying. She soon realizes that along with the special gift also comes danger to her own life. Feeling responsible for the death of her best friend, Sarah reasons that perhaps she has received the gift to make amends, no matter the personal cost. Neither expects sparks to fly when they meet. Sarah discourages Josh's persistence in investigating her while he fights his attraction, refusing to acknowledge that she can truly save people. Can Sarah break through Josh's stubborn cynicism and show him that miracles really can come true by leading him back to love?

Faith of the Heart is book four in the Damaged Heroes series by Sandy James. This book has been re-released the end of June. This book was unique to me. I don’t think I’ve ever read about someone that can heal the sick. And I knew right from the start that Sarah Reid was the real deal.

lightening

Sarah led the usual life of a teenager, maybe a bit on the wild side. She and her best friend, Charlie, were constant companions. Until an accident took Charlie’s life and Sarah blamed herself. Not long after that, a freak bolt of lightening struck Sarah which left her with the ability to heal others. She could literally absorb the illness into herself and heal them. But then she would collapse for hours in a sort of deep sleep. She was healing people daily, the sickest of the sick would seek her out. She somehow felt this was her way of paying for the death of her friend, no matter the cost to her own health.

Joshua Miller was a journalist and had a thirteen year old daughter, Elizabeth. A little over a year ago, Josh lost the love of his life, his wife, to cancer. He hasn’t been able to let go of his grief and hasn’t written a word since her loss. But when Josh hears about a woman who supposedly can heal the sick and he is asked to do a story on her, he can’t resist the opportunity to reveal a fraud.

When Josh and Sarah first meet, Josh is surprised at the instant urge to protect this woman, even if she was a thief, praying on innocent people who are desperate. But the more time they spend together, Josh realizes that her gift is real. But more importantly, he witnesses the toll it is taking on her. If she continues on as she is, she won’t survive much longer. It’s up to him and his daughter to save Sarah from herself.

“Sarah had reached him when he’d thought he had nothing left inside him to reach.”

Josh and Sarah soon fall in love. For Sarah, it is her first real love, and for Josh, it is a renewal of life. Sarah didn’t heal him physically but she healed his heart. Now he just has to find a way to convince her to love herself as much as he loves her. That she doesn’t have to save everyone.

“Each time they touched, Sarah felt a rightness descend on her she’d never felt in her life. A feeling that was so strong, she could pretend that it was real and wouldn’t end soon. That she wouldn’t go back to her old life, to healing. That she would always be with Joshua.”

But Josh and Sarah’s happily ever after is not so easily won. A mistake causes Sarah to doubt every single thing Josh has said to her. Josh tries everything he can think of to find a way to convince her of his love but she’ll have none of it.

This was such a sweet story, of the healing power of love, of the power of the unknown. Why was Sarah chosen to have this gift? And a gift so easily given can also be easily taken away. Josh and Sarah both deserved happiness. Will they trust in themselves and each other to accept the love they each have to offer? I look forward to the last book in this series, Twist of Fate.

Lena’s Review

Joshua Miller doesn’t believe in magic or faith healers. Why should he when they failed him in the one person he had loved? Now years later he must do something he swore he would never do again. He has to believe in one, a healer. He only has his daughter now to help him cope in life. Yet when he meets Sarah Reid he is starting to feel something. Joshua knows it is all a hoax what she does. Each day with her though Josh sees something in Sarah that reminds him of good times when he was young falling in love for the first time. Sarah shows him a life that he never expected to see again and it hurts him. He knows that in some way it feels like cheating but he can’t help it. As a journalist he must always uncover the truth but Sarah is more than just finding the truth. Can he believe in her and love again?

Sarah Reid is a woman who has demons inside and regrets. Something happened years ago to give her a gift that no one understands. Only she knows what it entails and tries to stay normal. Yet her family uses her in a way that is killing her every day she uses her gift. It is a gift that people like Joshua Miller hate her for having. She doesn’t know exactly why he hates her but knows that somehow he is important to her in a way no man has been before. Each day with Joshua is making Sarah feel, for the first time, like a woman instead of a healer like everybody sees her. Just when she thinks things could be okay with him she finds out the truth about him. Can she ever forgive Joshua and make a life with him before her healing kills her?

Oh my god, I love Sandy James’ Damaged Heroes series for they have action, suspense, romance, passion and most of all, the chance of finding that everlasting love. I loved Sarah Reid for she was an unusual character in this book—nothing I have seen before. Here is a woman who has never known real love but pain, turmoil and regrets all her life. Now Joshua is a man who is perfect for her in every way from his compassion and his faith in still believing about love. These two were great and I loved Josh’s little girl for she is truly bright and smart in this whole book. This is one that will definitely stay in your heart like it has mine. Sandy did a beautiful job in making these characters memorable. Great job and keep up the talented work!

Faith of the Heart brings together Sarah Reid, a healer and Joshua Miller an investigative reporter in an unlikely but very romantic love story. It is highly emotional, deal with people who are chronically ill and loss of loved ones. Joshua's daughter Libby brings in an appreciation of how a child makes a family and how they can goof up sometimes and still be loved. I love a good romance with lots of emotions and conflict and Faith of the Heart delivers on both.

I purchased Faith of the Heart as part of an anthology.

I had a bit of trouble getting into this story to begin with. I hate to read or hear about people taking advantage of or using others. Makes me sick inside. It wasn't too long into it though and it started to turn around and the actual story came out. And what a story it was. I liked the twist and turns throughout. Wish we knew if gift came back after having baby though.
