Susan Woodford illuminates the greatness of classical art and architecture and conveys a sense of the excitement that fired the creative artists of the time. The Greeks were quick to challenge time-honoured styles and, stimulated by the problems that sometimes emerged from their daring innovations, they invented solutions that have been considered classics ever since. The Romans recognized the Greek achievement and built on it, adding a talent for organization and flair for architectural construction on a huge scale to create an impressive art of their own.

Для начинающих - самое оно, для продвинутых - можно пойти поискать что-то глубже, ну а мне полезно напомнило, что все-таки античное искусство не то, в которое я хочу копать глубже, ну не мое.
I have this book on my shelves for quite some time, since my mom gave it to me in my earlier Years on architecture school. Somehow, I totally forgot about it until earlier this year when I felt that I needed to rediscover the basis and the begining of architecture history. To a student it can be of some use, but it is a very incomplete book in regards to all the issues that the author starts to develop and never finishes. It gives no clues to the original fonts that she had acess to, nor it gives any in depth information about art and architectural developments in relation to historic background. In overall, very superficial, wouldn't recomend.
Normally I don't care too much for political correctness and whatnot, but I really feel like the word "slavery" should have come up at least once in the course of this book--perhaps, for example, during the discussion of the Parthenon, the Pantheon, the Coliseum, the Roman baths and aqueducts, etc.
A brief summary of arts between Ancient Greece and the Roman empire. So simple and clear, it is perfect to achieve a general overview of the antique styles, artists and masterpieces. Really good.
