New city, new chuckleheads in need of a lesson. The battles in New Orleans are all about power struggles elsewhere, and it’s time for Cali to discover the source. It’s time for her and Fyre to visit New Atlantis and find out what the fuss is all about. Both gangs in the Crescent City are fighting for control, with Cali and her friends in the middle. To do nothing is to risk those she cares about on a daily basis. One of those, Tanyith, has his own people to protect, as the people who broke him out of Trevilsom prison finally reveal themselves. Her parents left behind secrets she needs to understand, mysteries with no clear solution. The shadowy figures behind the Kraken attack might be involved, or might be just another bunch of people seeking to mess with her life for no apparent reason. Watch out, New Atlantis, Caliste Leblanc is on her way to New Atlantis to bring the fight to you. Assuming nothing crazy happens when she travels through the Bermuda Triangle on the way there. I’m TR Cameron, science fiction author. I’ve been an avid consumer of the genre since I was six, I think, when I broke the seal on my Dad’s copies of the Asimov Foundation books. It’s been all downhill since then.
I have a day job that I love most days, and writing is pretty much my only consistent hobby. When I find time that’s not already filled with my wife, my daughter, my writing, my work, or dodging the affections of our clowder of cats, you can find me playing video games (currently Dishonored 2 – I’m a little behind the times on this one), watching things (Marvel movies, American Gods, Agents of Shield, Justified, The Expanse, Gotham), playing board games, or, naturally, reading.
My favorite authors in Sci-Fi are David Weber, Jean Johnson, John Scalzi, CJ Cherryh, and the giants: Asimov, Pohl, Bear, Heinlein, etc. I read a lot in other genres too, and am a big fan of Matthew Woodring Stover, Michael Anderle, Jim Butcher, and I could go on and on and on. If I had to choose one favorite, though, it would be Stephen R. Donaldson, whose Thomas Covenant series was transformative for me.
Probably my pie-in-the-sky dream for my writing career is that someone would make a movie or television show of my books and I could be a part of the production. Sure, unlikely, but a clowder-dodger can dream, right? My more practical dream is that I can keep writing and both entertaining and connecting with my readers for years and years to come.

Well, this was a pretty average urban fantasy book. It has the usual blend of snarky dialogue, magic action and a story that tries to have too much shit going on at the same time.
It is about a week since I read it and I should really have written a review sooner since now I am struggling to remember the details. That is about how thirteen-on-a-dozen and non-memorable this book is. But then with Martha Carr sticking her fingers into it and Michael Anderle’s name occurring despite him probably not having written a single line that is not too surprising.
I probably would not have started this series today but in 2020 when I read the first one I had not yet become wise to the red flags, for me at least, when a whole bunch of authors appears in the same book and when Carr and Anderle happens to be among those names.
Still, I kind of like the main protagonist, her snarky “pet”, the story is not all bad and overall I give this book a pass… barely.
If you are going to include military details in a story get it right...bullets, even magical ones 😃, would NEVER go to a class VII facility, jeeps are in museums, and rolling stock (tanks, etc) are never in a warehouse. The whole Fort Polk military infiltration was just so incorrect it made it hard to focus on the story. Authentic details enhance a story, pulling you in and in a fantasy help mentally suspend disbelief. . .if they are accurate.
Cali, Tanyith, and Fyre end up in New Atlantis in this story.
Guess where New Atlantis is situated, folks? Lol
I must admit to being confused over NA, though, as I thought that it WAS new, and not centuries old, as explained in this book - but, then, I'm easily confused, I guess! Lol
I have to admit I'm feeling very sorry for Cali right now. She works two separate jobs - one in the Drunken Dragons Tavern, where she works for the Dwarf, Zeb, doing shifts as a waitress, and the other, she's cleaning the training studio of her Martial Arts instructor, in return for free lessons.
Cali also studies at Uni, trains at the Martial Arts studio and, now, is battling,, under the Rules of War, of New Atlantis, and QQ probably to the death, with two separate groups, belonging to the New Atlantis peoples!
When does she actually get a break from it all?
Even the strongest of warriors would buckle under the strain that this 19 year old is expected to cope with!
Yet, she still jokes and laughs with her friends?
Despite my complaints, I really HAVE thoroughly enjoyed this series, so far, but even MY disbelief is being strained a little by everything that Cali is being put through.
How on earth can I expect her to survive what she's being put through, when her own parents seem to have been killed so easily?
But, her discovery at her Family House, in New Atlantis, was exciting, though, so I'm really hoping that Cali is actually given a break, to be able to do what she can, to change things there!
As I want to know what happens next, to Cali, and to her friend, Tanyith, I'm going straight on to book five: 'Spell Street Swing', to find out!
I REALLY love the book titles, btw!
So, once I finish this next book, I'll catch you on the flip side, to let you know what I think of it!
Cali, Tanyith, and Fyre travel to New Atlantis to find out more about Cali’s parents. The fact that her aunt Emalia had no knowledge of what Cali’s family is seems preposterous. This is someone who was a part of her life and she didn’t know she was related to her? That tidbit from the earlier book was so dumb. I honestly don’t understand why it was even brought up. My mother had friends from before I was born and it was always a given that they would take care of me if something happened to her. “Family” doesn’t have to be blood. Emalia should have remained a friend who WAS family. Anyway back to this book. I brought that up because of how much we learned about Cali’s folks. I have a feeling most of us already guessed what she learned. We did get a new character, “Jenkins”, in the story. He’s fun. Tanyith’s problems are fixing to become worrisome. I truly dislike what is being done to his character. He is supposedly this all-knowing gangster and he keeps proving that he’s not. He was only gone for 13 months. The books act like it was years and years. These are creatures whose lifespans are longer that humans-not as much as elves, but still. Thirteen months should have been a blink of an eye. There also haven’t been any lingering effects of Tanyith’s prison stay. The time there was short, but it would have still been horrific. Finally we get to the detective. Maybe Tanyith feels he needs to do penance. Getting with Barton seems like a bad idea. She automatically assumed he was dirty and now she’s doing the same thing to Cali’s folks. In the first book she basically black-mailed Cali into helping her. She might need to take a good look in the mirror. She might see that she isn’t on the side of angels either.
I’m a fast reader, most of the time. I have been trying to read books with their errors in them and not slam on the brakes on each one. It’s amazing to me how often an author will be writing something that I think about or that I might say. Cali and Tay say things that I would say in whatever situation they are in. Fyre has to be my favorite character because he reminds me of my cat. Of course he didn’t speak but just looking at him you know what he was thinking. Fyre at least has the ability to talk when he needs to. It’s just so sad that some of the things we wish could happen don’t. Like hearing our pets or baby’s thoughts. Great now I’m going to be watching some movies instead of reading.
Keep up the great work guys. You have a winner here.
The story moves and it entertains so 5 stars from me. At some point Cali and Tay exchange sincere "I love you"s but I am once again at a loss for when these strong emotions developed. Shared danger doesn't seem enough so are we to assume the friendship is developing during the times between the action? I feel a little more character development on and with Cali's friends would not hurt the story. Still the humor and characters are engaging and make these books lots of fun. Nice job.
It's not a good sign, that while I'm reading I'm already thinking of searching for a different book. That I'm actually tired and thinking about 4 more books makes me frustrated. It lacks something... humor, emotions... I'm not sure, but I'm bored! I'm interested in the factual plot, love the world, the gangs, races - it's all original... but still I'm bored :/ so... I'm putting it down and going to look for sth else and maybe somewhere in the future I'll finish it... No high hopes for that though :(
Cuz then Caliste could ride him and there could be a TON of jokes about ... Caliste is on FYRE! Love the humor and wow... the plot is getting twisty as a malaria virus! So many evil people ... I hope they all trip over each other! Howard S (the S stands for super fan)
Really enjoying this series! I enjoyed TR's last series and how he built his team. This new series is cleaner, has been very easy to get into and follow. Keep them coming please! ✌
The characters in this series are so interesting and the sub plots tie into the the overall story so well the whole becomes greater increasing the readers desire for the next segment of the series.
I love reading these stories with the different characters and what they can do. This is an adventure in fighting with different magic involved as well.
This is a really fun series, and so far I have really enjoyed that each book expands the universe and character depth. Thee is also a good amount of action and magic mixed in. I recommend this series and this book.
Cali gets a big surprise when she and Tay finally get to Atlantis. Lots of intrigue in this one and Can I had her hands full. Looking forward to the next one.
Cali is attacked outside the normal arena. She ends up going to New Atlantis and finds out her family is one of the Nine. Read to see what all happens.
Cali really coming up in the world, especially the New Atlantis world. But will it be a good (or safe) path for her and her friends, still remains to be seen.
I heard #5 came out today? How exciting is that!. I just finished 4 today. Must be fate..lmao. I was wrong about who Calls brother is, I will not say anymore...no spoilers from me!! Oh and Michael Do it, Do it!!
