This book came to me through my internship here in Denver. At The Empowerment Program they hand out his books to the folks looking to advance their lives after getting out of prison. Hassan, the author, is a local man who now helps others folks to create a new life after prison. His book is powerful because its real and his life and the good work he does is a testament to his words. They are words built on a solid foundation of self knowledge and growth. His book is structured in a linear way. The reader could either be person sitting in a cell or already out and wondering how to maintain that status. This book isn't just a practical guide like many prison books and materials are. It is about more than finding work and an apartment. He speaks to the hard truths of seeing yourself and your actions clearly and then learning to grow beyond it. This book is about all the inside work a person must do to grow and change. Its not about will power, but true and lasting change. I would most certainly urge anyone who has experienced prison to read this. Anyone who has experienced any level of the criminal justice system could find healing in these pages.
