It’s been a hell of a day for Abby Barlow. In just a few hours, she’s survived an explosion, watched her employer die, had a startling dream, and now she finds herself in a seedy Chicago hotel with the sexy, unearthly Dante, a vampire she both desires and fears.

For 341 years, Dante has stood as guardian to The Chalice, a mortal woman chosen to hold back the darkness. A ter

3.5 A Good Enough First In A Series Stars

Danielle The Book Huntress (Back to the Books)
Sadly, this is a very weak three stars. It was sooo hard to read this book. It just didn't keep my interest. My attention kept wandering, until there would be an appealing snippet that caught it, and then it would be off again.

Honestly, this is not a bad book. It's just underwhelming to a die-hard paranormal fan who has some favorite series that Bring It. I know that it's First Book Syndrome, because there are some ideas that I like about this series, that will make me keep reading (which is a

Abby isn’t having a good day. First she broke an expensive Ming vase, then her employer is murdered and she suddenly finds herself thrown in the middle of a paranormal war between good and evil, when she didn’t even know paranormals existed. And her only protector is the very sexy vampire Dante, who’s been driving her crazy for months.

Dante has been imprisoned for 341 years, forced to be the guardian of The Chalice, a mortal woman who hosts the Phoenix which is the only thing capable of keeping

Guardians of Eternity, Book#1

By the looks of other reviewers you’re either going to love this book or hate it. I’m in the former category, I loved this book. There’s not many books that can keep me riveted to my seat to do a 12 hour marathon cover to cover read; “When Darkness Comes” was one of them.

There’s just something about the hero and heroine, Dante & Abby, constantly being pursued by all manner of demons, and finding time for sex in all types of places that I just couldn’t get enough

Not sure why but I just didn't get into this book I didn't really like Abby and it drove me crazy that Dante called her lover its such a lame nickname. It took me 3 days to read this book with is forever for me when I like a book I read in within a day but I had to force myself to finish this book. I didn't buy their love and the plot was thin and they talked like a cheesy 80s sitcom. I hope the next one is better if not I will be done with this series!!
Opening Line: "Oh god, Abby. Don't panic. Just...don't...panic."

Sadly this was a DNF for me. That’s not to say at all that it’s unfinishable because it appears that some reviewers really liked it. It was more ICBBTFT (I can’t be bothered to finish this) when I have so many other books waiting for me that I know I’ll enjoy more and won’t have to force my way through.

I really hate not finishing a book though (especially when it's been sitting on my shelf for 2+ years and I’ve already bought the s

I wanted to try to get a review in real quick before I head off to work. So this will be a bit shorter than normal. I have of late been on the hunt for some good vampire romances lately, its been the type of trope I have been in the mood for. And when I saw a review for the most recent book in this series, I realized I hadn’t read this one yet…and that I needed to get a head start on it. So I grabbed it on B&N and started reading…and w

More vampire's and Demons, say I.!!!

I reeally enjoyed this story of Dante and Abby. Poor Abby has no idea what she has gotten herself into but the stranger, Dante, that stays at her employer's house is hot, mega hot. But then the house explodes and Selena is dead and now Abby is the Chalice. She has a mysterious power inside her body and the hunky vampire is now her protector. From wizards, to witches to demons to another vampire name approx Viper. This one keeps yopu interested to the end. Next
The snarky humor is overdone, making both Abby and the 300+ year old Dante sound like YA characters. The dialogue was inconsistent with the life-and-death struggle they were embroiled in when I quit in chapter 4.

Oh, DGIH. I laughed through this entire book. Sometimes, the laughs were for bits that were funny. Most of the time, it was for the unintentionally funny stuff. Like most of the romance. Methinks this book is going right into the sell pile. It really needs an editor. Well, I'm sure it has one, but it needs an editor who understands the difference between adjectives and adverbs. Being a grammar nazi, those mistakes were completely distracting.

I have this pet peeve when it comes to any kind of rom

This was my second time reading this and as noted below on my comments, I'm realizing my cheesy fun doesn't hold up well under the scrutiny of a second reading.

That said Ivy is a capable writer. Launching the Eternal Guardian series, I originally rated this book 4 stars. What a difference a year of reading PNR and UF makes!

The plot is not super original but it's fun. Abby Barlow, our heroine, is a young woman with a pure soul (so claims any vampire that gets a look at her, otherwise we readers

For those of you who don't have a relative or friend who's trying to prove how OVER something they are by constantly mentioning it, here is your chance to experience the wonderful thing that is paradox behaviourism. - I'm not saying it's not possible for a person to behave like this, but when people are constantly complaining about the woe that is them, while also demanding everyone to acknowledge their superior mindset, strength and overall existence, it becomes somewhat annoying. I don't give many "bad" reviews because I generally get to read books I know will be good or books recommended to me by people I trust. That was not the case with this book, recommended to me by someone who obviously doesn't know me as well as they thought.

This book was published in Jan 2007. I only heard about it recently. I read it because I was looking for a strong vampire series. This is NOT it.

First, I don't like books with a lot of sex, or panting about sex, or lusting for sex without some

I read many reviews about this story. And, I guess as one of them said you'll either love it or hate it. Well, I really liked it. The best thing I can say in favor of this witty tale is, it was about the good old fashioned real kind of Vampires. You know what I mean, no day light, no reflection, like a Bella Lugosi Dracula.

Some of the reviewers said they found Abby's character whinny. I found her snarky, cranky, irritable and funny, but not whinny. The only little thing I found annoying in this
I will admit it started out great. I was having a great time with it, but then it just became slow-paced and boring. The plot was just going nowhere. It took me forever to finish this book, I even read another book in between because I couldn't focus enough to go through it all at once.

Lately I have been learning that it is okay if a book has three stars. it means that I liked it, and while it may have some work to do to grow on me, I know that it will. Four stars means that I really really liked it, and five stars for me means that it is a book that will be picked up again and again and again. But three stars? There is no shame in three stars!

This book started out as a three star one but all of a sudden it seriously just smacked me in the face. Somehow the author managed to m

When Darkness Comes is the first book in a new paranormal romance series called the Guardians of Eternity by author Alexandra Ivy. When Darkness Comes is set in Chicago and includes demons, evil wizards, witches, and vampires.
This story is about Abby, who inherits the power of Phoenix (a good creation keeping the Prince of Darkness at bay), when her employer dies. Dante, the protector (or beast as referred to in the story), is a vampire and magically chained to that power to protect the Phoenix
I really liked this beginning to a new series for me!! The mythology is kind of great, and the author didn't overload us with it in this first seemed like she only revealed as much as we needed to know and more will be revealed as the series goes on. I hate first books that get bogged down by world-building.

I have to admit that Abby really annoyed me at the beginning of the book, but she grew on me as the story moved along. She was suddenly hit with a bunch of mayhem and she coped fair

I really wasn't sure how I was going to feel about Dante in the first couple of chapters but I loved him. He seemed a little cold and false to me at first. But he definitely was not. He has been secretly pining for Abby for months. He may be cold and ruthless with others but to Abby he was loving, kind, supportive and open. Abby was snarky at times but just the right amount. She had lived such a tough life. She was almost afraid to hope for someone for herself because of all she'd been through. ...more

My second time reading this one. Thoroughly enjoyed an afternoon spent with Dante and Abby. There were a couple of plot points that pulled me from the story now and again, but to be honest, now I have finished I can't remember them. It was a thoroughly entertaining read.

Abby has had a rough day after breaking her boss’s vase things just kept getting worse like the explosion that killed her boss. Or that fact that as her boss died she touched Abby passing on the phoenix that she has inside her. Suddenly Abby is thrust into a world she didn’t know existed where she’s hunted for being The Chalice by demons who want her for their dark prince. At least she won’t be alone because when she wakes up in Chicago with Dante her boss’s companion who’s determined to protec ...more

I bought When Darkness Comes because it was part of bundle special through Amazon. Even though the bundle is books 1, 2, and 7 (what?) I couldn't resist the price and the reviews looked pretty good. I knew nothing about this series beyond the couple reviews I'd read, but decided to give it try because I seem to be in a 'wing it' state of mind with regard to my reading choices these days. And I am very happy to say I really enjoyed this book!

I have to say this may be one of the worst books I've read in a long time. I am finding it difficult to even finish it. I don't know how anyone could have said they liked this except to say they must not have read some of the other more interesting and captivating stories that I have read. This book is very one demensional! There are so few characters in it and the love story is not something you can believe. I find the female lead very annoying and the Vampire is not much better. I can see this series turning out to be very promising. There was no reason for me to dislike this book, it just never grabbed me. I wasn't ever invested in the two main characters, and their romance was not very believable. They basically profess their undying devotion waaay to quickly. And there was no compelling reason for them to be so drawn to one another. I need a bit more 'getting to know you' time, or at least more interaction between my H/h before they fall madly in love. This was one of my rare attempts at PRN.

The story was decent. I know i don't read a lot of this genre, so i cant make a objective judgment. So i guess it was ok, a but predictable. And it was decently written.

It didn't take long to see that its not really about the story, its all about Aby (the plain mouse girl) and Dante (the oh-so-beautiful vampire hunk)....You get a bit of the story and then a lot about Dante. Like how gorgeous and sexy he is. And how wonderfully beautiful he looks....And t

Not really for me. Everything that happens in this book is far too ambigous - there is a darkness, there is this, there is a that, minimal explanations on how or why. That alone bothered me.
I'm not keen on the romance between the Dante and Abby - it feels like an amalgamation of everything I ever read before in this genre but without any depth to the characters. I find it hard to read books where they love each other from the word go, without question. It feels a little lazy, and the entire sto

Wow, I loved this book! Dante is a vampire who is chained to the Chalice-a woman who houses a goddess inside of her. Abby is the Chalice's assistant/servant. she sees Dante daily, but thinks he is her boss' lover. Abby has no clue who she works for.
When her boss is blown up in a magical explosion, Abby gets the spirit of the Phoenix, and it's up to Dante to keep her safe. He doesn't count on her being his true mate. It's a quick read, and a fun book, and I'm in love with Viper. I think his book
