Focuses on the childhood of the dynamic president, describing how Teddy worked hard to improve his poor health and developed a lifelong interest in nature and the conservation of natural resources.
This is a great series. I learned many new things about Teddy Roosevelt and it was enjoyable reading it to e. Knowing about Teddy Roosevelt and some of his history as an adult I could see how different aspects of his childhood shaped who he would become. Although I enjoyed this book, I did not think it was as well-written as the book on Dwight D. Eisenhower. The last chapter jumped way ahead and it was a little confusing at first to understand what was happening (if it was for me, it would be more so for a child). The last chapter summarized Roosevelt's adulthood through a play performed by youth one hundred years later. It was a little awkward and I'm not quite sure that e grasped some of the important aspects of Roosevelt's career. I know the series is titled "Childhood of Famous Americans" but after learning about Roosevelt's childhood, I think it's important to have some information about his adult career. Like I said, this could have been handled better. However, I still recommend it! This might trigger someone's interest in Teddy Roosevelt and lead them to reading about him more.
Although President Theodore (Teddy) Roosevelt was born into privilege, he was still a self-made man. He was a sickly child born into wealth that worked hard at turning his body into something that he could use to get what he wanted out of life. Severely asthmatic as a child, he adopted a vigorous lifestyle, becoming among other things a big-game hunter, explorer, cattle rancher, soldier, crusader for justice, author, conservationist, trust-buster and the 26th President of the United States. This book is a fictionized version of his youth, capturing his exuberant and dynamic personality. Some of his childhood antics are typical of what a mischievous boy would do, if you were a member of a wealthy family. Roosevelt never seemed to use his social rank to gain advantage and the energy and courage he had as a child went with him into adulthood. This is a fun book to read, for it is a true story of a child with a weak body that turned it into a strong one by sheer determination. Making him a hero to all 98-pound weaklings.
This series and The Who Was / Who is series are perfect for young people who love to learn about history. This series focuses more on different instances in the childhood of the subject. I found it an interesting read and it was in a way a nostalgic read since I read some of this series in Elementary school.
This is a good children's book. I thought it was a bit overly dramatized, but I am also not a child. Maybe that is what it needs to catch their attention.
I liked this book but it wasn't amazing it was ok. I liked how it was a book about lifetime. He married young at 22 that's really young. When he was young he had a passion for boxing.Which sucked because he got blind in one eye from one match. He would be a animal assassin too.Teddy roosevelt became the 26th president of the united states. In 1919 he died of a blood clot but will never be forgotten as one of the best presidents ever.
