On Being a Disciple of the Crucified Nazarene: Unpublished Lectures and Sermons

Rate this book
In this book Ernst Käsemann ― celebrated initiator of the twentieth-century “New Quest of the Historical Jesus” ― examines the problem of the relation between discipleship and faith. / Käsemann first tackles specific passages in the Synoptic Gospels dealing with the summons to discipleship. He makes clear the relevance of the biblical message to human existence even today. In the second half he explores how themes relating to specific contemporary problems fulfill that message. / Here is a theologian who is radically and passionately committed to discipleship of the crucified Jesus of Nazareth ― and who is not afraid to share that commitment.

Käsemann was born in Bochum. He obtained his PhD in New Testament at the University of Marburg in 1931, having written a dissertation on Pauline ecclesiology, with Rudolf Bultmann as his doctoral supervisor. Käsemann was one of Bultmann's more well-known politically left-of-centre 'pupils'.

I wish I could remember why I put this on my to-read list...I think it was based on a review in the magazine America. Kasemann's theology is too dense for me, and seems suitable only for a very narrow slice of academics. I read the first 50 pages or so, then flipped through the rest. My pragmatic side says the time, energy, and money spent writing and publishing this book would have better demonstrated discipleship of Christ by having been put toward an act of mercy, such as feeding the poor.
