Sometimes making waves is the only way to chart your true course.
Gavin Hart’s intentions are noble. He’s putting all his energy and every penny he’s got into the marine science education program he devised with his grandmother, a world-renowned environmentalist from Cape Cod. Big boat, special equipment, and a crew of salty characters—everything is ready to launch. All he needs is the backing of his influential family. Turns out that’s the one thing he won’t get—unless he agrees to settle down and marry the woman of their choosing. A self-proclaimed bachelor for life, he’s never been tempted. That is until he meets Sophie.
High school science teacher Sophie Martin is only subbing in town for a few months. Yet the allure of the Cape—its nautical charm and off-season ambiance—has her wishing she could stay longer. Not to mention she’s falling for a local man with a heart of pure gold. They have a lot in common, including a passion for inspiring young minds. Too bad her days there are numbered. Plus, her boyfriend back home is hinting at a ring. Should she return to her previous life? Or is she brave enough to upend everything and take a risk on a man she barely knows?

Gavin – Last Man Standing is a sweet romance I couldn’t stop reading. As someone who loves coastal towns and studying marine wildlife, I was totally in my element while reading this book. There’s no greater hero to me than teachers. Sophie is a teacher who wants to make a difference. I connected with her right away. I also connected with Gavin. He’s one focused man who is in need of a partner, someone to share his passion with. Their chemistry is electrifying yet stays sweet in Gavin – Last Man Standing. I loved reading their romance bloom into something wonderful. The emotional narration thrusts the reader into the story. Every emotion, every thought, and every feeling is poignantly described. The setting is the Cape and the seaside vibe is interwoven throughout the story. The plot moves at an excellent pace and the ending…wow! If you love romance, you’ll want to read Gavin – Last Man Standing. A sweeping sweet later-in-life romance not to be missed, Gavin – Last Man Standing is your next reading adventure. Highly recommend!
How would you react if the man you had been secretly watching from a distance suddenly appeared in front of you? That is exactly what happened to substitute science teacher Sophie Martin when she walked into the career fair being held in the school gym and discovered that Gavin Hart was one of the exhibitors.
Sophie and Gavin find that they share mutual interests and she becomes involved with a special project he is working on. But what are the chances that they will develop anything more than a working relationship?
Well, this story is a romance, so it is no surprise that the two have more than a science project in common. While the hint of romance is in the air from the start, the move from a friendly joint interest into a full romance comes about naturally. Both Gavin and Sophie are well developed characters and we get to know the major peripheral ones and understand how they fit into this tale.
The author describes the Cape Cod setting beautifully so that the reader feels as if he or she were there.
This is a novella, so things do move quickly, but not so fast that it makes the relationship feel contrived or rushed. If you are looking for a short and sweet romance, then I encourage you to pick up a copy of Gavin for your own library.

So the story follows Gavin Hart as he works to get his marine science education program into motion, and Sophie Martin, a high school teacher who decides to help him make it happen. As they do, they realize they feel more for each other.
The Characters: Amazing characters. Well-developed, well-written, sweet and loving characters. I felt what they felt and I rooted for all the things they wanted.
The Plot: Interesting plot obviously. But by the end of the book I felt everything was a little forced. For example, the last little conflict between Sophie and Gavin when his friend, whatever his name was, says something about the girl Gavin's family was setting him up with and Sophie gets angry. It was so quick I felt she was using that as an excuse to leave him. And then it was resolved just as quickly. It could be done better.
Who do I recommend it to? Anyone looking for a wholesome, soft, sweet read, grab this one! You'll love it.
Gavin Hart is not only handsome, he's extremely enthusiastic about saving the planet and following in the footsteps of his beloved grandmother. He is desperate to get funding for his environmental foundation which will encourage school children to care about the sea world around them and every living creature in it. Not interested in a relationship and especially not marriage, he ends up, eating his own words when he meets the beautiful and enthusiastic, teacher Sophie Martin, who has a big heart. Sophie is looking after her aunt Marjorie, and staying with her, but she spotted Gavin weeks ago, and is now torn between falling for a stranger or staying with her waste of a boyfriend out of habit. Will they risk their hearts on each other, only time will tell. As usual with Kathryn Hill's stories, this one is crammed full with humorous characters, a dog named Skye with a personality all of her own, and lots of emotion. Kathryn certainly has a talent for engaging her readers in her heart warming stories.
Gavin Hart is a firm believer in education and understanding our environment’s important. So he is investing all he can, time and money, into a marine science education program he and his grandmother started. All is ready for launch once he gets the financial backing of his wealthy family. But their generosity comes with a price tag of its own. He is to marry a woman they choose, and it’s looking like his stepmother’s friend, Neela.
And then he meets Sophie Martin, a temporary high school science teacher. They both have much in common, especially a burning desire to inspire learning. Her current boyfriend, the one she should break up with, is hinting at a proposal. Will she get the courage to tell him it’s over? Will she be even more courageous to admit she wants something more with Gavin?
He is trying to save the earth, water and its animals
Sophie has been watching hot boat guy for awhile .When she runs into him at school event he starts talking about his ideas to help the kids find out science is great while helping with global warming and the earth, sea and all it contains. Its something that really interests Sophie when he tells her about the learning trips he hopes to provide for students.Sophie really would love to work with Gavin and he makes her heart flip over an butterfly in her stomach.there are so many twists and turns to this story you will be riveted til the very last page. Will Sophie a,nd Gavin fall in love will they make a success out of his dream ?Will they find their way to happiness.I can hardly wait to see what's next by this multi talented author.
I'm really enjoying these Last Man Standing books. Gavin is especially great. You've got a science minded man who is so consumed with his goal that he hasn't had time to enjoy life, or a good woman. Sophie is a science teacher subbing at a local high school who has watched for months as Gavin fixes up his boat hoping to get his project of field trips for kids on marine biology off the ground. I really liked how humble Gavin was and that he wasn't a typical alpha who walked over everyone. He treated Sophie with respect and it was great seeing these two, who had so much in common, as they fell in love. The characters were well written and the plot enjoyable. I'd absolutely recommend this book for a quick read!
Gavin (Last Man Standing––Book 6) is a sweet, heartwarming, delightful romance. I loved this story. Being a native New Englander, I loved the Cape Cod setting, which Kathryn Hills described so beautifully I felt like I'd had a weekend getaway on the Cape when I finished. Seriously...I could smell the salt in the air, see the colorful hydrangeas, and had a sudden craving for fried clams and an ice cream cone after. Lol. The main characters are both lovely people, and perfect together. A nice book about nice people in a gorgeous setting. What's not to love? I'll tell you––nothing! I loved everything about this book. Do yourself a favor and escape to romantic Cape Cod through its pages.
This is a beautifully written story with a surprising twist that had me cheering. Sophie is teaching at the high school temporarily. Gavin is trying to launch his non-profit, The Beatrice Hart Education Foundation. As Gavin and Sophie get to know each other, they learn that a former romance took place between two people they know. Who could it be? Absolutely wonderful. I loved this story and it was a delight to read about Gavin’s dog, Sky, too. Grab you copy and see what happens. I think you’ll be happen with the story.

Kathryn Hills’ book Gavin, although book 6 in the Last Man Standing Series, can be read as a standalone. I loved this later in life romance. The premise and plot was written so well that I could smell the sea water, feel the breezes coming off of Cape Cod, and sense the intense connection between the two main characters. Will Gavin and Sophie find their way to happiness? Will he make his dream come true with her help? Will his rich family approve of her and thus help back his ambition?
Ms. Hill, novella is so wonderfully written that once you open the book you are in it, as if you are living and breathing the story.
He's married to his work. She's almost married to the wrong man. Gavin and Sophie form a friendship based on common interests. His dog, Sky, is a trip, herding people around the dock and boat. The setting is beautifully described, the characters are genuinely nice, leaving me with a big smile as I finished the book. The author's notes at the end of the book are amazing, reminding the reader of what's really important. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
This is such a lovely romance between Gavin and Sophie. Neither was expecting romance but they found it and I loved this story! Gavin is determined to help save the world by encouraging students to study the sea world on the boat he is revamping. And Sophie is a teacher in a short term position while she helps out her aunt. They meet and they have great chemistry even though they fight it and try to convince themselves they are just friends working together on a project to better the world. This is an easy quick read that I really enjoyed!
Can a temporary teaching position turn into something permanent?
I was given this book by the author, during recent author/reader games. My review is unbiased. Sophie's taking the temporary teaching position was two-fold. A change to help her favorite aunt out after surgery and decide finally where her heart is. Gavin, man of little words, is working non-stop in hopes of his foundation taking off. Can the two of them speak frankly and find love and permance? I can easily recommend this fun, romantic, clean read.
Gavin and Sophie have a lot more in common than the guy she’s dating back home and the woman his father keeps trying to match him to. They both love the ocean and teaching about it to kids. I loved reading about his educational boat tours and should look into taking one. They have their rocky moments, but what romance story doesn’t. Her aunt with the card games and scratch tickets is a trip. His goofy rambunctious herding dog is adorable.
This fun, frothy light romance was a pleasure to read. The characters were interesting and the story had just the right amount of ups and downs to keep you engaged. The subtitle says book 6 but don’t let that worry you. It’s a stand alone book, no previous reading required. If you love books about characters finding love in unexpected places “Gavin” is for you.
Another Last Man Standing falls! Gavin is a winner. Sophie is his perfect match and the missing piece in this confirmed bachelor’s life. But her time in town could be short, and a meddling father and persistent admirer stir up trouble. There’s a satisfying little twist at the end that adds to the happily ever after and makes this a sweet read that you’ll enjoy from beginning to end.
A well written story that keeps you engaged and characters you love getting to know. The story flows smoothly from page to page and them attraction between the characters is undeniable. A great series you'll be glad you added to your summer reading list.

A good love story . When Sophie goes to help her Aunt Margie in Cape Cod and she meets up with Gavin and helps him with a science project which involves her school students on a job she is subbing for a few months. Will Sophie and Gavin find love?
A short sweet romance story. A heartwarming and enjoyable read that took me on an adventure to Cape Cod with some amazing and interesting characters. Loved following along and enjoying it all with them.
