Dog Walkers #2

The Night She Got Lucky

Rate this book

Her marriage is over. Her newspaper career went belly up. And it won't be long before her two teenage sons are off to college... and then what? Sometimes it seems like the only thing Ginger Garrison can count on is her beloved Bichon Frisé and the loyal women in her dog-walking group. But her luck is about to take a wild turn. . .

A diplomatic snafu has sidelined the globe-trotting nature photographer Lucio "Lucky" Montevez, a man known as much for his wild personal life as his wildlife images. Now stuck in the States and forced to shoot pet portraits for a living, his prospects look downright tame... until Ginger enters his world (along with her boys, her spoiled pooch, and her egomaniacal ex-husband). Lucky's always been a love-her-and-leave-her kind of guy, but something about the spirited, sensual Ginger makes him want to stick around. But will Lucky's playboy past end up costing him the only woman he's ever really loved?

Absolutely ridiculous. I am surprised I even reached the middle before finally giving up on it. Lucky was a manwhore who took advantage of a horny, unloved 40 years old woman, promising to warn her before he left her eventually. WTF? Is there a new definition for the word 'hero' that I don't know, because he sounds more like a jackass to me.

This is the second book in Susan Donovan's "Dog Walker" series about a group of friends who are all pretty much dog loving man haters. They stand alone really, but the common thread between novels might be nice. I liked the first one quite a bit, and I'll likely buy the third one.

However: this book (excuse my language) was BALLS.

I *LOVE* Susan Donovan so I was really surprised, but I just could not even truly finish this. The heroine is a drop dead beautiful woman who thinks she's old and ugly. She put up with a verbally abusive dip$hit of a husband for 17 years and now is being romanced by a latin 'love 'em and leave 'em' guy. Who loves her. is great to her teenage sons. cherishes her from page 1. Meanwhile he's got somebody messing with his reputation, making him out to be a spy... and he's got to do 'battle' repeatedly with the ex-husband. LAME.

The heroine, from where I sit, is just plain stupid. She was weak, stupid, vain, and the more I read the more I disliked her. In the beginning there is a scene that made me say "oh EWW" out loud involving her and her 'imagining' intimate acts with the latin lover dude (a virtual stranger at that point) and thinking that she was imagining it when it was ACTUALLY HAPPENING. Um, no I don't see how that's possible.

At page 140 or so I gave up and skim/sped read the rest. My opinions went down, down, down... I was thrilled when I could call it done and move it OUT of my TBR pile.

This book was the second in the Dogwalker series. From what I gather, this is Donovan’s first series and I’m so happy that she’s finally doing one! I like to watch characters progress and grow.

Ginger Garrison has hit a rough patch. Her career at The Herald is over, her ex-husband keeps rubbing it in her face that she’s getting older, her sons keep eating her out of house and home, and her dress at her friend Josie’s wedding is a size too small. Now the crazy lady officiating the wedding is giving her a hard time about her love life. After speaking to said crazy lady, Ginger basically passes out and is, literally, swept off her feet by Lucio “Lucky” Montevez. Lucky, a well-known photographer with a number of beautiful women left in his wake, is also in a rough patch. Amid a international scandal, Lucky is licking his wounds in San Francisco when he comes across Ginger. Hoping to give his career a boost, Ginger helps Lucky to start a pet photography business and the two of them take it from there…

I really enjoyed this book. I love Donovan’s style, her characters are a lot of fun, and the fact that this is now a series makes me very happy. The next book, Not That Kind of Girl, is the final chapter in this series and is set to be released soon. Donovan is an author you might want to check out if you like Carly Phillips, Susan Anderson, Christie Ridgway, Susan Mallery or Rachel Gibson. Her books tend to be on the funny side and have great relationships between the main characters and friends. Her characters tend to be a little older than the typical romance novel leads, but I find that their life experience helps to bring the story together more.

I struggled quite a bit with this book too
The heroine was incredibly shallow and obsessed by her looks and fading youth. Her mother and former husband were partly responsible for that obsession but she made it all worse by herself. Her ranting about her so-called starting menopause really irritated me deeply, especially as I realized later that she managed to get herself pregnant in one single time. Something many women much younger never succeed in. I can have no compassion or feel anything positive for people or characters that invent problems out of nowhere.
At least what I can admit is that she found the right person for herself. Another completely self-absorbed and uninteresting person that I would never like to have a drink or dinner with.
An almost complete miss. The only characters I find mildly endearing in this book were the teen children.

I am so sick and tired of this helpless women who want love and loving touch and then comes the loving touch. FUCK YOU.

I love a good romance even if it's far stretched. But it's painful to read how desperate women are and how without any fucking self respect. Atleast if you are having one night stand do it with fucking style.

Maybe I'm just jaded, but I didn't love this story. I remember thinking that the first book in this serious was sweet and funny. Maybe it's the characters in this one. Or maybe the formula only works once.

Ginger is 40, gorgeous, divorced, mother of twin 15 year old boys and dog owner. She is lso ridiculously obsessed with getting older. When the book opens she is a wearing a dress a size too small and she can't breathe, and throughout she spends time trying not to have emotions so she won't get wrinkles. And she is obsessing about the fact that she is going through menopause, even though everyone, including her doctor said she was not. Lucio is a world traveling photographer. After a run of really bad luck he is a breath away from prison and his professional name is mud. When they meet at their friends wedding sparks start to fly and their story begins.

I guess my problem is how this self-proclaimed selfish man can suddenly be so sensitive to the neurotic woman's needs. It's hard to figure out why he's drawn to her to begin with. And unlike her other heroines, Ginger is both needy and closed off, so she's just running herself in neurotic circles. I liked her sons, and I kept waiting for something major to happen with them. The mystery of the story was both good and bad. It was good because I didn't figure out what was going on until late in the story. Bad because there was something not urgent about it. It's like someone spilled milk, I think it was this person although that seems weird. Oh well let's clean up the milk and move on. Oh it's months later and you know what I think this person may have spilled the milk instead. Good to know, but dude, it's been months, I've bought new milk and you're never getting the spilled stuff back, don't cry over it.. I mean yes, it was a much larger scale type thing, but that's how it felt. So when the big story climax came, I felt like we had to fake it. Plus you wonder why if spilling the milk was so important, why was that the end of it. It seemed that if the bad guy's plans hadn't been discovered the baddy might now have done anything more.Like why stop at the milk, why not empty the whole fridge? (Ok, I think I've sucked that metaphor dry.)

It was sort of the same for the relationship. It fell a little flat. And I'll never understand the cliche that people will so readily believe something bad about someone they know when the information comes from a virtual stranger.

Anyway, not my favorite, but not enough to give up on Susan Donovan or this series.

The only previous novel that I’ve read by this author is the predecessor in this series, Ain’t Too Proud To Beg, which I really enjoyed. I hear that others have problems with some of her newer releases, but since I’m a recent reader, I am not familiar with her previous work and have enjoyed each book of hers that I’ve read so far, including THE NIGHT SHE GOT LUCKY. I need to preface this review to say that I am not a dog person and dogs play an important part in this series. The dogs are a reflection of the heroine’s personalities and where they are at in their lives. It is a great testament to the author’s writing skills that I could sit and read these stories. The dogs add to the story but don’t take away from the main focus of Grace and Lucky’s developing relationship.

Grace is the type of woman almost anyone can identify with, or at least woman of a certain age or life experience could. She’s recently divorced to a man who knows how to push all her buttons in the wrong way. She’s at an age where she’s wondering if life has passed her by and she’s the single parent to two sons. When Lucky crashes into her life, he transforms it. Lucky the photographer is so different from anything that she’s ever known. For the first time in her life, she has a man who is making her feel important, putting her needs before hers. It’s a heady and scary thing as all her barriers she built up around herself are stripped away. It’s heady because no one has ever made her feel like this before. It’s scary because she’s realizing that everything she had before this was a lie, so she has to redefine her entire belief system.

THE NIGHT SHE GOT LUCKY is an amazing transformation story. I can’t say enough good things about it. The chemistry between Grace and Lucky were off the charts. The conflict in their relationship was believable based upon the growth they both needed as characters. And I totally bought into Grace and Lucky’s happily ever after. The only thing that I didn’t get in this series was the matchmaker lady. I totally don’t get her purpose and the slightly magical quality about her that doesn’t fit into the overall feel of the series. However, since it is such a minor thing I was able to ignore it and really enjoy THE NIGHT SHE GOT LUCKY.

THE NIGHT SHE GOT LUCKY

OVERALL RATING: 4 LUCKY STARS!

Genevieve "Ginger" Garrison is tired of waiting for the one. After a failed marriage which left her with two teenage boys and an ex-husband who acts like a teenager too, finding a man is her least priority. But at the wedding of her best friend she meets Lucio "Lucky" Montevez, the hunky Spanish photographer.

I adore this book so much! The way the plot was made to make it hilarious while still being able to render deep emotions from its readers was what made me love this book.

This book is the second book from the "Dog Walkers" series. Most of the characters from the first book is also present here and this book starts of with Josie's marriage. Like the first book, it also has some action in it. But unlike the first one where it is obvious, here in this book it was very surprising and somehow unexpected.

I loved the title since it has two meanings; one is where the heroine gets lucky, and the second one is where she gets Lucio "Lucky" Montevez.

Book 2 in the dogwalker series from Susan Donovan was, to me, not as good as the first. While the hero/heroine did have chemistry, it wasn't enough to carry the book. There was very little excitement except for the climatic scene to wrap the book and some questions were left a bit unanswered. I liked the shower scene and would love to have a shower like the one in the book. It reminded me of another shower scene in another book by another author. ( I'll have to go back and re-read that book just for fun.) This was another good book to have in a traffic jam or while waiting for the next flight at the airport. I am looking forward to the 3rd book, but not as much as I normally would when one of Donovan's new books gets released.

This was a fun light read. It took me awhile to warm up to Lucky. When I first met him, he seems as fake and one-dimensional as the paper he was wrote on. Slowly though he filled out and became the man you would be proud to know. There are some eye-rolling moments in the book and some giggle out-loud moments. I was happy how things ended up and am looking forward to Roxy's story. She needs her HEA.

Mmmm.... this book was eager. I mean the relationship seemed eager right off the bat.

Ginger Garrison is jobless and divorced. And the only thing going for her is her friends and her dog. One of her best friends recently got married and she fell into the arms of a mysterious Spanish male in the dark. Lucio ‘Lucky’ Montevez is simply taken by Ginger and all her glory. He finds her sensual and practical. He wants to be with her and he turns on his charm full force but she resists it. Lucky has his own problems he has to take care of anyway. A world renowned photographer, his reputation is being dragged through the mud. But when you leave broken hearts wherever you go the ladies are bound to go crazy. He thinks a past ex is setting him up so he tries to clear his name. But that storyline goes in a direction you prolly never thought it would. Lucky needs money so he starts taking pictures of dogs and Ginger becomes his first customer. And then they spark together.

This was an interesting read. I thought this would be a more sappy read but the ending turned almost criminal. T was an interesting twist. It didn’t have that feel throughout the whole book, but I like surprises.

This is book two in a series, it's very similar to book #1. The characters are charming, the men are too perfect to be believed, the dialogue is fast and clever, and the sex is raunchy. That took off two stars for me, just too steamy. The first scene between Ginger and Lucky is completely unbelievable. I also didn't like how much the focus was on Lucky thinking Ginger is beautiful while she's supposed to be discovering beauty and youth aren't everything. I thought the. message was a little mixed, the dilution took away it's potency.

Another ridiculous moment is when a character is going to drive into San Francisco three days a week from Sonoma to walk her dog with friends at 6 a.m. Really? No freaking way.

It was nice to revisit the characters from the first book, I always like that about a series. I don't know if I'll read the third. Maybe if the tips of my ears calm down from bright red.

Liked the bit of mystery along with a love story with a play on words title. The characters though we're not real for me. Ginger was an "all about myself" type of person. She still had her beauty but was hung up on her looks so much, upset about raising her sons yet not sure she was that involved in their life before, her dog was her world as it is for her friends. Lucky was such an Italian type lover yet hard to believe he could change his jet setting photo life so much, become a father to teens. Did feel sorry for his friend's deception. The sex scenes got steamy but there wasn't a lot of them. The first sex scene was so unrealistic, dream becomes organism becomes reality.

Sorry everyone.... I've read some of Susan Donovan's books and liked several, but this is by far the silliest, stupid, and strange characters I've read in a while. It's a good thing I had it with me on vacation and had nothing else to read or I'd have tossed it away!

Summary: THE NIGHT SHE GOT LUCKY is the super-sexy story of Ginger Garrison and Lucio Montevez. Now forty and divorced, Ginger is certain she’d rather spend her nights with her spoiled Bichon Frise than waste another minute with a man who doesn’t adore her. Then she meets Lucio – or “Lucky” as his friends call him – a renowned nature photographer as famous for breaking hearts as he is for as taking pictures. Is Lucio capable of staying put? With one woman? Or will he be on the first plane to Bora Bora once he’s made Ginger his latest conquest? -- Author's Website

First Line: Ginger perched on the edge of Mrs. Needleman's guestroom bed, wondering what the old woman wanted to discuss.

This is the second book in Donovan's series about a group of dog-loving friends who have sworn off men - only to then stumble upon the man of their dreams with a little bit of help from Mrs. Needleman, an intense matchmaker. Donovan's romance is quite a bit steamier than I am used to, so I get a little warm and I'm often a bit squeamish when reading these in public, but the stories themselves are so hilarious and touching that I just can't put them down. I found Lucio, or Lucky, to be a bit too much of the stock Latin-lover character, although I did enjoy him very much. From the previous book, I didn't think I would like Ginger at all, as she came off as a weak, egomaniac. However, once I got into her head in her own story, the reasons for her obsession with her physical appearance (a mother addicted to plastic sugery and an ex-husband who was always recommending she get a nip or a tuck) I empathized with her lack of self-esteem and cheered as she began to overcome her past. I loved her teenage boys, although this story, like so many other romance novels, glossed over the difficulty of dating with kids from a previous marriage. They adored Lucio from the beginning and were never suspicious or resentful of him, which, as the child of a divorce, I find very hard to believe. Ginger's little Bichon Frise, HeatherLynn, was also adorable and an excellent mirror for Ginger's issues. I felt that the ending was a bit abrupt and didn't really work through some of the remaining issues. Still, I loved this book overall and can't wait to read the next one in the series.

****SPOILER ALERT***
This book was an okay read. I liked that it was about a woman-40 years of age with a set of teen age boy twins. In the beginning, I must admit that I was kind of turned off by a few things that I was reading but in the end it was an okay read.

Geneveve, auburn hair, tall, slender and 40 yrs old was married to her college sweetheart Larry who is now a Urologist. Their marriage did not last due to his love for younger females and fast cars. So they split up. He did a doozie on Ginger as she is referred to in the book due to her stunning resemblance of Ginger on Gilligans Island. He really made her feel like she needed a face lift and a new body and a younger look. Her self esteem went shooting out the door.

Then as fate would have it she meets young, and attractive Lucio better known as Lucky in the book. Well he's not that young, he's 38 which is great ha! He bumps into her at her friends wedding and it was an odd way to meet someone. Her dress was size 4 but she was actually a size 6, but she squeezed into the dress regardless. As she came out of Mrs. Needlemans room, she fainted from her dress squeezing the living bajezzies out of her and Lucky caught her before the fall and took her to her room, laid her on the bed and gave her a peck on her cheek. She wakes up and screams as if he did something terrible to her, when indeed he didn't. The story was a good read because things unfold in the end. Lucky was known as a famous photographer traveling the world to capture beautiful pictures and at the same time seeing and leaving beautiful women. A heart breaker in other words.

Ginger and Lucky get together but the ending has a nice twist which made this book an okay read for me. Find out what twists happen to Ginger and Lucky.

I didn't dislike this book but I am finding that this series of books lacks the magic of He Loves Lucy and The Kept Woman.
They were my first books with Susan Donovan but I havent liked any of her others as much as I did those 2.

I think maybe its the plot of a group of dog walkers who happen to be best friends, who hate men then start to find love one by one.
Also the women are older than what I am used to from this genre of books.

Now I am not saying I hated it, it was a nice easy light hearted easy. Not taxing on the brain at all. It also had some really funny dialogue at times and I did have to stop myself on laughing out loud when at work.

My real issue was that there was no relationship/friendship lead up for the sex, it started pretty much straight away, and then instantly they were "in love".
The love scenes were definately hot and you felt the chemistry between the 2 main characters.
But the story did not flow as well as some of her previous books and I didnt have the uncontrollable urge to keep on reading until it was finished.

I am not sure I will be getting the next in the series unfortunately. But as soon as her older books come out for the Kindle in the UK I will be buying them.

Ginger Garrison is a single mother, thanks to finding her ex-husband in bed with another woman. Bride’s made dresses can be killer. Take it from Ginger, who knows first hand. Ginger went outside to get some fresh air when she fainted into the arms of a handsome man.

Lucio “Lucky” Montevez used to be a very famed photographer. He was the most requested photographer. He would travel all over the world taking pictures of unique wildlife. Due to an unfortunate incident, Lucky is now let shooting pictures for weddings.

Lucky offers to photograph Ginger and her dog. Could this be the start of a beautiful friendship or something more?

The Night She Got Lucky is a lucky day for readers. It is like scoring the jack pot. I really pleasantly enjoyed this book. I thought Ginger’s naiveness to Lucky’s charm and charisma was sweet and funny. Lucky and Ginger were gold together. The chemistry between them was smoking hot. There were so many laughs to be had in this book. Lucky can take my picture any day. He is so good looking. Susan Donovan has won me over with this book. I plan to keep reading her books.

Ugh.. it takes a lot for me to rate a book this low, but this one was just unbelievable! I can't imagine a less plausible heroine - someone who, IN THE FIRST CHAPTER OF THE BOOK, flirts with the wedding photographer where she is a bridesmaid, and who then decides to self-pleasure herself OUTSIDE after the wedding ... and who then doesn't realize that her self-pleasuring has been replaced by a male mouth??!!
And thus starts the relationship of Ginger and Lucky.

I'm not a prude by any stretch of the imagination, but this scene sets the stage for what has to be a truly awful quick read. The frustrating thing is that I got the feeling as if it was just a bunch of ideas sketched out and written quickly to make a deadline, without anyone ever asking themselves if what they are writing or editing makes sense. I've enjoyed this author before, so my frustration is higher because I KNOW she can - and has- done so much better in the past.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

Cute book that almost got put away for a very stupid moment at the beginning.

What I enjoyed:
* The twins and their bickering.
* The friendship between the dog walkers.
* The fact that Ginger believed in Lucky after being told some bad things (until she saw "proof" in writing).
* Lucky at this moment. He sounds like he was a complete and total jerk previously.
* Ginger was a great mom.

What could have been better:
* I knew who the villain was and why the instant the character was introduced. Way too obvious.
* Seriously, who had fantasies while awake that are so good they don't notice that a real person is doing that to their body? I hate this plot device.
* I was surprised the villain went as far as they did.

You've got the love a bunch of women who give up men and decide to spend the rest of their lives with their dogs. Yeah, not going to happen. This is book 2 of the series and followed the first one perfectly. You will love both Ginger, her twin boys and Lucio. They make a wonderful family together. We don't want to forget about the friends that are both two footed and four. You have to read these in order because too much of the first books information is given in the second.

40 year old devorcee, Ginger, happens to be a "Ginger" from Gilligan's Island look alike. She was destined to meet Lucio "Lucky" Montevez, a renowned nature photographer, who is a better looking, sexier version of Antonio Banderas. Can that even be possible? Together with the help of friends and her teenage twin sons, they start a "petography" business. Of course they have some pretty steamy sex and fall madly in love. Delightful fast and easy read.

Donovan always turns out brain candy for smart women, and this is no exception. While the conflict wasn't as emotionally strong as other Donovan novels, the comedy was great - particularly in her hilarously dreadful ex-husband. The supporting cast is well drawn, and the personalities of the dogs come through very well. I cannot wait for her to publish the last 2 in this series of 4!

The beginning of this little romance was very abrupt--almost as though the story picks up mid-plot. I enjoyed the stuff that followed, though. A group of women, soured on love, twin teenage boys, and an idiotic ex husband is enough to be entertaining. Throw in an exotic "sexual panther" and his devoted best friend for some suspense and hardship and it leads to a pretty exciting climax.

This is the second installment in the dog walkers series that tells Ginger's story. Ginger is recently divorced and unemployed when she meets Lucky Montevez, a world renown photographer in the midst of a scandal. Great characters including all of the dogs in the dog walker club. Racy with just enough intrigue to keep it interesting. All in all, a good beach read.
