DSV, the elite secret service tasked with fighting Daedalus, the descendants of the Nazis, are winning. They have captured more of their agents and assets in the past six months than the previous twenty years, and the plans for a Fourth Reich appear to be crumbling. But all is not as it seems. A whistleblower has identified a mole high up in the DSV hierarchy. But more worrying still is the identity of that informant… ruthless Daedalus commander Hans Bauer . Why would he give up such a valued operative? When word reaches them of a devastating Daedalus operation, codenamed Steel Thunder, Ethan Munroe , elite DSV operative, is tasked with only one find the Daedalus core and bring them to justice, ending this seventy year-long cat and mouse game once and for all. But with a cataclysmic attack on the horizon, one that will eclipse anything the world has seen before, he is running out of time. A nerve-shattering conspiracy thriller with a devastating twist that will leave you reeling, perfect for fans of Scott Mariani, Clive Cussler and Adam Hamdy.
Even for me…and I can believe everything. Some of the plot lines were to say the least tenuous. And like the Bond films there were more than enough times for the baddies to finish off the good guys. That said I enjoyed the romp.
Story of an elite secret service DSV fighting the descendants of the Nazi’s. With Ethan Munroe as a ‘Boys Own’ type character.
Have to say by the end I didn’t really care about which way the story was going. Suffice to say I don’t think I will be hunting out other books in the series.
This second book in the Disavowed series by R. D. Shah is a gripping conspiracy thriller with a twist that you will never see coming. This edition is a continuation of the first book in the series and therefore, it is highly recommended to read the predecessor before jumping to read this one. Else you would be drowned in the identities of the characters and the very foundation upon which this series is based.
To recap, the Disavowed is an elite undercover agency formed by the US, the UK, and France after WWII to prevent the rise of Nazis. However, unbeknownst to the world, a secret society called Daedalus is emerging and re-organizing, birthed by Nazis of a pure bloodline and they have infiltrated the echelons of power and politics all over the world in an attempt to create a fourth Reich. The protagonist is a hostage negotiator, Ethan Monroe, later inducted into the elite DSV and successfully foiled an attempt by an assassin named Icarus, to create unrest between the UK and Germany. In the culmination of the first installment in the series, a high-ranking Daedalus official, Hans Bauer is arrested and the DSV is on the brink of their first step of victory. Alas, what they did not realize is that Daedalus had infiltrated into the DSV as well.
This book opens with Howard Getz, a high flyer within the financial system, who is believed to be funding the Daedalus operations being whisked away by the DSV into Cape Wrath, a secret confinement of the world’s dreaded criminals from where there is no escape. Ethan is flooded with memories of how Hans Bauer was captured and brought to this place. During his interrogation, Hans reveals the mole within the DSV, which comes as a rude awakening to the whole DSV unit. While the unit scrambles to uncover the truth behind this whistleblower, a well-planned savage attack is executed on Cape Wrath, from where Hans escapes and the Daedalus mole within the DSV becomes collateral damage. Ethan is unable to comprehend why would Daedalus give up their valued operative within the DSV unless there is something bigger planned.
Ethan and his team learn about a devastating Daedalus operation, code-named Steel Thunder, but have no idea of its magnanimity. With a cataclysmic attack on New York City, the DSV is tasked with only one mission - to find and decimate the core of the Daedalus operation so that the sleeper cells do not arise again. Meanwhile, Ethan is coerced by Daedalus to carry out a nefarious heist in Russia, which would then be used to implicate DSV as the evil force, attempting to create disruptions in the democratic world. Daedalus seems to be well-organized, planned and one step ahead of the DSV and Ethan is running out of time.
Will Ethan beat the time to reach the core of Daedalus and uncover their faces and missions? Does the Daedalus have other moles within the DSV or in the high-ranking political circles of the US or UK, who could leak their plans?
There is a lot of action as the plot transforms into a high-octane roller coaster chase between the heroes and the bad guys, spies, counter-spies, and moles. You can get up close in a flat-bottomed skiff - but prepare yourself for a pretty jaw-dropping experience of some twists and turns that will keep readers on the edge of their seats. While a substantial portion of the book is played out in Russia, it spans other countries, like the US and UK as well. Apart from Ethan, John McCitrick, the head of DSV has also a pivotal role in this edition of the Disavowed.
Another brilliant writing by the author R.D. Shah and I am looking forward to the next book in the series. I will strongly recommend reading the first book in the series - Project Icarus before this one to have a clearer understanding of the evolution of the characters.
This was a wild ride and I was totally here for it! I read the 1st book in the series in prep for this ARC and I am so glad I did, there was so much backstory. While I know this is fiction the ideas of anti-Semitism and nazism are rife today and terrifying...if I was a conspiracy theorist I could totally see this happening, or attempting to happen in today's world. I can't wait to read what's in store in the next book!
This book is non-stop action & intrigue. It moved from one situation to another with more twists & turns than a plate of spaghetti. However in saying that not all the transitions were made smoothly with a couple being a little clunky and others being a little obvious. The story was entertaining however and I look forward to seeing how the series continues in part three.
Espionage & intrigue! The Fourth Reich? Action/adventure! Graphic sadistic electrocution. The good guys with a chain saw, 2 legs and an interesting couch.
I fun twisty turny spy novel. I look forward to book 3! The narration was great!
A good second outing for Ethan Monroe. Six months after the events in the first book starts the next adventure, good action and plenty of twists along the way. The narration like the first is excellent. Thanks to Saga Egmont audio and Netgalley for this review copy
