As far as race and sex are concerned - it's a produce of it's time. Don't know how many people read Raddall anymore. He was a well-known Canadian author at one time.
I am really enjoying Head’s books. There is more subtlety and nuance than one might expect in spite of the time in which the book was written and the time in which it is set, and the evocation of Nova Scotia is rich. There is definitely some hard language and objectionable stereotype here too and they are not fully excused by the times described. But I still enjoyed the book and will read more of his work.
