What Family Means
To Debra Bradley, marriage is being with the man you've always loved - despite the odds. Despite what other people think. And marriage is about family, about protecting your children from a sometimes hostile world.
To her husband, Will Bradley, family is about creating a safe haven. Where it doesn't matter that one of you is white, the other black. Where it's never mattered...
All these years later Will and Debra are still in love, still each other's best friend. They've made a good life for themselves and their children. But their daughter, Angie - pregnant and estranged from the husband she loves - has to discover for herself what family means....

This book focuses on the relationship of an inter-racial couple that began when the two of them were just children in the 1950s. Will, is an African-American man who grew up in an affluent home. Debra is a white woman who grew up on the wrong side of the tracks. Neither set of parents approved of the relationship, but, in true romance novel fashion, love conquers all.
Now their daughter has found herself in the same situation as what her parents experienced: alone and pregnant. Will love conquer all in her case too?
I wished the author had focused more on the difficulty that Will and Debra experienced. There seemed to be conflict between Debra and Will's mother, but it was never made clear if she disapproved of the color of Debra's skin or the fact that she did not come from a privileged background like Will.

This is a heart warming story of three generations of a family whose love and history spans a time of great political and emotional change in our country. It is a story about connections, attitudes and acceptance. As the mother of a family that still, to this day, deals a bit with some of the prejudice addressed in the book (although to a greatly limited extent), I found myself relating a bit to Debra. Throughout the story, regardless of the times or struggles, love wins out, and isn't that what we all hope for?
