I first discovered Sam Zien on Discovery Health channel. Yeah, TV. I don't actually have any TV reception, but I get some shows on itunes, and this was one of my favorites. Not only is he witty, realistic about cooking, and down to earth, but he has some amazing recipes complete with short-cuts that yield tasty results without having an ingredient list that is longer than my arm. And you know what? If you're more likely to make something yourself when you have a recipe with a short ingredient list accompanied by clever short-cuts instead of heading out for take-out, then you're in a better place. I thank Sam for that bit of wisdom.
As an aside, I would not recommend this book for reading as you're laying in bed ready to get some sleep. It will make you hungry, and fill your head with quick and easy cooking ideas. Then you will likely raid your cupboards and fridge for tasty ingredients and maybe eat too much and stay up way too late. Which would totally defeat the purpose of this cookbook. Just sayin'...
This book was kind of a disappointment. You'd have to be a REALLY inexperienced cook to think his ideas were great in this book. A lot his tips were to buy pre-made mashed potatoes, meatloaf, etc... or frozen what-nots from the store to save you time. Well duh... If you were a new cook, I think you'd appreciate tips like that more.
