Obviously you aren't going to learn everything about makeup and special FX from books. However they do offer a good base of knowledge to start with. I really enjoyed this book a lot. I've used tips from it on several short films already. I especially liked the throat slit FX. We dulled the edge of a knife, ran a hidden tube down it, attached the blood pump, and our onscreen killer used it to great success. I'd say that was worth the price alone.
