Set initially in a boarding school devoted to cookery, Run It! is an unusual book. The focus quickly shifts from cookery to relationships.
Our main character, Elena Rose, begins the book as a young student but ends with taking her nephew to the same school. Along the way we see her shifting relationships with family and the developing friendships she chooses.
The opening of the book focusing on the annual competition was interesting. I liked the way Elena and her cousin interacted, but the background adult characters were hard to maintain focus on.
I found the pacing of this book very odd. There were attempts to develop one idea and then we’d move into something else.
This isn’t a book I’d have read if I had not been given the chance to via NetGalley.

RUN It! By Mary Ramsey is the life journey of Elena Rose Nakiri. Elena dreamed of following her father’s footsteps. She made the finals of the Freshman Fall Festival at the Toshaini-Kai Institute, where both her parents were alumni. While she waiting for her turn to compete, Remy Moceanu, her proud father and respected chef, gave her his lucky red bandana. Her overly critical mother, Alicia Nakiri, caused a scene by fighting with her sister Erica, while Elena was on stage. Determined to best her mother’s record, Elena made it to the finals. Alicia reveals Elena’s plans to open a restaurant in California with her cousin Prayikina and boyfriend Jamie. When she says the idea is pathetic, Elena’s heart hardens towards her mother. Before the finals, Elena’s world gets turned upside down. Elena’s tale will make you shed tears of sadness and joy all the way to the end.
