Large Print Edition Corruption. Deception. Greed. Can motherhood get any better? Nine-year-old Pace Morrow pretended it was the happiest day of her life when her mother married the county sheriff. But she knew it wasn't happily ever after. It was another scam.
While her new step-dad runs errands in town, Pace and her twin sister are ripped from their home, chased into the wilderness by a monster neither girl can escape. Their mother. Armed with a manufactured story of horrific abuse, Pace's mother convinces a well-meaning family to take them in. Will they see through the con-artist's tale? Or will Pace and her sister disappear again before their mother's crimes catch up with them?
This is a razor-sharp, heart-pounding thriller! Greene delivers a haunting portrait of childhood resilience as Pace and her twin sister fight to outrun the one person they should have been able to trust. Twisty, emotional, and impossible to shake, this story of manipulation, survival, and the desperate hunt for safety will stay with you long after the final page. A gripping read for fans of dark, character-driven suspense!
What an emotional see saw! This is a story of a dysfunctional woman and her two young twin daughters. Due to the mother's emotional instability the innocent daughters are subjected to emotional and physical abuse as well as an insecure environment. The mother marries the Sheriff but a few months of peaceful bliss shakes awake her need for drama and she stages a scene of abuse by her husband towards the girls and herself. She heads out on foot with the girls and insinuates herself and twins into a nearby family reunion. At first people seem to believe her lies but more of her personality slips out and people begin to have doubts. Caught in an act of abuse to one of the twins the family turns against the woman. In a panic and fury the woman grabs one of the twins, steals a vehicle and the two disappear. This leaves the one child, presumably to be raised by her stepfather, the Sheriff.
Of course, we will not know how this goes, or what becomes of the mother and the other twin until the next installment of this series.
This was an easy read which held my interest. Characters were well developed and there was plenty of action to hold attention all through the installment. I don't usually appreciate having to hunt down another installment to find out what transpires in a story however in this case I just might make the effort.
Find Pace, the prequel to the Pace Morrow Mysteries, is a good beginning to what will surely be a great series. Nine-year-old twin sisters Pace and Patience are always being pulled into their mother’s scams. They must follow the rules that Temperance has laid out for them, otherwise they will be severely punished. After she vandalizes the house she has been living in with Bill, her new husband and local sheriff, she will run to the neighbors. Temperance is already concocting a horrific story of abuse, but the truth will come to light in a violent manner. A very well written story filled with twists and turns and fantastic characters. I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I received this as an ARC. Talk about crazy mothers! Temperance sure lives up to her name. She quick marries a sherriff in anticapating ripping him off. She uses her nine year old twin daughters to make outlandish tales to discredit him. The twins are caught in a tough spot thanks to the mother. Fast paced, twisty, great characters. Once you start reading you get so entangled with the story. Its a good read.
I loved this story. Pace and her sister are torn from their home by their unstable mother. Her new stepfather is accused of abuse. She tries to find help but her mother is running again. This short story packs a punch. I am looking forward to the next installment. I would recommend it. I received an advance copy of this book and this is my honest review.
My first book from this author and I am happy to say I like the style of writing. The plot keeps you engrossed and the characters are easily imaginable. The descriptions of people and places really drag you into the story too. I can’t wait to read more from this author. I received this arc for free from the author and I wanted to leave an honest review.
Wow - what a touching and moving story! It pulled me in from the first page - I just wanted to find out what happened to Pace and her sister. This story is very well-written and you can’t help but love and cheer for Pace. I could feel the mother’s personality coming off the page, whether she was being syrupy sweet or angrily enraged. I am really looking forward to the series!
This took a hold of me from the first page and held on until the last. We hear of scammers and con artists every day but this takes matters to a new level. How a mother can subject and yes, condition her children to these antics, is beyond me. It also upset me to see how quickly Bill's friends were willing to believe Temperence's lies about a man whom most had known since childhood.
This was a distressing story. My heart went out to the young twins Patience and Pace. Their mother was all types of evil. These characters made you feel many emotions. As awful as the story was, the author was very skilled to make you feel so strongly about the characters.
If the other books in this series are anything like this first book, D. K. Greene has got a winner! Find Pace pulled me in on the first page and kept me hanging through the last. The characters are very believable, and the writing is so descriptive I could see what the Sheriff's home looked like when the girls and their mother left. Bring on the next book! I can't wait!!
