This book was nothing like I thought it would be. This book is shelved in the home decor section of the library but isn't really about helping the reader decorate their home. Its filled with trivia and tips about homes. For example, in the bedroom section of this book, it talks about what different cultures used as aphrodisiacs. The trivia is interesting, but is presented in a very rambling way, almost stream-of-consciousness. For me, the authors discussion of the use of herbs in the home was the most interesting part of the book. Finally, the photos are extremely dated. Perhaps current readers could get more out of the book if it had more current photos that more clearly demonstrated specific ideas/concepts the author wants to convey.

This was a truly delightful book that I will dip into again and again for morsels of inspiration. It charmed me with its discussion of ancient traditions from cultures around the world; inspired me to learn the art of pickling, canning, and preserving; enticed me to bring natural objects, scented oils, and flowers and herbs into my kitchen, my bath, and my bedroom. It is sectioned out into small entries so you can read for just a moment or two if that's all the time that you have. I will keep this book handy in my living room and open it whenever I feel in need of some inspiration for bringing "spirit, harmony, and warmth" to my home.
