The Hodges Harbrace Handbook, 2009 MLA Update Edition

Rate this book
Continuously evolving to address the needs of today's students, the HODGES' HARBRACE HANDBOOK, 17th Edition, guides student writers in developing their understanding of the rhetorical situation. This understanding enables even students with minimal experience or confidence in their writing to learn to write more effectively--to choose the most pertinent information, arrange it well, and use the most appropriate language when writing for any audience. This grammar-first handbook provides comprehensive coverage of grammar, style, punctuation, mechanics, writing, and research--all presented in the context of rhetorical concerns including the writer, reader, message, context, and exigence (reason for writing). This edition has been updated to reflect guidelines from the 2009 MLA HANDBOOK FOR WRITERS OF RESEARCH PAPERS, SEVENTH EDITION.

Any serious writer MUST own this priceless book. Hodges' Harbrace Handbook is a perfect gift for students, writers, journalists, researchers, and anyone who likes to argue grammar rules! As a professional writer, editor, and occasional tutor, I find accuracy and peace of mind on every single page. I start every morning with the Holy Bible and the Harbrace Handbook!

Every year through high school I used to ask myself WTH I had to endure this grammar nightmare book. Then through the next six years of college, I thanked the universe endlessly for this great grammatical reference because I don't know how I would have made it without it! Granted, I later had to go on to lear the MLA, AP, Chicago, APA, etc., style guides, but without having had this as a foundation, I think that would have been much more difficult. An invaluable resource and strongly recommended.

When people tell me they are grammar snobs, I ask what edition they own. If you truly are concerned about proper grammar usage, then you would know about this book.

I don't think it's possible to love something so much! I was recommended this (Harbrace College Handbook) book inside of another great book titled Building Great Sentences by Brooks Landon. And because I absolutely loved Landon's work and he just won't shut up about the old faithful, I decided to try it for myself too and guess what I am in love! I am so so grateful for this! This book literally has special blue dialogue boxes and 2 entire chapters for multilingual/ non-native speakers like me! SO SO GRATEFUL!!!
