Rate this book

This brightly illustrated book, the first of the Family of Ree adventures by Scott E. Sutton, introduces readers to the colorful world of Ree. With green trees and blue oceans, Ree looks a little like Earth. However, the sight of the Giant Sea Beasties swimming by the light of one of Ree's two moons, reminds readers that they are a long way from home.Dundee, a white-bearded Wizard, mentors his assistant, Jeeter, a playful Erf."He studies his Wizard lessons everyday,But he loves to surf and takes time to play. When we go on journeys, he's the first out the door. He's a curious Erf, and he loves to explore."Jeeter (along with young readers) learns a valuable lesson about protecting the environment and all the creatures in Sutton's whimsical world. From the Flipping Floating Flying Floojies to the Long-Legged Ploots with very long snoots, from the Bobbing Bungalla Bingallees to the Spotted Tree Gings, Jeeter understands the need to care for every member of the Family of Ree.This book demonstrates the value: "Take care of your environment."

A native Californian, Scott was born in Santa Monica in 1952. He started his career as a commercial artist in 1971. It was during this time that he developed the “Family of Ree” characters.

In 1978 Scott began exhibiting in an art gallery in Laguna Beach, California where he sold paintings of the “Family of Ree” characters. These were so popular, that at the urging of his numerous collectors, Scott wrote and illustrated a series of six books about the World of Ree and its unique inhabitants. The first book, “The Family of Ree” was published in 1985 and is now in its sixth edition.

In addition to the “Family of Ree” series of books, Scott has written and illustrated three other series, “The Kuekumber Kids,” "How to Draw Stuff," and “Adventures of Dinosaur Dog”. He is currently working on the 25th anniversary edition of the "Family of Ree" series.

Since the publishing of his first book, Scott has toured schools, libraries, and bookstores around the United States and has spoken to over 300,000 students and over 10,000 teachers, delivering his “Education Through Imagination” workshops.

A fun book of poetry. The world of Ree has lots of critters, and each page is devoted to a wonderful poem describing the creature coupled with beautiful illustrations.
