The Delta

I really enjoyed this one. I've read the preceding Spider World novels and like the way the story has progressed from book to book. I think Colin Wilson one of thoe authors who is so easy to read and it a real pleasure to relax with his books.
In this novel, Niall and several of his friends travel to a region called The Delta (hence the title) where there has been prolific growth of vegetation and fauna. Their aim is to rid the world of the spiders that rule the world. I don't want to give away any of the plot but Colin Wilson's writing really brings the wildlife of the Delta "alive" and it finally explains how and why the spiders rose to dominance.
The character of Niall is very well presented and the development of his abilities continues in an interesting manner so that we discover them as he does. The other characters are quite well presented.
All in all an excellent read. It really needs to be read in conjunction with the previous books in this series as they are really one continual story.

رائعة ومشوقة لمن يستهويه ادب الخيال العلمي والمستقبل , ولو ان النهاية كانت مفتوحة كان الكاتب اراد اضافة جزء ثالت للسلسلة

الحياة برمتها ماهي سوى خطأ مأساوي، والقوى الخفية، التي تسيطر على مصيرنا، تنظر إلينا بنوع من الازدراء.
فالبشر يعيشون في عالم من الأوهام الحسية، إلا أن عقولهم قادرة، في الوقت ذاته، على التغلغل إلى الواقع الموضوعي الكامن وراء هذه الأوهام.
ومع هذا كله نجد أن الحضارة الإنسانية وصلت إلى درجة الفشل، ﻷن الإنسان نجح في السيطرة على العالم المادي، دون السيطرة على عقله.
ندرك على نحو مفاجئ أن هذه هي المشكلة الأساسية لكل البشر. فبمجرد شعورهم بالضجر، يتركون إرادتهم تنهار.
فما هو الخطأ الذي حدث بالنسبة لتطور الإنسان؟ لقد جعلته ملايين السنين من الصراع، متخصصاً في فن البقاء على قيد الحياة. واتخذ تطوره مساراً منحدراً، متسماً بالعِرض. ثم لماذا أصيب بالإحباط والاستياء، ولماذا يبدو البشر عاجزين عن تحقيق السعادة الحقيقية؟
تبدو الإجابة واضحة إلى حد ما: فقد كان الإنسان عاجزاً عن تقدير قيمة الحياة، بدون مشاكل. ومع هذا فإننا نجد الإجابة غير منطقية، إذ أن الإنسان استحدث الحضار لحل مشاكله: مشكلة الغذاء، مشكلة الأمن، ومشكلة سلام العقل. إذن لماذا شعر بالضجر والاستياء، بعد أن توصل إلى حلول لها..؟
نجد أن الإجابة عن هذا السؤال وهو لماذا دأب الإنسان دائماً على الشعور بالاستياء من حياته؟ هي: ﻷن كل إنسان يحتضن داخل نفسه الطاقة التي تسمو على الحاضر، وتهيمن على كيانه الداخلي.
كان الإنسان معداً ﻷن يكون سيد هذه الممكلة الذهنية، وليس منفياً، يائساً، محاصراً في الحاضر، دائم التغير. وﻷن كل البشر ولدوا بهذه المعرفة الغريزية، فإن أحداً لم يشعر بالرضا تجاه اللحظة الراهنة، مهما تمكنت من تلبية رغباته.
يجب أن لا ننسى أنه من الممكن أن تنخدع الحواس بسهولة، وأن يتحول العالم الواقعي، إلى عالم خيالي مزيف، فالحواس لا يمكن الثقة بها بشكل مطلق.
فمن السهل التحكم في الإنسان من خلال عواطفه وتوقه إلى الأمن، ومن خلال دفعه إلى حافة اليأس، فاليأس ماهو إلا نوع من الخطأ وحالة مؤقتة من الإحباط.
و المنظور الإنساني العادي هو شكل من أشكال العمى.
ولكن الإرادة من جهة أخرى، في الشيء الوحيد لدى الإنسان الذي لايمكن تحطيمه أو السيطرة عليه. فالأجابة تكمن في رفض الاستسلام، ففي الوقت الذي تظل فيه الإرادة صلبة يبقى الذهن حصناً منيعاً لا يمكن أن يغزوه أحد. والأمل يكمن في القوة الذهنية الغريبة هذه تجاه العالم الخارجي، إنها القوة التي لم يستطع الذهن نفسه فهمهما.
عليكم أن تعرفوا أن رغبة الإنسان في المعرفة قوية قوة شهيته للطعام. إن أعمق وأقوى رغباته هي أن يكون حراً في استخدام عقله ﻷنه يعرف بصورة غريزية أن مصدر القوة هو الذهن، وأنه يجب أن يتعلم اكتشاف إمكاناته.
البشر لا يريدون قدراً كبيراً من الحرية، فذلك يجعلهم يشعرون بالاضطراب. فالبشر لا يعرفون طريقة استغلال حريتهم، ولكن هذا يرجع ﻷنهم لا يجيدون اسخدام عقولهم. فحين يصبحون أحراراً يشعرون بالسأم ويبحثون حولهم عن شيء يفعلونه.
والسأم قد يخنق الإنسان حتى الموت، ولكن نجد أنه ينتعش من جديد في لحظة واحدة بمجرد أن يتلقى كلمة تشجيع.
يبقى السؤال هل سينجح البشر في حل مشكلات الطبيعة البشرية المستعصية التي جعلت تاريخ الإنسان عبارة عن سجل من الوحشية والحماقة، مثير للإحباط؟
هل سيتعلمون يوماً ما بعد كل هذه المصاعب التي واجهتهم استغلال العقل وإيقاظه ومنعه من النوم مرة أخرى؟
ندرك الآن أن هذه كانت مشكلة البشر الأساسية. فحين واجهوا المخاطر والصعوبات تعلموا القتال على نحو رائع، ولكن بمجرد أن انتصروا فقدوا كل الأرض التي حصلوا عليها وغرقوا في الكسل وأصبحوا ضحايا للتفاهة. وبدوا عاجزين عن الحفاظ على الشعور بالإلحاح. وكأن الجميع مصابون بداء النوم. ولو أن بشر "الأرض الجديدة" قد حلّوا هذه المشكلة لكانوا أقرب للآلهة منهم للبشر.

I know it says "spider world 2", but I'm considering this to be volume 4. There is some confusion because the part of the story that comes before this has been published as 3 short books and also as one single book.
This doesn't lend itself to a quick summary as well as the earlier books. If you compare the Spider World series to the Harry Potter series, this is like Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire where it's a longer book and it's also the book where it transitions from a juvenile or young adult to more of an adult story.
Niall and his human followers have got ahold of some extremely powerful weapons which have greatly complicated the relations between the bombardier beetles and the spiders. The recent enhancements to Nialls consciousness make him aware of a mysterious life force and the crew debarks to track it to its source in the Delta, which is considered to be a highly dangerous place.
I don't want to reveal too much about what they discover, but there's a bunch of backstory which explains some things about humanity's enslaved condition under the giant, telepathic bugs.
With a larger number of pages at his disposal, the author airs his pet theories about the infinite potential of the human mind and such and the story turns into an Author Tract at times. The mental powers such as telepathy and clairvoyance don't seem that out of place in SF (look at Zenna Henderson's The People, for example), but I think the author really believes in this stuff.
This is now getting recognizable as a story by the guy who wrote The Philosopher's Stone.

pretty good, not gonna lie, and still kept me hooked but at times I wished there was less descriptive stuff going on, started feeling boring in certain spots
plotwise, t'was a masterpiece just like the rest of the series, can't wait to see how this all ends

The second in this series is just as phenomenal as the first.
Niall’s journey of existentialism continues as he tries to destroy the spiders. In doing so, I think he discovers more than he could have thought was possible.

if you made it through 'the tower' then you really should read this for closure if not I wouldn't bother with this. the Delta mentioned in the title is an interesting and deadly place. the hippy ideology from the first book continues and Wilson tries to root it in to some kind of scientific basis but fails. I am not convinced the proposed solution actually changes anything. easy to read but poor story line and a bit preachy.

While I was not that impressed with the first 3 novels in the spider world series, this is where things finally started to get interesting. The Delta is a deadly and fascinating place and the main character finally starts to do something with his gifts.
