A Japanese-Canadian born in BC, Nina has always loved fantasy, science fiction, comics, Japanese art, and, of course, The Simpsons. Over the last decade, she’s spent much of her time drawing things and telling stories.
In 2007 she uploaded a manga-style remix image of the Simpsons entitled “The Simpsonzu,” not expecting anything special. It became an overnight success. The appearance of “The Simpsonzu” on deviantART‘s front page caught the attention of the news aggregator Digg and the picture’s appearance on Digg caught the attention of everyone else. Suddenly she was being featured in numerous newspapers and magazines from all over the world and within a week, she got a call from Bongo Comics. They had a manga-style Simpsons story written and wanted her to draw it.
Nina is still drawing Simpsons regularly for Bongo, and her Death Note parody “Murder She Wrote” (from Simpsons Treehouse of Horror #14), received an Eisner Award for “Best Short Story,” one of the most acclaimed award in comics. In addition, she created the graphic novel Yokaiden for Del Rey Manga, illustrated The Last Airbender Prequel: Zuko’s Story, and regularly designs for video game apparel companies like Fangamer, The Yetee, and Meat Bun.

I really enjoyed this Manga, the adventures of a young boy as he ventures into the world of the Yokai (world of Japanese spirits) to avenge the death of his grandmother.
Unfortunately from what I understand the series has been cancelled with this book.

Sadly #3 has never been published it seems..
I really NEED the rest of this story! 😭
Definitely worth a read-- even if it ends on a cliffhanger that never got answered by the rest of the story. Hopefully this will be the first of many volumes of manga read this year.

Well, I can guess from the book details the reason this was $5! This is the second book of two, and forever incomplete, so it's almost not worth bothering to read (if you hate unresolvable cliffhangers like I do).
The art is manga-fashioned, and the style brings to mind a number of young artists' first attempts at making graphic novels. Not to say that it's a BAD style so much as it feels rougher, less polished than the work of an artist who has drawn for over a decade, say.
So it sucks that FIFTEEN YEARS LATER, there's still no conclusion or even continuation of this! Matsumoto even says, "I held off on showing too much of Kyūmon*, 'cause I wanted to save that for the third book." SIGH.
The actual story is a little bit "stock" to me: orphaned boy (Hamachi) finds his grandmother has been killed by a yōkai* and seeks revenge on it, but on the way he gets in a side quest from a nine-tailed fox spirit (kitsuné*) to find three objects that have allegedly been taken from her (though they haven't been—she's just scamming to get nice trinkets). It's actually easy to pick up despite missing the first book, because the recap at the beginning is simple enough to catch up newcomers. It's just unfortunate that it ends so abruptly!
Not exactly recommended, due to incompleteness, but taken in and of itself without consideration of its lack of successors, it's a decent read.
*I'm preserving the romanisation from the book, but I would spell these Kyuumon, youkai, and kitsune myself.

Quite a quick read (it is basically a comic book) also has some humor as the first book did. I like the drawings and leaning about some Japanese mythical/legendary characters. I will likely look for book 3 when it comes out. As in book 1, this manga reads as in other books in English, front to back.

Fun, quirky, and cute. A boy travels into the realm of the yokai (Japanese folklore creatures) in pursuit of a yokai he belives killed his grandmother. Lots of short quest-based adventures, all building up his experience in the yokai realm. Well done.

Loved this series bit the author isn't going to finish the series. She is going to leave it unfinished, just leave her fans hanging. It's too bad because it's a great story just no ending.

Soo much fun to read. I was so excited to see vol2 out. When I brought it home, I carried it around like a kid carries a stuff animal around. Now I am just dying for volume 3.

It’s truly a great tragedy that we will probably never see Vol 3; this series had such great potential, and Hamachi’s antics always kept me on my toes.

Reason for Reading: Next in the series.
I just loved this second installment of Yokaiden. Even better than the first, I think. The plot is pretty simple, your basic fantasy quest. Hamachi set out alone on his hunt for the kappa he believes may have killed his grandmother, but has picked up two travelling companions along the way, both yokai: a paper lantern and an umbrella who have complete opposite personalities and are adorable characters. Along his journey they meet other yokai, some troublesome, some helpful, some dangerous, whom they must deal with. There is a side quest in this book as Hamachi heads for the ninetailed fox who is all knowing and can tell him where the kappa can be found. She will give him the answer he seeks if he brings her three items she has lost first. The yokai we meet in this book are fabulous. I really enjoyed meeting them, some were cute and funny. One was very dangerous and I was thrilled that I had already read about her, the slit-mouthed woman. She's appeared in another manga series I've read, though I couldn't tell you which one, but to think I've now read enough fantasy manga that I'm starting to become familiar with Japanese folklore is exciting! Loved the book, love the series. Too bad it got cancelled due to publishing whims and I hope the author finds a way to continue the story and bring it to print format. I'd pre-order vol. 3 in a heartbeat!

I was so thoroughly surprised when I read this manga, I was pretty iffy about it, was on the fence about the art and while supernatural is one of my favorite genres, I just wasn't too excited about the plot from the synopsis on the back cover, but to my delight, I found myself totally loving it. It's hysterical. The dialouge is awesome and had me in stitches. The art grew on me as did the characters, Hamachi charmed me with his quirky ways. I got thoroughly into it and only after I had finished the second volume did I discover, to my horror, that it's unfinished. What a let-down. One of the thing's I hate most about series and unfortunately almost makes me wish I hadn't read it to begin with. BUT! /this/ series is too good to miss out on, so even if the third volume never makes an appearance, I still recommend it. :)

1. Okay, usually I balk at the "Perform these three tasks" storyline that's been popping up way too often for my liking (do I sound like an expert? Because guess what? I am very far from that.), but Matsumoto manages to actually incorporate plot along with the tasks (too often these three tasks have NOTHING to do with anything else in the story ... still not an expert on this. Please do not be fooled.).
2. Again (like in the first volume), there were some laugh out loud moments. This always pleases me. ALWAYS.
3. OH FUCK HAMACHI GOT HURT

As well as being an exceptional artist, matstumoto's strength lies in her storytelling-simple yet intriguing. I loved all the subtle Beck references, too.

I own both the first and second manga to this series. I love the artwork. I wish Nina Matsumoto would continue the series. This book is as accurate and entertaining as the first manga.

Just like the other volume i liked this story aswell, but the only downside about the series is there is no ending. Since this volume is the last one to come out and vol. 3 haven's come out yet.
