Friend of Pixie (F.O.P.)
Such a sweet story. A family is surprised by lots of early snow, leaving them with neither potatoes nor apples for Hanukkah latkes. Nevermind, they still have each other and their health. But as the nights wear on and there is less and less food, they begin to worry. One night, a kitten arrives and though they are barely feeding themselves, they decide to rescue and keep it. The next night, a skinny puppy shows up. Oh, Logan really loved this story! Warm, soft illustrations and gentle lessons ab ...more

Students in our predominantly Gentile elementary school enjoy listening to this heartwarming tale of a poor Eastern European Jewish family near the city of Minsk celebrating Hanukkah during a winter blizzard. “Latkes and Applesauce” is the story of a family that is stuck home with a blizzard that covers all the apples and potatoes, thus making the traditional Hanukkah latkes and applesauce impossible. But as the Menashe family takes in some surprising strangers, the feast becomes a possibility once again.

When a snowstorm arrives on the first night of Hanakkah and buries all the potatoes a family has to celebrate without lakes. When it snows for the next six nights the family is left with only crumbs to eat. When the snow finally ends, a dog and kitten provide the Hanukkah miracle that gives the family not only latkes but applesauce as well.

This story is very sweet, and teaches about Hanukkah. I really liked how the animals in the story end up saving hanukkah for the family (shows that by being kind, good things can happen). I really liked how there were recipes at the end of the book for Hanukkah dishes!

Very sweet Chanukah story that doesn't rehash the Maccabee history like so many others. I liked this one a lot.
