Just to point out that there is in fact nothing inherently problematic or wrong with reinterpreting and analysing classic works of children's fiction with regard to modern sensibilities, with regard to keeping in mind contemporary social and philosophical questions (as long as at least in my humble opinion one still remains true to the narrative of the text being considered, as long as one is not inserting into said text that which is not present in the original author's printed words).

Wonderful collection of essays! It made me think of Anne in many ways I had never considered before. A great read for any Anne fans.

This made the English major nerd in me so happy. A fascinating set of essays looking at Anne through a more global perspective. All the usual Montgomery scholars are present and accounted for. I particularly enjoyed the essay on the novel and space; how the story of Anne interacts with today's Cavendish, to both positive and negative effect. ...more

It was a couple of years ago that I finally read Anne of Green Gables. I was interested in understanding what it was about this character that young girls adored, and at 21 years old Anne Shirley had captured my heart.
