We Play on a Rainy Day (Contemporary Realistic Fiction)
This is a Scholastic Hello Reader! book. This is written for preschool to grade 1 readers. It is illustrated with bright colors depicting the clothes on the many children who are distressed and begin to pout when the dark storm clouds come and the rain brings them inside. The children find that with the proper rain gear, it can be just as fun to play on a rainy day than as a clear one.
As a child, I loved to play in the rain and make mud pies with the newly washed dirt. I was lucky enough to have a mother who allowed me to get dirty, many children are afraid to get messy today. This book not only shows that a little 'dirt don't hurt' but that it can actually be a great way to explore the world around us.
I would pull this and other weather related items out in the classroom to allow children to explore and discuss their favorite weather related activities. We could then create a T-chart and list the different activities that can be done in two different types of weather. Ex: sunny day vs. rainy day; or snowy day vs. heat wave!
A group of children are having fun outside when it starts to rain. But once they put on their rain clothes, they discover that a rainy day can be lots of fun.
