Though it has many of the ingredients of a thriller - mysterious characters, atmospheric locations, Police investigation, etc. - this little book lacks the pace to fit that genre. Instead it's a deep and thoughtful look at the development of a man's character under pressure.

Diego is struggling to cope with having a handicapped son, struggling with his own feelings about him, when he meets Walid, a person whom he knows very little about except that he also has a handicapped son. The unlikely fri

This is an intense look at the inner life of a father with a sick child. De Cataldo sets up a comparison between the foreignness of a second father who also has a sick child but is from another culture, and the rest of the "healthy" world. As a spy story it's not particularly good, but as a story about fatherhood and the emotional confusion of illness it seems very good, at least to this non-parent. I will be interested to revisit it in the future.
