Ancient and Modern Principles

I have read and reviewed a fair number of metaphysical and occult books by this author. I find I tend to view them in extremes: either I thoroughly enjoy them or I find them an odd mishmash of ideas. Unfortunately, this is one of the latter. Hermeticism has deep and ancient roots, yet the way it is presented in this book comes across as a mash-up between those ancient principles and modern self-help and metaphysical concepts. The first couple of chapters of this book read like someone's research paper on the history of hermeticism. The author throws around a lot of metaphysical and occult terms, and if you aren't already well read in these very broad topics, some of what the author stated would be very hard to follow. The author had proclaimed in the introduction that this would be a very hands-on book, so I was hoping the chapters on the seven principles of hermeticism would be just that. But I did not find them to be so. Instead, as I stated above, the author’s supposed deep dives into the major tenets of hermeticism seemed to reflect more modern paganism and self-help than the ancient principles. While some chapters did have some hands-on ways you could apply the principles to your life, not all did. If you are familiar with the principles of hermeticism, you will know that some definitely resonate with modern times while some seem antiquated and perhaps best left in the dustbin of history, like the seventh principle of masculine and feminine. Because this book is at turns dry as charred bone and an overly modern mishmash of self-help and occult ideas, I do not feel like I can recommend it.

I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.

Beautiful

Unexpectedly concise easy to understand and beautifully written. Probably (for me anyway) the best LOA book I've read and wasn't even reading it for that. Serendipitous.
