Dr. Coca's dramatic findings are based on a simple, easily-proven Your pulse rate is accelerated by the foods and substances to which you are allergic. By taking the absolutely safe and harmless pulse test pioneered by Dr. Coca, you may learn the principal cause or causes of your ailments--and then eliminate them.
Dr Coca developed this test in the 1930s and 1940s after his ill wife told him that her heart beat much faster than usual after eating certain foods.
The basic test protocol is for a person to take their pulse, eat a suspect food, and then take their pulse again immediately after, and at 30 minute intervals for a few hours. If the pulse speeds up 6 beats or more, you many have an allergy to that particular food.
Of course there is a bit more to it, as this book explains.
This book explains that the best way to determine your allergic foods is to retest them enough times that you are sure the pulse reaction isn't a coincidence and due to something else, includes information about the foods which most often cause delayed food allergies, how to determine your usual pulse range, and how to do an elimination diet so you can more easily isolate your food allergies.
The information in this book is accurate and worth considering. I am convinced of this fact because of the number of times I have seen Dr Coca and his work on pulse changes and allergens quoted and referenced in many very high quality health books, and because of the quality of this book and the obvious scientific integrity of its author, plus the fact that for many years I have known that a racing pulse after eating something is a sure sign I am allergic to it! I'm also aware of other patients that have used this method with success.
(I also have a disease called M.E. which involves pulse changes in response to bodily exertion as a major feature, and so understanding this concept in relation to allergies wasn't at all a huge stretch!)
While we do have ELISA tests and so on now, these only ever provide part of the solution as no test tests for all types of reactions to a food, as far as I am aware. So I'm using ELISA testing in combination with the pulse test currently and slowly working out my full list of food allergens. While the more severe and obvious ones are easy to find, many are far more subtle and difficult to identify.
There are many books on this topic that contain very similar medical information or that even contain a lot of extra information about modern tests, so perhaps this isn't the best book on identifying allergies for everyone, but I did enjoy reading about this pulse test protocol from the brilliant man who actually came up with it.
This is quite an old book but I found that the author's passion for the subject shone through each page and made the text very engaging.
Thank you Dr Coca for your pioneering work!
Jodi Bassett, The Hummingbirds' Foundation for Myalgic Encephalomyelitis
Author: Dr. Arthur R. Coca .... (Read in 1999) The information in this small book can change your life! It saved mine.
At a loss to figure out why I was so ill, my doctor recommended I use the information in this book to determine if food allergies might be the source of my health problems (daily migraine, violent coughing fits lasting 8+ hours, chronic fatique, severe depression, sinus problems, memory loss, confusion, disorientation, insomnia... and the list went on and on...and on). The migraine had begun some 30 years earlier, and things had progressed from there with the list of symtpms growing yearly. I had not a clue as to their source, even though I searched constantly for answers. I had even done the routines with allergists, but got no answers or direction. I was prescribed lots of meds, tho'.
I read this little book; it made perfect sense. A high pulse rate indicates the body is in reaction to exposure to some "allergen" or is sensitive to some substance. On day three or four of my test (simply checking my pulse numerous times a day), I developed a very high pulse in the morning (signaling trouble), but I had not eaten a single thing since the night before. However, I HAD cleaned the bathrooms, using my usual cleaning products which contained chemicals and chemical fragrance. It didn't take long to make the connection!! We had stumbled upon a welcomed shortcut to diagnosing my intolerance to chemicals.
**After 30+ years, I had an answer!** This book, written in the 50's, focuses on food allergies, but also had some information about how chemicals affect living things, since chemicals were just becoming prevalent in our world beginning after WWII. _The Pulse Test_ told the tale, and I was diagnosed with Multiple Chemical Sensitivity -- later labeled Environmental Illness (which encompasses many different conditions). The label didn't matter: I simply had to avoid chemicals. (Actually, not so simple.)
That was 4 years ago, and my life has changed dramatically, needless to say. Having this book probably saved me years of tests and evaluation -- except that I would not have lasted long enough or had the energy to go through all that. Most doctors, especially back then, scoffed at this diagnosis.
Yes, most doctors will scoff at what Dr. Coca has written here, but you don't need a doctor to simply check your pulse and discover what might be the source of your symptoms.
This book has been very helpful for some of my friends but not so much for me. I do think everyone should read it to be aware of this as most people are NOT and even most doctors. I have expensive blood tests every few years to determine my food allergies and how they have changed. But if you want to save money try this.
My mother's book; I'm sure she put it down the second she read that she'd have to quit smoking. It could have drastically improved the quality of her last 15 years of life...and she wouldn't have died this year. I believe it will be a valuable tool for my family. Requires a bit of effort, but for a few more quality years of life with my loved ones...why the heck not?!
(and to all the smokers out there...only 75% have to quit to make this work; 25% of you can smoke to your heart's content, with no ill effects (per Dr. Coca)...so don't let that be the only reason not to read/try it)
Do yourself a huge favor & read this important book. The Pulse Test is written in an easy to understand style for medical & non-medical professionals. The implementation of the pulse test to determine food allergies may help thousands of people live healthier lives by improving their nutrition. I highly recommend this book.
