A really fantastic and thorough introduction to Islam, covering many aspects from history to philosophy to mysticism. Would recommend for anyone wanting to learn about Islam.

Well balanced intro to this topic by New Zealand academic, William Shepard. It manages to convey a lot of complexity in a highly accessible way - a good skill for a writer to have. (I read the recent 2nd edition.)
