Presley began his career as one of the first performers of rockabilly, an uptempo fusion of country and rhythm and blues with a strong back beat. In 2017, the fortieth year since Elvis Presley's sudden passing, two illustrators each released a picture book version of the Elvis song "Love Me Tender" from the 1956 movie of the same name. In this version, illustrator Tom Browning frames the lyrics not as a romantic love song, but one of a father's devotion.
"Love me tender,
love me sweet;
Never let me go.
You have made my life complete,
And I love you so."
Sons and daughters need their dads equally, though in different ways. Sitting outdoors and communing with nature, learning to ride a bike, reading a book together, or celebrating a birthday with cake and presents are all occasions made better by a father's presence and unconditional love. Through activities practical or whimsical, and all seasons of the year, a consistent loving relationship keeps the child's feet on the ground so he or she is confident venturing out and discovering life.

All my dreams fulfill.
For, my darlin', I love you,
And I always will."
Love is best conveyed through actions. It's more important to behave in loving ways than express lovely sentiments, but when carefully crafted words support one's actions to affirm love, they are a blessing. The recipient of eloquently declared love has those words as reminder of precisely what they mean to that person. It's a gift from the heart and mind, and "Love Me Tender" is a shining example.

Beautiful illustrations of love between a parent & child with the lyrics of one of my favorite Elvis songs.

Through fabulous paintings of a father and his little daughter, this book is a depiction of Elvis Presley's hit song Love Me Tender. Included with this book is a CD of Elvis singing Love Me Tender. If the reader knows the song it is easy to sing through the story as no words other than the song tell the story.

I really enjoyed the illustrations in this book. The book itself goes along word for word with the song, but the pictures is what really made the book successful. I would recommend this book to others.

Beautiful illustrations turn this song into an ode to parenthood and the love between a father and daughter rather than a romance. I have no idea how I'd use it in a group setting, but if you're a fan of Elvis, you might enjoy reading it to your kids.

January 23, 2009After dinner at the Third Street Cafe, we had lots of questions about Elvis: Why is there a scary Elvis mannequin in the restaurant? Why do the Elvi run in the mini-marathon every year? What do you mean he died in the 70s? Why do people still love him? Can we go to his house?
We looked for a biography, but only came up with this sappy picture book. Even so, the girls are hooked. I catch Nina singing Love Me Tender almost daily. I predict a roadtrip to Graceland in our future.

Nice to teach mood and tone. Play the song without the book. Then replay the song with the book and watch kids' faces change--it's amazing!
