My 4-year-old eats pancakes for breakfast 100% of the time, so needless to say he was pretty geeked when a book came in the mail with a pancake as the protagonist. Although he's younger than the recommend age group, he was riveted during the entire read. The illustrations are eye-catching, colorful, and friendly. There is just enough kid-friendly interpersonal conflict and "peril" to keep interest high while teaching a valuable lesson about the common stuff we're all made of. My boy shrieked, "Let's read it again!" the moment it was finished, so that pretty much sums it up. Also, it made me hanker for breakfast food something fierce. The end.

I read Pancake Jake and Wally Waffle with my 6 year old and he loved it. He’s a big fan of breakfast foods so I think the cover alone sold him. The images were bright and engaging. The story follows a pancake who discovers his origins and wants to know what makes a waffle. He meets a waffle and wants to befriend him. A classic tale of growing up on opposite sides of the river.
It got us talking about what makes up a person, and engaged us in a more meaningful conversation and reflection about the ending of the book.

As a retired pre-school and elementary teacher, this delightful children's book will definitely be one of the "must read" books I recommend to my teacher friends. The beautiful illustrations are just right to catch the young reader's attention. The story is one of courage and friendship. The message that we are all the same is one that every child needs to hear.
