When Laura Principal rings the bell at theatrical producer Thomas Butler's London mansion, a young maid opens the door. And suddenly, Laura is plunged into a mystery whose depths she fears to plumb.
The maid asks Laura to help her find some missing money, but overnight she disappears. Neighbors say she was abducted; the Butlers insist no such person ever existed. But beneath the vicious underpinnings of affluence—in clubs, country houses, and charming mews—Laura uncovers the unbelievable truth. Proving it, though, could be fatal.
Michelle Spring was raised on Vancouver Island. She worked for many years as an academic in Cambridge where she lives with her husband and their two children. She has written several academic books and five Laura Principal thrillers.
Quite decent storyline but unfortunately written in a poor way. I couldn't make myself like either characters nor the plot. At the beginning after reading the summary I thought it would be likable book, but I was mistaken. I was seriously considering dumping it, but somehow I made it through and finished. I wanted to give it only 1 star but after some consideration I give 2 stars because the story is promising, just the realization seemed in my opinion dull.
A good read that makes me want to read others of Spring's books. I learned a lot of facts about English laws concerning wealthy people immigrating to England and bringing their servants with them. I enjoyed Laura our PI who has an interesting life seems to be a good detective yet had some major flaws. She is quite shallow as a person and doesn't seem to be too concerned with the dates of those who seem to Love her. I tend to like my main characters who have some flaws. I can identify with that.
This is the 2nd in a series featuring PI Laura Principal. This time we find Laura busy trying to juggle several cases & she accidentally leaves an important photograph with a clients housekeeper. On her return the housekeeper has vanished & the client denies she was ever there so it seems Laura’s photo is lost forever. This means on top of her other cases Laura decides to try to find the missing girl
