The climax of the novel is when she ends up in Jerusalem during the Roman siege and subsequent destruction of the city in 70 A.D.

About the author

Sir Henry Rider Haggard, KBE was an English writer of adventure novels set in exotic locations, predominantly Africa, and the creator of the Lost World literary genre. His stories, situated at the lighter end of the scale of Victorian literature, continue to be popular and influential. He was also involved in agricultural reform and improvement in the British Empire.

His breakout novel was King Solomon's Mines (1885), which was to be the first in a series telling of the multitudinous adventures of its protagonist, Allan Quatermain.

Haggard was made a Knight Bachelor in 1912 and a Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1919. He stood unsuccessfully for Parliament as a Conservative candidate for the Eastern division of Norfolk in 1895. The locality of Rider, British Columbia, was named in his memory.

বইটা চমৎকার। সেই সঙ্গে নিজের অনূদিত প্রথম পূর্ণাঙ্গ বই বলে এর প্রতি দুর্বলতাও একটু বেশি। যারা পড়েননি, তাঁদেরকে পড়ে দেখার অনুরোধ রইল।

খ্রিস্টধর্মের উত্থানের সময়, চলছে ইহুদি আর রোমানদের যুদ্ধ। আর যুদ্ধ চলছে ক্যালেব আর মারকাসের মাঝেও। এ গল্পের প্রধান চরিত্র নাম যার পার্ল মেইডেন অর্থাৎ মুক্তা কুমারী, যার ব্যাকগ্রাউন্ডে বেজে চলেছে মিষ্টি মেয়ে শাবনূরের একটি গান- "বিধি তুমি বলে দাও আমি কার!?" ইয়েস! দুটি মানুষ একটি মনের দাবিদার। তবে বিধি নয় মুক্তা কুমারী মিরিয়ামের মা-ই বলে দিয়ে গেছেন তার মেয়ে জামাই কেমন হবে- তাকে হতে হবে খ্রিস্টান। আর ক্যালেব-মারকাসের কেউই খ্রিস্টান নয়।
তাহলে কে পেল মিরিয়ামকে?-.-

কিডিং এসাইড, দারুন ছিল পার্লমেইডেন! যেমন গল্প, তেমন ঝরঝরে অনুবাদ!

দীর্ঘ উপন্যাস!
দু হাজার বছর পূর্বে মাত্র খ্রিস্টধর্মের শুরু, রোমান আর ইহুদীদের যুদ্ধ, চারিদিকে হত্যা,খুন,রক্তারক্তি,আর এক অসহায় অবস্থা! এমন সময়েই মিরিয়ামের জন্ম,তার বেড়ে উঠার চারপাশে এই প্রতিকূল সময়ের নিখুঁত বর্ণনা।
বহুবার জীবনের ঝুঁকি এসেছে,তবুও সত্য ও ন্যায়ের পথ থেকে অবিচল নয়।
এসেনিতে মিরিয়ামের প্রথম ১৮ বছর বড় হওয়া, এরপর টায়ার থেকে জেরুজালেমে আসা এক যুদ্ধাবস্থা ক্রান্তিলগ্নের সময়ে।
মিরিয়ামকে ভালোবাসে দুজন; মারকাস আর ক্যালেব!কতো ত্যাগ তিতিক্ষা দুজনেরই!

প্রায় ৪০০ পৃষ্ঠার অসাধারণ একটা বই ছিলো। মিরিয়ামকে ভুলতে পারবোনা।

I found this story, intriguing and exciting. There were a couple of minor details that bugged me, (Similar to my opinion on Haggard's book, The Brethren), like, for example, making Christianity look somewhat Catholic.
Regardless, this book is recommended for those looking for an exciting historical-fiction read.

13+ for violence.

This story has intrigued me since I first read it at the young age of 12. I was young to read it, but it drew me in even then. I now credit my love for historical-fiction with this book.

I love the historical accuracy of this book! From the Jewish faith to the order of Essenes to the Romans, everything is superbly well-written, detailed, and accurate. I learned so much, particularly about the Essenes and the real nature of Titus.

I related very well with Miriam. Her love for a Roman officer, yet steadfast desire to obey her dead mother and the commands of her own faith in not marrying a pagan aroused much sympathy. I loved her bravery, her spirit, her sweetness, her strength.

Marcus and Caleb were equally wonderful characters. Though one is a protagonist, the other the antagonist, they were both easy to relate to and very deep characters. What's not to like in a dashing, handsome Roman officer and a cunning, spirited Jewish warrior?

If you want to be immersed in the Jewish, Christian, and Roman culture and learn about the fall of the temple, read this book! If you want a good romance with a ton of edge-of-your-seat excitement, read this book! It contains everything - danger, romance, battles, slave auctions, faith, redemption, betrayal, and heart-thumping action!

The only downside I had with it was the *spoiler* kiss Miriam and Marcus share. In that era, kissing ended one's virginity, so it seemed both inappropriate and uncharacteristic of Miriam.

Recommended for all history buffs, romance lovers, and historical fiction fans!

This was such a sweet and captivating story told with a real sense of the biblical times! I don't know why there's not a movie of Pearl Maiden!?! Miriam is so sweet and her faith is inspiring; Marcus and Caleb were both intriguing characters; and best of all: the ending was satisfactory!

OK, this one is ... tricky.

As per the title, this is one of Haggard's historicals, in this case set in Jerusalem and nearby areas in the first century A.D. We begin with one Rachel, a Jewess[sic], imprisoned with a number of other Jews (well, sort of), including her body servant Nehushta, and about to be fed to the lions in the arena in Caesarea.

The plot thickens because a) many of these Jews are, in fact, followers of a new, much disfavored sect called "Christians" and because b) Rachel is a pregnant widow, her husband having previously met his end in the arena.

Happily, before the whole lion plan can be implemented, Agrippa clutches his chest and keels over and the prisoners in the arena manage to escape in the confusion, so that Rachel can give birth to a daughter, Miriam (the eponymous Pearl-Maiden and the actual main character of the book) before herself snuffing it.

We then follow Miriam as she's raised by a sect of Essenes on the Dead Sea and, when she approaches adulthood, attracts the attentions of both a Jewish zealot (Caleb) and a Roman officer (Marcus), neither of whom are entirely suitable marriage prospects, not least because Miriam's mother left strict instructions that Miriam should only marry another Christian.

And then comes a whole bunch of the course of true love never running smooth, and various adventures and escapades culminating ultimately in the fall of Jerusalem at the hands of the Romans, before (spoiler for a 120 year old book) one of those would-be suitors sees the light and converts, thus allowing for a happy ending.

And it's Haggard so the historical scenes are reasonably well-drawn (if somewhat out of date based on contemporary scholarship) and the adventures are suitably exciting, but where the situation starts to become complicated is his ... less than flattering portrayal of those Jews who did not happen to convert to this minor, heretical sect established in the name of an executed would-be prophet and revolutionary. And it's nothing really horrible necessarily, but it does make the book harder to recommend than it might be otherwise, despite the relatively high rating.

স্যার হ্যাগার্ড অসম্ভব পছন্দের একজন লেখক হলেও একটা সময় একটানা তাঁর অনেকগুলো বই পড়ার পর একঘেয়েমী এসে গিয়েছিল। ফলশ্রুতিতে অপরিকল্পিত লম্বা বিরতি। নতুন করে আবার শুরু করার জন্য যে বইটা বেছে নিলাম সেটা অনেকদিন থেকেই টু রিড লিস্টে ছিল। ইনফ্যাক্ট, বেশ কয়েক বছর আগে বইটি যখন প্রকাশিত হয় তখনই এর দৃষ্টিনন্দন প্রচ্ছদ আগ্রহে বাড়তি মাত্রা যোগ করেছিল। পরিত্যক্ত কোন এক রোমান নগরীর বিরান রাস্তায় একজন রুপবতী তরুণী বিষন্ন ভঙ্গিতে দাঁড়িয়ে আছে। হাতে সুতীক্ষ্ণ ছোঁরা, রাস্তার অংশবিশেষ রক্তেভেজা।
গল্প শুরু হয় সিরীয় উপকুলবর্তী নগরী সিজারিয়ায়, যেখানে রোমানদের আশীর্বাদে রাজা এগ্রিপার প্যালেস্টাইনের সিংহাসনে বসা উপলক্ষে উৎসব চলছে। উৎসবের অংশ হিসেবে পঞ্চাশ ষাটজন খ্রিস্টানকে বন্দী করে রাখা হয়েছে, ইহুদীদের খুশি করতে যাদের পরদিন সিংহের মুখে তুলে দেয়া হবে। বন্দীদের মধ্যে আছে প্রভাবশালী সম্ভ্রান্ত ইহুদী ব্যবসায়ী বেনোনির একমাত্র কন্যা র‍্যাশেল, ধর্মান্তরিত হবার অপরাধে যাকে নিজের পিতাই স্বামীসহ তুলে দিয়েছিলেন মৃত্যুর মুখে। স্বামী ডিমাস অ্যাম্ফিথিয়েটারে খুন হয়ে গেলেও ভাগ্য বোধহয় অন্যকিছুই লিখে রেখেছিল গর্ভবতী র‍্যাশেলের জন্য।
যা হোক, নাটকীয় ঘটনার মধ্য দিয়ে কাহিনী এগোতে থাকে। গল্পে একে একে আগমন ঘটে মুলচরিত্র - মিরিয়াম, ক্যালেব, মারকাসের। মিরিয়াম এবং মারকাস - দুজনই দুজনের প্রতি আকর্ষিত হয়। কিন্তু তাঁদের মধ্যে বাঁধ সাধে ধর্ম। মিরিয়ামের মা মৃত্যুর আগে বলে গেছেন, মিরিয়াম যেন কোন অখ্রিস্টানকে বিয়ে না করে। মায়ের নির্দেশ পালনের জন্য মিরিয়াম সব রকমের ত্যাগ স্বীকার করতে রাজি। অন্যদিকে মারকাসও মিরিয়ামের জন্য ধর্মত্যাগ করে খ্রিস্টান হতে রাজি। কিন্তু মিরিয়াম কথা হচ্ছে, কেবল তাঁকে পাওয়ার জন্য নামকাওয়াস্তে খ্রিস্টান হলে চলবেনা, যীশুখ্রিস্টকে ভালবেসে সাচ্চা খ্রিস্টান হতে হবে।
তখন মারকাস পড়ে যায় চিপায়, মনের দুঃখে সে বনে চলে যায়। বনে চলে যায় মানে রোমে চলে যায়, সেখানে সম্রাট নিরো মারকাসের লাইফ হেল করে দেয়। এদিকে যাওয়ার আগে মারকাস বলে গেছে, সাচ্চা খ্রিস্টান হয়েই ফিরবে সে। মিরিয়ামও জানিয়েছে অপেক্ষায় থাকবে সে।
কিন্তু বার্নিং কোয়েশ্চেন ইজ, মারকাস কিভাবে প্রমাণ করবে যে সে যীশুকে ভালবেসেই খ্রিস্টান হয়েছে, মিরিয়ামের জন্য নয়!
এদিকে পেছন থেকে গুটি চালতে থাকে মিরিয়ামের প্রেম প্রত্যখাত প্রতিহিংসাপরারন ইহুদি তরুন ক্যালেব। কাহিনী এগোতে থাকে সিরিয়া থেকে এসেনি, এসেনি থেকে জেরুজালেম, জেরুজালেম থেকে রোম। ধীরে ধীরে পার্শ্বচরিত্র হিসেবে আগমন ঘটে সম্রাট নিরো, বেনোনি, নাহুশতা, টাইটাসের। ইহুদী-খ্রিস্টান-মুর্তিপুজারক রোমান, বাঁধে তীব্র যুদ্ধ। যুদ্ধের কেন্দ্র জেরুজালেম ভেসে যায় রক্তে। গল্পের চরিত্রগুলোও ছিটকে যায় বিভিন্ন দিকে।
আমি কৌতুহল নিয়ে অপেক্ষা করি কাহিনির এন্ডিং কেমন হবে সেটা দেখার জন্য। বলিউড এন্ডিং নাকি কোরিয়ান এন্ডিং? স্যার হ্যাগার্ডের আবার কোরিয়ান এন্ডিং এর প্রতি ঝোঁক বেশি!

স্যার হ্যাগার্ডের বেশিরভাগ বইগুলোর কাহিনীই মোটামুটি মোটাদাগে দুই ভাগে ভাগ করা যায়।
এক- প্রাচীন কোন মিথ, কিংবদন্তী, গুপ্তধন বা এই জাতীয় কোন রহস্যময় কিছুর সন্ধানে আফ্রিকা মহাদেশের অতিদুর্গম কোন অঞ্চলে অভিযান।
আর দুই- প্রাচীন মিশর, রোম, সিরিয়া, জেরুজালেম ইত্যাদী নগরকেন্দ্রীক প্রেমকাহিনী যার ব্যাকগ্রাউন্ডে থাকে ধর্ম, রাজনীতি,কুটনীতি এবং যুদ্ধ।
পার্ল মেইডেন দ্বিতীয় ভাগে পড়ে। কাহিনির মত চরিত্রগুলোও টিপিক্যাল হ্যাগার্ডীয় চরিত্র। যাই হোক, বই শেষ করে দীর্ঘশ্বাস ফেলছি। চমৎকার একটা বই পড়ে ফেলার তৃপ্তিজনিত দীর্ঘশ্বাস।
প্রিয় প্রকাশনী থেকে প্রিয় অনুবাদকের অনুবাদে প্রিয় লেখকের বই। কাজেই ভাল না লাগার কোন কারনই ছিল না। চিরাচরিত সুন্দর সাবলীল গতিময় রুপান্তর। কোথাও এক মুহুর্তের জন্যও আটকে যাইনি।
আর প্রচ্ছদের কথা তো আগেই বলেছি!

A note for some of my friends: I'm reading the original version. Many of you have read the Christian Liberty Press version so there might be some differences.
This is my favorite Haggard book yet. It has adventure, a sweet romance, and lots of action. The setting was so interesting.
As usual with Haggard books, there is a fair bit of violence, some prejudiced views (in this case some anti-Semitic sentiments), a couple of crude references. and some mild language in a couple of places. Also in this book, it is stated a couple of times that it isn't against the Christin faith to marry an unbeliever, which is incorrect.
The characters in this story were the best. They were all deep, well thought out, and I loved them. Even Caleb, who made me mad, was the kind of bad guy that is understandable and you hate to see what happens to him because you feel like he could have been so much better if he had chosen differently.
All in all, this was a fun read and showcases Haggard at his best.

This went up half a star in my rating from when I read it nine years ago (3.5 to 4). The main things I don't appreciate are the occasional historical inaccuracies and the subtle antiSemitic tone, but the plot is well constructed, the writing is strong and vivid, the action is intense, and the characters are memorable and well drawn, though not fully rounded. Miriam, Nehushta, Marcus, Caleb, and others seemed to walk on the stage of my mind as I read.

I alternated between reading the Christian Liberty Press edition and listening to the Librivox recording of the original, so I got a sense of the differences. Basically, the CLP edition changed some of the wording and dialogue (many times unnecessarily, I felt) and made the theology line up more closely with the Bible (which I appreciated), such as giving more emphasis to the Scriptural reasons not to marry a non-Christian. It also added a couple of small scenes.

All in all, this is one of the Haggard novels that is most worth reading!

কাহিনী সংক্ষেপে বারবার মিরিয়াম নামটা হয়ত আপনারা খেয়াল করেছেন। বুঝতে পারছেন, পুরো গল্পটাই তাকে ঘিরে, কাহিনী সংক্ষেপের মত গল্পেও প্রতিটা স্থানে জড়িয়ে আছে এই মিরিয়াম। কিন্তু কে এই মিরিয়াম, কেনই বা তাকে ঘিরে এত মাতামাতি। বিষয়টা একটু বাড়াবাড়িও ভাবছেন অনেকে। তবে আমি এতটুকু বলতে পারি, গল্পটা যদি পড়ে থাকেন আপনি, একটুও বাড়াবাড়ি মনে হবে না বিষয়টা। বরং আপনিই প্রেমে পড়ে যেতে পারেন মিরিয়ামের!
মিরিয়াম, গলায় সব সময় মুক্তোর মালা পড়ে থাকার জন্য রোমানদের কাছে Pearl Maiden বা মুক্তোকুমারী পরিচিতি পায়। ধর্মবিশ্বাসী, পরোপকারী, ন্যায়পরায়ণসহ ভাল গুণগুলোর সমন্বয়ে এমন একটি চরিত্র হেনরি রাইডার তৈরি করেছেন, যে ভাল না লেগে পারেই না। গল্পটিতে এত মাতামাতি থাকার পরও অস্বাভাবিক মনে হয় না। এই মিরিয়ামকে ঘিরেই হেনরি রাইডার তার স্বাভাবিক লেখনীর যুদ্ধ, দ্বন্দ্ব, ঐতিহাসিক চরিত্র নিয়ে লিখেছেন গল্পটি।
গল্পটি শুরু হয়, সিজারিয়ার বন্দিশালা থেকে। সেখানে থাকা দুই খ্রিস্টান মহিলা যারা, যারা মৃত্যুর প্রতীক্ষায় রাত কাটাচ্ছে। কিন্তু ভাগ্যক্রমে বেচে যায় তারা। এই বন্দীদের একজনের ঘরেই জন্ম নেয় মিরিয়াম। মা মারা যাওয়ার পর দাসী (অপর মহিলা) নেহুশতা, মিরিয়ামকে নিয়ে চলে যায় ইহুদিদের গ্রাম এসেনিতে। এখানে ইহুদিদের মাঝে বেড়ে উঠে খ্রিস্টান মিরিয়াম। খেলার সাথী হিসেব ক্যালেবকে বন্ধু হিসেবে ভাবলেও ক্যালেব মিরিয়ামকে ভালবাসে। কিন্তু মিরিয়াম প্রেমে পড়ে রোমান সৈনিক মারকাসের। এরপর শুরু হয় ছুটোছুটি, রোমান আর ইহুদিদের যুদ্ধ। মারকাস রোমানদের পক্ষে যুদ্ধ করছে আর তার চিরশত্রু ক্যালেব ইহুদির পক্ষে, মাঝখানে খ্রিস্টান মিরিয়াম। প্রেম, যুদ্ধ, ধর্ম ন্যায়পরায়ণতা, প্রতিশোধ ঘিরে টানটান উত্তেজনা ঘটনা নিয়ে এগুতে থাকে কাহিনী.....।
গল্পটি পড়তে গিয়ে মিরিয়াম চরিত্রটি যেমন মুগ্ধ করছে আমাকে। তেমনি, গল্পটির মাঝে ঐতিহাসিক সত্যের সমন্বয়ও ভাল লেগেছে। সিজার নিরো, যাকে আমার চিনি অত্যাচারী হিসেবে। তার অত্যাচারী চরিত্রটি নিয়ে একটি প্রবাদও আছে। অত্যাচারী হলেও শিল্পপ্রেমী ছিল। ভাস্কর্যচর্চা, ছবি আকা, সঙ্গীত, কবিতার প্রতি তার টান ছিল প্রচুর। তাই গল্পে নিরো যখন, মারকাসকে দেয়া মিরিয়ামের ভাস্কর্য দেখে পাগল হয়ে ভাস্কর্য নির্মাতাকে খুঁজতে শুরু করলে অবাক হয় নি। বরং ভাল লেগেছে ঐতিহাসিক সত্যকে গল্পে পেয়ে।
একই ভাবে, গল্পটিতে বারবার উঠে এসেছে যিশুখ্রিস্টের ইহুদিদের পতনের ভবিষ্যতবাণী, জেরুজালেম পতনের ভবিষ্যতবাণীর কথা। এটা দেখে মনে পড়ে গেল, কোথায় যেন পড়েছিলাম, বাইবেলে ইহুদিদের যিশু বলেছেন, ‘তোমাদের সারা পৃথিবীময় ছড়িয়ে ছিটিয়ে দেয়া হবে। সবদেশেই তোমরাই নির্যাতন আর নিপীড়নের শিকার হবে। অনেক পায়ের তলে দলিত হবে জেরুজালেম বারবার।’ বাইবেলের এই লাইনটাই যেন সুন্দর ভাবে ফুটে উঠেছে গল্পটায়।
এত ভাল লাগার মাঝেও দুই একটি বিষয় যে ভাল লাগে নি, তা নয়। যেমন, গল্পটায়, মিরিয়ামের নানা বেনোনি ও ইথিয়েল মিরিয়ামকে ‘মা’ বলে ডাকে। যতদূর জানি আমাদের দেশে মামা, খালা, চাচা ফুপু বা সমপর্যায়ী কেউ ‘মা’ বলে ডাকে। নানা বা দাদা সম্পর্কের কেউ ‘আপু’ বা ‘ভাই’ বলেই ডাকে। তাই নানার মুখে মা শব্দটা একটু খাপছাড়া মনে হয়েছে। হতে পারে এটা লেখকের দেশে ব্যবহার করে (কলকাতাতেও মনে হয় নানা বা দাদা নাতনীকে মা বলে ডাকে), তবে আমাদের দেশের প্রেক্ষিতে অনুবাদক পরিবর্তন করলে ভাল হত।
এবার অনুবাদের কথা বলতে গেলে বলতে হয়, ইসমাঈল আরমান ভাই যথারীতি তার প্রাঞ্জলতা ধরে রেখেছেন গল্পটি অনুবাদ করতে গিয়ে। কোথাও তো হোঁচট খেতে হয়ই না, বরং গল্পের সাথে টেনে ধরে রেখেছেন পাঠককে।
যারা এখনো বইটি পড়ে নি। তাদের বলব, পড়া শুরু করুন বইটা, দেখবেন বইটিই এরপর ধরে রেখেছে আপনাকে। এবং গল্পটি পড়ে আর যাই হোক, হতাশ হতে হবে না।

The story of Miriam, born just after the first persecution of the Christians shortly after the Crucifixion and Resurrection. Though her parents don't survive, she becomes a Christian and is an observer of the fall of Jerusalem to Rome.

In the style of the epic historical saga, Miriam is unique in that she is actually a skilled artist (sculptor) and the fact that she has a profession is seen as a good thing (during a time when women of wealth were not supposed to have (horrors!) work). Often times, my imaginary Miriam looked a lot like my imaginary Rebecca from Scott's Ivanhoe. Also, an interesting choice is Neyhushta (I'm sure I messed up the spelling), Miriam's faithful nurse, who is originally from Africa and an intelligent, active and highly competent side-kick who often steers Miriam straight when she is confused, and saves the day more than the "hero" of the story!

Honestly, this plot felt like it would have been right at home in the days when Hollywood made biblical-style epic's (Ten Commandments, etc.) and often the story played out in my head like a mix of Gladiator and the aforementioned movies.

Content notes: No language issues; it is high style English, so may put off some readers for that. Sensuality-wise, though characters mention desiring Miriam and she is embarrassed by clothes she is made to wear, there is nothing beyond a kiss actually in the story. Violence is of the swords, arrows and fisticuffs type; there are several battles described during the story, including a siege with starvation tactics; there is also a ship wreck with few survivors, gladiator competitions are briefly mentioned and murders are plotted and occasionally come to fruition. In general, not many gory details, but occasionally a certain figure is dwelt on to awaken the horror of what is happening.

'Pearl Maiden' is laden with superb construction, a gripping plot, and a well defined solid theme. This uplifting novel is definitely a literary accomplishment. The characters in the story are realistically described. Holding the reader in its grasp from beginning to end, the plot provides for a moving read. This novel clearly illustrates several biblical principles; in particular one is shown throughout the whole story: God has a plan for each of our lives—a plan that cannot be thwarted. 'Pearl Maiden' is a prime example of classic, well written literature. Read it!!

এই কাহিনী যখন শুরু তখন প্যালেস্টাইন রোমান বাহিনীর দখলে। কিছুদিন পূর্বে বিশ্বাসঘাতক চরমপন্থী ইহুদি ধর্মগুরু যারা যিলট নামে পরিচিত তাদের ষড়যন্ত্রে যীশুকে হত্যা করা হয়েছে। মৃত্যুর পূর্বে যীশু অভিশাপ দেন রোমানদের হাতে ইহুদিদের নির্মম পরাজয় হবে। ইহুদিদের রক্তে ভেসে যাবে জেরুজালেম সহ পুরো প্যালেস্টাইন। যীশুর মৃত্যুর পর তার অনুসারীদের উপর চলে নির্মম অত্যাচার। তাদের ধরে ধরে বন্দী করা হয়। পুরুষদের পাঠিয়ে দেয়া হয় বিভিন্ন গ্লাডিয়েটর এরিনায় আর নারী ও শিশুদের নিক্ষেপ করা হয় ক্ষুদার্থ সিংহের মুখে। র‍্যাশেল এমনি এক হতভাগী খ্রিস্টান নারী, তাকে আর তার স্বামীকে খ্রিস্টান হবার অপরাধে রোমানদের হাতে তুলে দেয়া হয়। আর এই মহাপাপী আর কেউ নয় র‍্যাশেলের জন্মদাতা পিতা ইহুদি বেনোনি। বেনোনি তার মেয়ে আর জামাইয়ের খ্রিস্টান ধর্ম গ্রহনকে মনে প্রানে ঘৃণা করতো, কারণ সে ছিলো একজন যিলট। তাই মেয়ে আর জামাইকে নির্ধিধায় তুলে দেয় রোমানদের হাতে। সেখানে মার যায় জামাই। র‍্যাশেল কোনমতে প্রান নিয়ে পালিয়ে যায় রোমানদের হাত থেকে। সাথে ছিল ক্রিতদাসী নেহুশতা। জাহাজে করে পালানোর সময় জন্ম হয় মিরিয়ামের। মিরিয়ামের জন্মের পর মারা যায় র‍্যাশেল। মৃত্যুর পূর্বে মিরিয়ামকে নেহুশতার হাতে তুলে দিয়ে বলে ওকে একজন আদর্শ খ্রিস্টান হিসেবে গড়ে তুলবে আর বিয়ে দিবে এক আদর্শ খ্রিস্টান ছেলের সাথে। মিরিয়ামকে নিয়ে নেহুশতা পাড়ি জমায় র‍্যাশেলের মামার কাছে। র‍্যাশেলের মামা একজন সাধু পরুষ। তাদের গোত্র বাস করে এক নির্জন গ্রামে যেখানে মেয়েরা একেবারেই অপ��ংক্তেয়। কিন্তু এতিম মিরিয়ামকে তারা ফিরিয়ে দিতে পারেন। আঠারো বছর পর্যন্ত সেখানে অতি আদরের সাথে লালিত পালিত মিরিয়াম। খেলার সাথী হিসেবে পায় ক্যালেব কে। ক্যালেব এক ইহুদি বালক যার পিতাকে যিলট আর রোমানরা মিলে ষড়যন্ত্র করে হত্যা করে। তাই এই দুই সম্প্রদায়ের মানুষকে ভীষণ ঘৃণা করে ক্যালেব। কূটবুদ্ধি, প্রতিহিংসা, আত্মকেন্দ্রিক, স্বার্থপর, প্রতিশোধ পরায়ণ একজন ইহুদির যত গুনাবলী থাকা দরকার তার সবই আছে ক্যালেবের মাঝে। কিন্তু সে ভীষণ ভালোবাসে মিরিয়ামকে। সে কথা মিরিয়ামকে বললে মিরিয়াম ফিরিয়ে দেয় ক্যালেবকে। ক্যালেব শপথ করে বলে সে মিরিয়ামকে না পেলে কেউ তাকে পাবেনা। একদিন কিছু রোমান সৈনিক আসে গ্রামে, যার কমান্ডার সুদর্শন সৈনিক মারকাস। প্রথম দেখায় একে অপরকে ভালোবেসে ফেলে দুজনকে। প্রতিহিংসায় পাগল হয়ে যায় ক্যালেব। জমে ওঠে এক অনবদ্য ত্রিভুজ প্রেমের কাহিনী। রাতের আধারে মারকাসের উপর ঝাঁপিয়ে পড়ে তরবারি হাতে। কিন্তু মারকাসের কাছে পরাজিত হয়ে রাতের আধারে পালিয়ে যায় গ্রাম ছেড়ে। জেরুজালেম গিয়ে পৈত্রিক সম্পত্তি উদ্ধার করে বড়লোক ও প্রভাবশালী লোকে পরিনত হয় ক্যালেব। এদিকে মারকাসের কাছে রোম থেকে খবর আসে তার চাচা মৃত্যু শয্যায়। মিরিয়ামের কাছে বিদায় নিয়ে চলে যায় রোমে। চাচা মৃত্যুর পর তার বিপুল সম্পদের মালিক হয় মারকাস। পরিনত হয় রোমের অন্যতম প্রভাবশালী লোকে। কিন্তু রোমান সম্রাট জুলিয়াস নিরোর খামখেয়ালিতে রোমে আটকে পড়ে মারকাস। এদিকে বেনিনো তার মেয়ে আর জামাইয়ের প্রতি যে অন্যায় করেছে তার ভুল বুঝতে পেরে মিরিয়ামকে নিজের কাছে নিয়ে আসে। মিরিয়াম তার নানার বিশাল বিত্ত ভৈবভের উত্তারাধিকার নির্বাচিত হয়। এদিকে প্যালেস্টাইনে বেধে ওঠে যুদ্ধের ধামামা। ইহুদীরা ঝাঁপিয়ে পড়ে রোমানদের উপর। রোম থেকে আসে বিশাল সৈন্য বাহিনী। শুরু হয় ইতিহাসের সবচেয়ে জঘন্যতম গণহত্যা। রোমানরা ইহুদিদের মেরে কেটে সাফ করে দেয় পুরো প্যালেস্টাইন থেকে। বন্দী করে অসংখ্য নারী পুরুষ আর শিশুদের। দাস দাসী হিসেবে বিক্রি করার জন্য রোমান সেনাপতি টাইরাস তাদের পাঠিয়ে দেয় রোমে। এই দলে ঠাই হয় মিরিয়ামের। রোমের বাজারে তাকে বিক্রির জন্য নিলাম ডাকা হয়। বহুমূল্য অর্থের বিনিময়ে মিরিয়ামকে কিনে নেয় এক অজ্ঞাত পরিচয় ব্যাক্তি। এদিকে ক্যালেব মিরিয়ামকে খোজার জন্য রোমে এসে পৌছায় মিশরীয় বনিকের বেশে। মারকাস তখন পলাতক। সেই অবস্থায় সেও মিরিয়ামকে উদ্ধারের জোর প্রচেষ্টা চালায়। কে জিতবে এই যুদ্ধে। নিয়তি চায় তিনজনের একজনের বলিদান। কে হবে সেই বলির পাত্র। আর মিরিয়াম কি পারবে তার মায়ের ইচ্ছার বিরুদ্ধে গিয়ে একজন বিধর্মীকে বিয়ে করতে?

বইয়ের মূল কাহিনী এগিয়েছে রোমান ইহুদি যুদ্ধকে কেন্দ্র করে। মাঝখানে নব্য খ্রিস্টান ধর্মের অনুসারীরা হয়েছে নির্যাতিত আর নিস্পেসিত। সেই সাথে আছে অনবদ্য ত্রিভুজ প্রেমের এক কাহিনী। সব মিলিয়ে অসাধারণ একটা কাহিনী।

Having read several other Rider Haggard books dealing with lost civilizations of Africa, I was curious to see how he would handle historical fiction. Set in the first century A.D. in such colorful locales as Jerusalem and Rome, Tyre and Alexandria, "Pearl Maiden" is a love story that, like many of Rider Haggard's other works, is filled with daring adventures, risky escapes, and pitched battles, while still finds moments to thoughtfully reflect upon man's ultimate questions of destiny, courage, sin, and God.

Compared to Haggard's other adventure novels which touch upon the fantastic, "Pearl Maiden" is almost stunningly accurate in its level of historical detail. Even where he takes liberties, such as his romanticized view of the Essenes, Haggard nevertheless captures, with a brilliantly re-constructive imagination, the excitement and terror of the events he records as the backdrop to his romance. I'm specifically thinking of the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 A.D. and the triumphal march of Titus through the streets of Rome, both of which Haggard re-tells with a novelist's power. The reader sees with awestruck horror the flames begin to lick up the temple's walls and he hears the anguished sobs of ragged Jewish slaves being marched down the Appian Way; he sees the desperate attack of the remaining Zealots crushed by the Roman legionnaires in the Court of the Gentiles and he feels the tramp of horses hoofs and soldiers' feet on the stone road winding through the Roman Forum, where all the pomp and pageantry of Rome stuns our imaginations to this day. Haggard delights in describing epic battles and vast seas of men and horses locked in combat, and he outdoes himself in the chapters which take place in Jerusalem at its fall to Titus. Here he takes Josephus's account and re-tells it from the perspective of his novel's protagonist in a harrowing and brilliant narrative.

The protagonist, Miriam, and other characters of the novel, such as Nou, the Essenes, and Cyril, are strongly faithful to God and bless His Name and offer prayers frequently. It was interesting for me to see Haggard handle matters of Christian faith more directly in this novel than in others such as "She" or "King Solomon's Mines," where characters like Quatermain will offer an occasional prayer or mention the hand of Providence, without meditating for too long. In "Pearl Maiden" there is much more sustained thought given to religion. The Christian characters are fearless, loving, hospitable people. They are also honorable, more so than the falsely honorable Romans, for they understand self-sacrifice and love by the example of their Leader: the Nazarene, Jesus Christ, who is far from the fickle, jealous, and lustful example of Caesar.

Pearl Maiden always was one of my favorite books about the early church. It's a gripping, realistic, and well written tale of the Fall of Jerusalem and surrounding events. The story is engaging and easy to read; I know some of the reviewers have said that it's too long and drawn out, but I completely disagree.

Miriam is the daughter of a young Christian woman doomed to martyrdom, but rescued by her faithful Libyan servant, Nehushta, only to die in childbirth some weeks later. For the first nineteen years of her life, Miriam dwelt among the Essenes, who were a Jewish sect consisting mostly of ascetics, almost all of whom were men. It was there that she first met the Roman Marcus, and, almost against her will, learned to love him. However, a command was laid upon her by her mother that she should never wed a man who was not a Christian, and Miriam refused to disobey that command. Other reviewers have claimed that God wouldn't be pleased by a command that comes in the way of true love, but, once again, I disagree. I think it was highly admirable in Miriam to stand fast to the command of her parents. A Christian should never be unequally yoked to an unbeliever. Ultimately, that is the main theme of the entire book, as Miriam and Marcus endure years of separation, tremendous hardship, war, persecution, prison, slavery, and ultimate restoration at the end of the book.

All of the characters in this book are well-rounded; the way in which their stories intermingle and unfold gives a clear portrayal of the hand of God working. Haggard has done an excellent job with this historical fiction work. I was drawn into and engaged by the story, particularly during the Fall of Jerusalem. This book is an excellent portrayal of the early Church in Rome and in Judea.

‎সত্যি বলতে হেনরি রাইডার হ্যাগার্ডের লেখা নিয়ে নতুন করে কিছু বলার নেই। উনার লেখনীতে যেন জাদু আছে। পুরো বই পড়ার সময় আর অন্য কোনোদিকে মনোযোগ দেয়া যায় না। উনার লেখা প্রায় ১৫+ বই পড়েছি, তাও যেন বারবার আমি মুগ্ধ হই।

‎তবে এই লেখাতে মুগ্ধ হবার ভিন্ন কারণ আছে। যদিও তাঁর সব লেখাতেই যুদ্ধবিগ্রহ থাকে। এই বইতেও ছিল। তবুও অন্যরকম ভালো লেগেছে। সৃষ্টিকর্তার প্রতি অটল বিশ্বাসে যদি  কেউ নিজেকে সঁপে দেয়, তাঁর উপর ছাড়া অন্য কারো উপর ভরসা করে না, দিনশেষে হাজারো অগ্নিপরীক্ষার পর সৃষ্টিকর্তা তাকেই দুহাত ভরে উজাড় করে দেয় সবকিছু। এমন চমৎকার এক অটল বিশ্বাসের উপাখ্যান পড়েছি যেন।

‎এই বই পড়ার সময় আরেকটা মজার বিষয় আবিষ্কার করলাম। এই গল্পের প্লট যিশুখ্রিষ্টের উত্থানের কয়েক বছর পরের। যখন নীরো মারা যায় তার কয়েক বছর পরের সময়কাল। সেন্ট পলের কাছ থেকে মিরিয়ামের একান্ত অনুগত দাসী নোউ দীক্ষা নিয়েছিল। এই সেন্ট পলের ধর্মপ্রচারের ব্যাপারে আমি আরেকটা বইতে পেয়েছি। জিমি তানহাব তাঁর 'রক্ততৃষ্ণা' বইতে সেন্ট পলের ধর্মপ্রচার, রোমান শাসকদের অত্যাচার-অনাচারের কথা বেশ সুন্দরভাবে ফুটিয়ে তুলেছেন। তাঁর বইতে সেন্ট পলের কাছ থেকে গল্পের নায়ক দীক্ষা নিয়েছিল।

‎দুই বই কাছাকাছি সময়কালের আর দুটোতেই খ্রিস্টানদের প্রতি বর্বর রোমানদের অত্যাচারের নৃশংস বর্ণনা পড়ে শিহরিত হয়েছি। যুগে যুগে নিষ্কলুষ, নিরীহ, ধর্মপ্রাণ মানুষদের উপর সবলদের অত্যাচার যেন চলতেই থাকে।

‎৩৮৪ সাইজের বিশাল কলেবরের (আমার কাছে!) বইটি পড়া শুরু করার আগেই ভেবেছিলাম শেষ করতে পারব না৷ মাঝে অনেকদিন পড়ার গ্যাপের জন্য মনে হচ্ছিলো এতো বড় বই হাতে নেয়া ঠিক হবে না। অথচ মাত্র সপ্তাহখানেকের মাঝেই শেষ করে ফেলেছি। হেনরি সাহেবের বই আমাকে কখনোই হতাশ করেনি। এবারও ভালো লেগেছে। সুখপাঠ্য।

Story of the rise and fall of Jerusalem starting just after the Crucifixion and Resurrection and the Jewish rebellion and Roman conquest. Yet another Haggard historical romance in which young people from different cultures love each other and pledge themselves to each other for life and the next, but are unable to marry and spend years apart facing various trials and tribulations which bring them together again and then apart. Miriam, a young Christian who is bound by the death pledges of her parents that she only marry a Christian and her “lover” Marcus, a Roman officer. Also, there is Caleb, a Jew and non Christian, raised with Miriam, who loves her and swears that she’ll either marry him or no one and that he’ll kill Marcus. He exists throughout the story as a constant thorn.

While the story line may be good, these “star crossed” Haggard romances drag on while lovers and rival dance around each other over many years leaving the tired reader wondering whether love will win out in the end and the two managed to get together in their life times or whether it will be in their after lives that they will be together.

Set in the first century of the common era Pearl-Maiden is quite a vivid tale set in biblical times in Jerusalem itself, and the surrounding region.

Whilst the story starts off a little slowly as it lays the foundation for where and the circumstances to which Miriam is born, once she is on her own with the Essenes Jewish sect the story begins to pick up and becomes quite interesting.

The tension depicted of the inter-Jewish conflict leading up to and during the siege of Jerusalem is quite daunting and morally appalling. It really paints quite a terrible picture of the Jewish community at that time, with the exclusion of the Essenes who seem to be the only morally unimpeachable society within the novel.

The ending was pleasant and wrapped up the story neatly. I think people who are interested in historical fiction stories and aren't turned off by the more rigid writing style of the 18th to early 19th century would find it an enjoyable and immersive read.
