Bound by Darkness takes us back into the world of the Soul Gatherers. This time the focus is on Brian Webster, the young but talented gatherer we met in Drawn Into Darkness. He struggles over his past, like all the gatherers, serving his time in purgatory under Death's control.

The gatherers negotiate with Death to be allowed to hunt for the relics while continuing their service of gathering souls.

The five relics, Ignobles, "are all unique to the Crucifixion but never handled by the Son of Go

You know those TV shows where you never see the characters working, but supposedly they have jobs? The Gatherers gather souls. It's never really explained why, and they have to take physical tranportation to get there, so the whole premise seems really dopey. If they were really gathering, they'd be busy every second. Mostly they wander around looking for special coins, and everyone has trust issues.

I wanted to like this book more but it has some major flaws.
Great plot - Good must keep the Judas Coins out of Satan's reach. Problem - a Gatherer is working, albeit reluctantly, with 3 Thrall Demons to get the sacred relics. It seemed like a good start but the main couple don't have much going for them. Their profession is gathering souls but they do precious little of that. Brian is riddled with guilt and feels unworthy of, well ... everything and Lena seems solely occupied with saving her two

Liked it, didn't love it. This book didn't seem to have the same intensity as the first. Brian was too likable, not brooding enough. And Lena's constant escaping was a little tiring. I was more interested in the story line happening with Carlos and Emily. Something is seriously wrong with him and is tweaking my curiosity. Brian and Lena are an ok couple, not the best romance I've ever read, but not the worse. I will still keep reading the series. The basis of this series is unique and interestin ...more

I have really enjoyed this series. This is a such an thought provoking story about people who have made mistakes during their lives and have to serve in Purgatory by serving Death for five hundred years by gathering souls. They gather Souls after death and somtimes have to fight Demons for Souls and find relics that were not necessarily holy but affected Jesus' journey to the cross. If Satan should get his hands on these relics, it will give Satan more power. I will definietly keep this series a ...more

I had a hard time deciding how many stars to give this book. I will start by saying I wasn't a big fan of the book. The main love story in the book was pretty blah. I did not like Lena and I didn't get enough from Brian for me to be hoping for his happy ending. I actually left the book at home one day and decided to work through lunch instead of read. What kept me intrigued was the subplot with Carlos and Emily. They would pop in just often enough to keep the pages turning otherwise I may not ha ...more

With the Soul Gatherer series, Ms. McCleave has become one of my favorite authors. Though not quite as captivating as the first book, this one starts off with a bang and keeps the action going throughout most of the book. The characters from the first book are still featured quite a bit here, which just added to my enjoyment. My only issue was that I didn't find Brian and Lena to be that scorching as a couple - though troubled by the past, Brian was just such a nice guy, and the sparks didn't le ...more

The second book in the Soul Gatherer novel we get Brian's story! While fighting a demon, a girl dies that he's trying to save. He find on her a special coin and takes up her cause, learning about the importance of the coin and realizing he must find all of them or Satan will get the upper hand! He meets Lena, who has most of the coins, and kidnaps her to convince her to tell him where they are. Lena is a strong woman and not one to listen to an alpha male, no matter how hot he is! Another good r ...more

Unfortunately I found "Bound By Darkness" by Annette McCleave to be an average read. It was hard to immerse myself into the storyline until about a third of the way through. Would I continue to read this series of books? I don't think so - it just didn't flow for me.

Really enjoying the Gatherers series, about warriors who deliver souls, fight demons, and protect or retrieve holy artifacts. Great writing, interesting world, nicely developed romance. Looking forward to the next!
