Featuring the works of William Blake, Robert Louis Stevenson, Lewis Carroll, and others, this enchanting collection presents nearly 100 classic childhood poems illustrated by a master of the Art Nouveau style. Willy Pogány recaptures the wide-eyed wonderment of such favorites as "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star" and "A Visit from St. Nicholas."
Although there are some classics here, most of this type of poetry has fallen out of fashion. (Phoebe Cary's somewhat preachy "Little Gottlieb" is an example.) The few poems in this book that are still known testify to their power. I enjoyed the illustrations, but would probably not bore any little ones with these poems. The absence of any of Robert Louis Stevenson's better-known poems from "Child's Garden of Verses" was glaring since his intelligent, lyrical poems have stood the test of time. (His "The Little Land" was included, but it hasn't held up as well as many of the others.)
