For a short, this gives a fabulous amount of story! It also ties up something that has long bothered and annoyed me between Harlan and Ursula. I’m told it ties into a number of different series from this author as well, so I’m off to find out what happens next and in what series!

I’ve been enjoying Jeffe Kennedy’s Uncharted Realms fantasy romance series since I picked up The Crown of the Queen, a bridging novel between the author’s Twelve Kingdoms series (which I’ve yet to read) and her Uncharted Realms series (which I’ve now read almost to completion). The end of that series is out now (The Fate of the Tala), but before I get to it, I wanted to catch up with a novella released in 2019, The Dragons of Summer. Originally it was included in the Seasons of Sorcery anthology in 2018 but is available now on its own. The author has also released a high fantasy (not fantasy romance) series, Chronicles of Dasnaria, which links to these others as well. I don’t think you have to have read every story previously to enjoy this one, but some familiarity with the characters and overall plot is definitely advantageous. This review may contain spoilers as a result of its multi-series background.

A journey back in many ways to the couple that started this authors epic series. Harlan is a consort keeping secrets from his Queen and he's known that's always going to be a bad idea . Ursula knows more than Harlan thinks about his family and past and he faces hard truths amidst all manner of challenges. A face from his past, enemies at the gates but even more worrying it looks like there's a rival for Ursula's hand ! Could it get any worse ?
This short story bridges gaps between other books and even connects to a spin off trilogy. I have long been impressed by the characters and world building in these books and if you enjoy both romance and fantasy than this authors work is highly recommended.

As The Snows of Windroven tackles relationship problems with Ash & Amy and leaves them with a stronger and deeper connection, the same can be said about The Dragons of Summer, but now it's time for Harlan and Ursula.
Honestly, nothing much happens but knowing Jeffe Kennedy, she is still going to find a way to reference something from this novella, so if you want to follow the plot to the fullest, I recommend you do not skip it.

The Dragons of Summer is a fantasy romance novella and book 6 in the Uncharted Realms series. As consort to the High Queen and former mercenary, Harlan finds himself facing a new challenge. He’s used to hiding his secrets, but his vows have put him in a precarious situation. Can he open himself up, or will he fall to the looming threat?
This was an interesting read. I enjoyed the additional insight of Harlan’s history after we met him in The Talon of the Hawk. The growth of his relationship with Ursula was so nice to see and I appreciated his perspective on sensitive topics covered in previous books. This novella was a good setup for the next book in the series and i enjoyed the additional content of a couple we met before
Overall this was a four star read. I really enjoyed Harlan and Ursula’s story and liked this additional content for them. This novella definitely has some darker elements, so please check triggers if you’re sensitive. This novella did have a spicy scene later on, so overall two flames for spice
If you’re a fan of strong characters, unique magic and fun mysteries, then pick this one up! Even though this is technically a standalone, I recommend reading the Twelve Kingdoms series, and the previous books in this series before this to get the most from the cameos and story.

This was an interesting read. I enjoyed the additional insight of Harlan’s history after we met him in The Talon of the Hawk. More on Ursula and Harlan, from Harlan’s POV, including Ursula and Harlan finally married by a priestess of Danu. Much of the book was a revisit of Harlan’s family tree and Jenna’s escape.
I still have trouble fitting the Chronicles of Dasnaria trilogy into the larger reading order, because I needed Zynda and Zyr’s books to be back to back where the trilogy is somehow weaved in between. But this is clearly a post trilogy short, as Danu’s priestess Kaedrin connects the dots for Harlan and Kral. I suspect Ivariel will make an appearance again soon.
Only complaint was that I was so used to Harlan and Ursula from Ursula’s POV that I found myself confused at who was speaking a few times.

This was really well paced and close to a full novel’s worth of story. Really well done novella. I had this novella as part of an anthology from a while back and had missed this story.
Although it’s part of the Uncharted Realms series, since that is a spin-off of the Twelve Kingdoms (which I’ve read), it was very easy to read this without having read any of the Uncharted Realms books yet.
This is a Harlan/Ursula novella that has a lot of deep discussions and we find out more of Harman’s very dark and tragic past (or rather his sister’s). I don’t think this works as a standalone at all, however, since it relies heavily on knowing the world and characters. You should read it after the Twelve Kingdoms or the Uncharted Realms series.
Although now that I read this, it reminds me how much I do like this world Jeffe Kennedy has created and will likely return to later.

I read this novella when it first came out because I can never get enough of Harlan and Ursula (my absolute favorite couple from the Twelve Kingdoms saga) I read it again recently because I had finally caught up with the rest of the series in proper order, and I wanted to see where it fit. I love the way each of these stories focuses on the growth and personal journey of an individual while also being tied into an elaborate tapestry of stories that give a more complete picture of the whole world. While I really love this novella, even on a second reading, I think it is more of a fan favorite than a good intro to the world. Treat yourself and read Talon of the Hawk first for the full experience.

It took me a few chapters to get into this but the last half was much stronger. Definitely not a stand-alone, but part of a longer series. In this we revisit Harlan and Ursula from Talon of the Hawk, only this time we get Harlan POV.

This is a short novella, and it basically recaps Jenna's journey in her own books, but it was still enjoyable to see how Harlan and Ursula figure out each other's needs and work together. Plus, it made me determined to read Jenna's story for myself, something I wasn't interested in originally.

This novella made me want to start this series from the beginning! It has an interesting magical world and is extremely well written. Strong female characters made it even better!

So, it's difficult to give this novella a review.
I mean: Yes! It's a totally awesome story. The tension between Ursula and Harlan is sooo well done, and their problems feel realistic and are handled awesomely. And the danger that pops up and the resulting action are so cool! And the ending is so satisfying.
But I have to confess I suggested several things for this novella that got used for the danger that pops up and the resulting action. Maybe it's just me, but that makes me feel like I'm not the right person to review this. Maybe it's nonsense for me to think so, because I didn't write any of it, I just nudged some ideas toward Jeffe to use, and it was her who totally rocked that and wrote an awesome story.
Anyway, that's why this is more of an enthusiastic rave than a regular review. But I tell you: this is soooo good! Go read it!
