Edmond Moore Hamilton was a popular author of science fiction stories and novels throughout the mid-twentieth century. Born in Youngstown, Ohio, he was raised there and in nearby New Castle, Pennsylvania. Something of a child prodigy, he graduated high school and started college (Westminster College, New Wilmington, Pennsylvania) at the age of 14--but washed out at 17. He was the Golden Age writer who worked on Batman, the Legion of Super-Heroes, and many sci-fi books.

This is a typical Captain Future adventure, but not one of my favorites. I have an inexplicable dislike of the device of having a child stow away and join in an adventure; it was a common trope of the pulp era and it always annoyed me. Other than the inclusion of Johnny Kirk, The Magician of Mars is a fine old space opera. (Though I must admit having a Kirk on your spaceship is usually a pretty good thing.)

Edmond Hamilton significantly improved his writing style. While in Calling Captian Future he is repeating always the same catch phrases, he is almost completely omitting them for the benefit of a more fluent style. I really enjoyed this book, and since I grew up with the German translation of the Anime series I was excited to read this story.

The pulp era SiFi hero, Captain Future is a more scientific version of Buck Rogers or Flash Gordon. He and his band of Futuremen are special criminal investigators for the Earth government and are similar to Doc Savage and his band of helpers. Great reads, recommended
