Beautifully illustrated in full color, this book presents the first guide of recent years to explore the cult of Mary and the most famous Marian shrines from around the world.
This was a very interesting book. It contains short details of special places of worship to The Blessed Mother throughout the world. They were not necessarily places of apparitions but places for quiet devotion. I agree with other reviewers that there were too few pictures but also the descriptions and revelations were not always adequate. This was really informative and also will serve a good starting point to learn more...for instance what prayer is depicted on the Prayer Card of Evesham.
As a catholic who battles with my faith and religion in on a daily basis, I found this to be quite interesting. The devotion of a few have created these wide range shrines, which all have the same thing in common, they were all built on the foundation of absolute and unwaverying gratitude. For whatever miracles were offered, real or imagined. They all share a certain peacefulness and reverence. I was lucky to have visited one, Our Lady of Knock, County Mayo, Ireland. There was a certain peace when walking on the grounds, knowing that real people from a fairly recent (1879) time had undergone their amazing moment in this exact spot. It was a moving experience. I do wish I could visit more sites mentioned in the book. Just to visit some of the countries mentioned sounds exciting.
I found a pretty big mistake in which visitors who want to see the Basilica of our Lady of Guadalupe are mistakenly directed to the town of Guadalupe outside of Mexico City. The Basilica is in fact located on the north side of Mexico City.
This was at my library. A sampling of currently existing shrines around the world. I was hoping for more pictures, but it was interesting reading the various stories of visitations/apparitions of the virgin to many people, the similarities and some variance.
