I bought this book without being at all familiar with the author or any of her previous work and overall, I wasn't disappointed...it was a very engaging and entertaining read. I found myself touched by the relationship between Epiphany and her mother, pseudo-envious of her carefree lifestyle and wishful that I had a manager half as good as Nichelle.
However, I did find that the book got to a point for me where it seemed like it was just spinning it's wheels and not really progressing...it was just constant detailed, brand-dropping shopping trips, descriptive menus (which I actually found kind of endearing...a model who loves to eat), and tales of marathon sex sessions (or desires of such). The constant roller coaster with Malik and Ced, some of which seemed very conflicting...the period of mourning...the accounts of work that seemed to just fall into her lap...I often wondered when something else was going to happen. Enter Lorenzo.
This character, while I know serves a purpose, often seemed unnecessary to me. The relationship between him and Epiphany seemed forced, but maybe that was the intent. I know I wanted to cut Epiphany when she turned Ced down. I hated to see her settle and try to convince herself to be with a man that she obviously didn't really want instead of the man she had always loved and that had always loved her. But I guess we'll see what happens in the next volume, which I do intend on getting. I just hope I don't have to keep nibbling on the complimentary hors d'oeuvres for so long before I get to the meat this time.
