Nocturnal provides a great opportunity to try out some new authors that might not already be on your 'to-read' list. Each story is a stand-alone story in itself, but at least two of them tie into other stories.
The first story, The Phoenix Project, is my personal favorite. There's just something about the storyline itself, combined with the characters, that really made this one stand out for me. If I had to describe it in one sentence, it would be 'a werewolf story without werewolves'. Within a very short amount of time, a new and realistic world is created; a world where innocent men and women are reduced to mere lab rats, a world where you wake up every morning knowing this day could be your last. Amara and Nick are characters I grew to care about and I received a whole lot of satisfaction when the results of experimentation turned out to work in their favor. I don't know if this is the last that we'll see of them and the rest of the Morphates, but I really hope this isn't the end of their story.
I thought Crystal Dreams started off a little slow, but it soon found it's footing and maintained a steady pace. Darius at first seems like a nice enough guy, but doesn't quite fit the hero mold. At the same time, Mari at first seems feisty but otherwise helpless when facing a paranormal enemy. Watching the two of them grow comfortable with their abilities (and each other) is the driving force behind the enjoyable storyline. This is one of those aforementioned stories that tie into other work, and I'll continue to follow the Lemuria/Earth battle against demons in Hellfire.
Spark of Temptation was something I've anticipated since learning it was an adventure featuring two of the characters from Hunted by the Others. At the end of that book, we kind of get a hint that something happened between private investigator, Sara, and Arnold the mage, but a hint is all we get at that time. Spark of Temptation provides a double treat by being an exciting story and revealing exactly what happened between the two of them, as well as providing more intensity and drama with Royce and the White Hats. The story also provides a hint of it's own - Sara received an interesting injury towards the end of HBTO and there are signs that there might be more to this than meets the eye. No spoilers here so you'll have to read the books to get the details ;o) If you haven't read Hunted by the Others, you can check out my review of it here.
My Soul to Take is a paranormal story with a hint of horror and the two genres work perfectly together here. Maggie is by-the-book doctor who has to come to terms with her past when confronted with Derek, a patient who appears to be possessed. Watching her come to terms with the possibility of Derek's problem existing beyond the realms of conventional medicine is an interesting journey and the final battle is one that will have you anxiously turning the pages to find out who wins. I also thought the malevolent Edgar was a picture of perfect evil. You'll despise him and fear him at the same time.
Four great stories make for one great book, and the variety of the subject matter will keep you entertained from cover to cover.
Nocturnal is a bit of a mishmash of genres, sci fi, urban fantasy and paranormal romance with no obvious unifying theme, but Nocturnal did give me chance to try three new-to-me authors: paranormal romance authors Douglas and Willis, as well urban fantasy author Haines and to read a short by an old favorite author Franks.
Here's a quick little blurb for the stories which make up Nocturnal:
Spark of Temptation- Jess Haines - continuing directly after her urban fantasy series, Hunted by Others, PI Sara is blackmailed into taking on a job working for vampire leader Royce, which puts her in the sights of the most radical of the anti-Others groups. but luckily she has mage Arnold watching her back (I liked this one mostly because I liked the geeky Arnold, there is some very mild romance but it is oddly executed.)
My Soul To Take - Clare Willis - A pyschiatric intern is drawn to a talented young man who is not crazy but possessed - (I found this to be the most appealing of the stories, I thought that the Willis did a good job of making a connection between her leads and I liked the touch of voodoo too.)
Crystal Dreams - Kate Douglas - connected to her Demon Hunter series, a lemurian warrior must protect a women who appears to be a magnet for demons which have escaped to the Earth - (pleasant enough romance with a nice bit of steam.)
The Phoenix Project - Jacqueline Frank - Genetically modified shapeshifters can't fight their new animal instincts to mate and to fight - (This is the most erotic story in the book and The hero has real potential but the story was too short to morph the pairs' animal need to claim a mate and to violently protect that claim and into a romance. This felt like it should be series starter, but I checked Frank's website and it's not.)
This one was more like a psychological trip than a romance. I felt almost nothing during the sex scenes, even though they were explicit. Too many unknowns! And I felt like I had gotten to know the characters, only for them to change drastically... Yeah this one fell flat.
"Crystal Dreams" by Kate Douglas
Talk about deus ex machina, goodness gracious. It was cute except for that.
"Spark of Temptation" by Jess Haines
Whoever wrote the blurb must not have actually read this book. The so-called "attraction" the two main characters had was.... I don't know, must have been in a different book? Okay so they supposedly hook up at the end... but why?? And why was I supposed to care about these two at all? Seriously this was a complete failure of a short story.
"My Soul to Take" by Clare Willis
This was the best of the 4, except... the h continued to question her sister right up to the end and was basically useless the whole time, and then ends up going into practice with her sister? Why and how? And the guy.... I'm sorry, why is he hooking up with her in the end? Ugh whatever.
Review courtesy of AllThingsUrbanFantasy.blogspot.com
I had never read anything by any of the authors in this anthology apart from Jess Haines, and apart from Jess’s story, I’m not likely to seek them out after reading their efforts in NOCTURNAL. All in all, this is a very disjointed collection containing a hardcore erotic story, two paranormal romances, and an urban fantasy.
The Phoenix Project by Jacquelyn Frank was by far the most sexually explicit thing I have ever read. The story is 130 pages long and I would say that at least 120 of those pages were sex scenes. The story itself, what little there was, was actually pretty interesting. In a dystopian world, people are abducted from their homes, imprisoned, and used a lab rats until they die. Amara and Nick are genetically altered and thrown into a room together naked. They quickly discover an almost painfully animalistic need to mate, along with a few erotic alterations to their bodies. Lots, and lots, and lots of shockingly detailed graphic sex follows. Hardcore erotica is really not the kind of thing I enjoy reading, so I’m feeling somewhat at a loss as to how to rate this one… ?/5 bats
By comparison, Crystal Dreams by Kate Douglas (100 pages), about inter-dimensional demons and the immortal warriors devoted to destroying them, was tame, although it also contains several long graphic sex scenes. When demons target a magic shop owner, the warrior vows to protect her and falls in lust, sorry love, along the way. The world building was intriguing, but mostly wasting in this tale. Worse, neither character was particularly strong. Darius was tired as the stoic warrior who succumbs to a pretty face, and Mari wasn’t half as sparkling as the crystals she sold…2/5 bats
Spark of Temptation by Jess Haines (102 pages) was the reason I wanted to read this anthology and it didn't disappoint. Focusing on two supporting characters from Jess's excellent urban fantasy debut Hunted By The Others, this story picks up at the end of the previous book while Shiarra is still recovering in the hospital and shows us how her investigating partner Sara and the mage Arnold got together. This is a solid urban fantasy in a complex world of recently revealed Others (non-humans), with likable characters, paranormal peril, and one super sexy vampire. Unlike the other three stories in NOCTURNAL, this one is subtly sexy without any actual sex…4/5 bats
The last story, My Soul to Take by Clare Willis (starts on 333) involves a doctor in a psychiatric ward and her possible possessed suicidal patient. It can be difficult to establish a credible romance in short stories, but I almost feel like this story didn’t even try. Within seconds of meeting each other the characters are making out declaring their love only pages later. There is also a side plot where the doctor tries to reconnect with her sister after years of estrangement following the suicide of their mother, but again it fell flat…2/5 bats
Sexual Content: From obscenely graphic erotica in one story, only references to sex in another, and everything in between.
I really liked " The Phoenix Project which was a short novel in this anthology by Jaquelyn Frank. Interesting concept of genetically altered humans, a little like X-men. The sex was very steamy. Wish it was a longer story. Started to read "Crystal Dreams" but didn't want to finish it. The writing was a little too simplistic for my taste. I also didn't want to read the other stories in this anthology.
I opened this book with the sole intention of only reading Jess Haines's story. But then I was convinced by a certain someone to read the other stories, which is why I have decided to review all four pieces below.
Overall Verdict: 2/5 Stars
The Phoenix Project by Jacquelyn Frank - 2/5 Like many other reviewers have said previously, this book was the most sexual out of all four. And you know, if it weren't for a few factors, I think I would have truly enjoyed the story. The premise was interesting, it really was, and I absolutely loved the animalistic/human interactions. But then, I guess a lot of you already knew I did, since I'm a huge werewolf fan. Regardless, I genuinely was interested in that particular part, and kept reading because of it. So, let it be known that, despite my rating, Jacquelyn Frank can write. So well, that I think I might explore another book of hers at a later date. And she can write some steamy sex scenes. However, I remained unconvinced of the "love" between hero and heroine.
So let's focus on the rape. Is it considered rape if both parties are attracted to each other, and both parties are being forced to fuck each other? In my mind, yes, it is. Will everyone be bothered by this when they read it? No, they won't. Some will be able to overlook it (which is what I think was intended when the story was written), and others, like me, will grit their teeth and roll their eyes and shake their heads when any word of "love" is uttered in this tale.
Maybe I have issues with love in these sorts of stories because I don't buy into the whole: "oh hey, we're both being forced to have sex with each other... and now, suddenly, after having sex with you about five times and killing some crazy bitch, I love you!" No. Not happening. I'm sorry, some people might buy it, some people might be able to overlook it, but I don't, and I can't.
I grew tired of the heroine in the beginning stating how scared she was. First time? Okay. Second, third, fourth, etc, times? Shut up already, please. How does Amara go from someone so quiet, internal woman who's grown apathetic about her captivity to suddenly telling a complete stranger that she's scared? Kind of nit-picky on my part, but it bugged me. I didn't think it was necessary to have her keep repeating it.
Finally there's the whole... back out in human civilization, and we're the only ones who can save all these other people because the police force is busy with their thumbs up their asses. I'll admit it, I didn't care. I skimmed. I don't even remember what happened because I was comatose at this point after only sleeping for 2 hours the night before.
Sexytime Heat Level: 4/5 - If one can overlook the rape, the sex is sizzling. Sexual Tension: 0.5/5 - There's a teensy bit, but that was it. Interest Level: 5/5 - for the start/middle; 0/5 for the end.
Crystal Dreams by Kate Douglas - DNF Mari was a bit too weird for my tastes, both with the way she talked to herself, and the way she acted around Darius. Plus, having an ex-boyfriend stealing funds from your bank account? I would have imagined she would take legal action, if possible. Or at least talk to the bank. And why would you let someone you're dating have access to your credit cards in the first place? Maybe if you're married, definitely not when you're dating.
I was also not interested in this new world with some different race with demon killing crystal swords... 40 pages in, and the plot/characters still left me uninterested. This story was not for me, though I'm sure other people might enjoy it.
Sexytime Heat Level: N/A Sexual Tension: N/A Interest Level: N/A
Spark of Temptation by Jess Haines - 4.5/5 Finally, the main reason I read this anthology! Much like Hunted by the Others, Jess did not disappoint me with this story. It was interesting reading about this universe in another character's point of view.
This, by far, has been one of the most amusing reads in a long, long time for me; a breath of fresh air. I was blinded by tears on multiple occasions at the start (with Sara and Arnold's interactions). When things grew serious in the story, the laughter fizzled away... but then came back towards the end. It was the perfect amount of suspense--both with the couple and the bad guys--and lightheartedness for me.
The one thing I would have liked to see explained a teensy bit further was the part where Joe goes to Sara's house. I understand why was he there, but when he grabs her shoulders, what on earth was he going to say? Was he going to warn her of something else? Was he going to try and give her an address or a name? Something very minor, and it does not affect the plot, but nevertheless, I am still curious.
I have heard a few people give SOT a lower rating because of the lack of sex, but not every single paranormal romance needs to have sex in it. Is it better to have sex and risk making the characters out of character? Or is it better to let them behave as they normally would and have a believable HEA? I believe the latter applies, and if it is done elegantly enough--with lots of sexual tension--then I don't see why people should complain. Hell, it just gives the author an excuse to write another story with sex next time ;)
Enough of my rant, though. Once again, Jess has written an engaging story that furthered my understanding and connection with the characters in her world. It has also increased my excitement for Taken by the Others (which comes out in January).
Sexytime Heat Level: 0/5 - There is no sex in this story. Sexual Tension: 3.5/5 - There was enough to make me antsy for their HEA, but I wasn't dying for them to jump in bed together. Yet. Interest Level: 5/5 - I thought I wouldn't care about Sara/Arnold; I was wrong. Give me more!
My Soul to Take- by Clare Willis - 2/5 I really wanted to like this story. The beginning successfully pulled me in, intriguing me with thoughts of spirituality versus modern medicine. Not my typical sort of read, but the attraction, and then our little spirit rearing his head early on, encouraged me to keep going.
I loved the way Clare effortlessly transported me back in time in the beginning. I felt like I was zoning out with Maggie, only to be jerked back into the present. It was both fun and exciting and reveals a skill at writing to be able to pull something like that off.
I'm not entirely sure what happened after that, though, since for me, the romance was rushed. I was turned off from this completely when they started saying I love you; it was too soon for me and didn't feel natural. They knew each other for about a week-ish, and while, yes, they had to deal with a possession, I didn't feel any urgency or mutually life threatening experience that would speed up the process and intensify their feelings. There's a ghost, he possessed a guy, guy wants to kill ghost, ghost threatening heroine. All of this was stated, but it was stated in a way that had me thinking "so what?"
When they finally had sex? It was lessened because of Maggie's fears of our ghostly friend. Don't expect sex scenes either, it's a fade to black sexytime. Not necessarily bad, but a few readers might be disappointed with the lack of sexual tension and then sex. Personally? I was a bit disappointed. Some sexual tension would have been nice, instead.
The exorcism was also a bit weird. I got confused when Maggie kinda-sorta got possessed. Still not sure what happened there.
I think I might check out some of Clare's other works before I dismiss her due to one novella. It would be interesting to see what she comes up with in a complete novel, where there aren't as many constraints with length.
Sexytime Heat Level: 1/5 - The sex was skipped over in this story. Sexual Tension: 2/5 - The beginning had most of this. Interest Level: 5/5 - the beginning; 2/5 -middle to the end.
The Phoenix Project by Jacquelyn Frank Spice: 2/5 Plot: 2/5 The limited plot in this story was entertaining & I was genuinely curious to see how the story would progress. This story was kind of sci-fi, kind of conspiracy theory. However, I think the ending scene in this story needs to be heavily rewritten/reworked. I don’t think the author intended for this to happen, but the last spice scene was not CNC, as I think the author intended it to be, but it was sexual assault. The characters involved mended their relationship afterward & during the scene, the woman involved seemed to be teetering on providing & rescinding her consent at the same time.
Crystal Dreams by Kate Douglas Spice: 3.5/5 Plot: 4/5 The spice scenes here are definitely more vanilla, but the chemistry between the two main characters in this story is undeniable. This had me blushing & giggling like a schoolgirl, loving every second of it. The plot was pretty reasonable, but given the nature of the intent for the book, it was still pretty good in relation to those standards. This story also had a sci-fi feel to it, but more so on the fantasy route.
Spark of Temptation by Jess Haines Spice: 0.5/5 Plot: 4.5/5 For a sexy anthology, this story has absolutely no spice to it. However, & maybe my love for mysteries shines through as bias, the plot absolutely makes up for it. This plot was definitely mystery & suspense more than it was a romance. The slight romance that is there leans more toward a slow burn.
My Soul to Take by Claire Willis Spice: 2/5 Plot: 3/5 This last story absolutely needed a content warning in it. Whereas the first story didn’t seem to intend on conveying sexual assault, this story had an intentional scene that detailed sexual assault on the main female character. She then has to cope with that trauma for the rest of the story &, ultimately, the rest of her life. This story was a paranormal mystery that had a pretty good plot, but that scene in particular came out of nowhere, at least to me, & knocked it down quite a bit.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I enjoyed Jacquelyn Frank's "The Phoenix Project" and if it was by it's self or the complete series in a book (not e-book) I would buy it & keep it to reread, but I will NOT be keeping this book. It had been my sisters, & when she passed, I had bought her books. I enjoyed Kate Douglas's "Crystal Dreams." I have another copy of this story & will reread it. I didn't much care for Jess Haines story. It was boring to me, & I had to make myself finish the story. Clare Willis's story kept my interest. I don't think I would buy the book separately, but would read it again as an added novella in a book.
This was a very good anthology. I enjoyed all 4 stories but my favorites were The Phoenix Project and Crystal Dreams. I also found two new to me authors in Jess Haines and Clare Willis.
In The Phoenix Project you have a little bit of everything: love, sex, death and an evil scientist. The female lead Amara is strong, beautiful (she refused to cut her hair off) and very defiant. She had pulled herself out of the Hell she called childhood and was surviving on her own, until she was kidnapped. She is determined that she is going to do what she can to survive but every day it gets harder for her.
Nick is/was an undercover cop investigating missing children until he was captured by the mad scientist. He is now part of the experiments he was trying to rescue the children from. He is a strong alpha male character and he refuses to give in to them and they are having trouble controlling him.
Both Amara and Nick are the perfect alpha couple to lead this group of Morphate’s into the future. They are forced to deal with their new nature and everything that goes with it, including mating heat and alpha challenges. They realize they are going to have to organize the rescue on their own and that they are going to have to police themselves because no one else will be able to.
The story was interesting and action packed. It had plenty of details but didn’t over state anything. The characters were strong and well developed. As I read the story it incited a range of emotions in me from worry to excitement and the sex scenes were pretty HOT. I wanted them to have their HEA and was pleased with the ending.
In Crystal Dreams the war with the demons continues. Each day they are gaining form and becoming more sentient. Something is drawing the demons to Crystal Dreams and the portal won’t stay closed.
We are introduced to new characters that join the fight against demons. Darius is one of the four Lemurian guards that carry a crystal sword. He is charged with keeping the demons out of Lemurian at all cost. He takes his job seriously and follows the demons to Evergreen where he is attacked by Mari by mistake.
Mari is home to help her parents while her dad recovers from surgery. She moved away but now that she is home, she realizes what she has missed. She doesn’t know what to think when she is attacked by the stray cat her mother has been feeding. The cat isn’t supposed to have red glowing eyes and a double row of teeth. A strange man waving a sword comes in and she takes him down.
One of the things I love about this series is that in each book the females are strong and able to take care of themselves. They fall in love with immortal warriors and each female gains her immortality in a different way. It keeps the stories fresh and new.
With each story I can’t wait to see what’s going to happen. The books are getting better with each one. We are learning more about the Lemurian history in bits and pieces that leave you wanting more. What happened to all the female warriors? I can’t wait to find out. I am looking forward to Starfire when it is released in April 2011.
In Spark of Temptation we are transported into a world where vampires, mages and shifters co-exist with humans. The lead character, Sara is a PI that normally stays in the office doing trace work on the computer. Her partner was injured on their last case dealing with an evil mage so now Sara has found herself out in the field, trying to stay alive.
She is a strong female lead that is capable of taking caring for herself but isn’t afraid to accept help when she needs it. She will do anything to keep her sister safe and ends up in a war between the vampires and the Anti Others Alliance because of this.
The characters are complex and the world is interesting. I enjoyed this book and look forward to reading other books in this series.
In My Soul to Take Maggie is chief resident at a psychiatric hospital. She is used to seeing all kinds of people come through their doors, until she meets Derek. There is something different about his diagnosis; he is possessed, not mentally ill. She is determined to do whatever she can to save him, even if it means calling her sister in New Orleans.
This story was a little slow getting started but about halfway through, I was hooked. The lead character is caring and compassionate but she is hiding something. As the story progresses you see that there is more to her than meets the eye. I really liked the characters; they were well written and had depth to them. The descriptions allow you to imagine the scenery and put yourself there.
Overall I really enjoyed the stories in this anthology and give it 4 flaming hearts.
Nocturnal by Jacquelyn Frank, Kate Douglas, Jess Haines, and Clare Willis Paranormal Romance - Sept. 7, 2010 4 ½ stars
Nocturnal was generally a fantastic paranormal anthology. I enjoyed most of the stories. Most of them are part of the authors' current or due to be released series.
The Phoenix Project In The Phoenix Project Jacquelyn Frank begins a new genetically altered shifter paranormal. Amara has lived a rough life and it only got worse when she was kidnapped and is now being experimented on. When she wakes up and is thrown into a room with a gorgeous cop, named Nick who was also taken, she finds that she can't keep her hands off of him. Their sexual attraction flares and she can't control the fangs and claws that suddenly appear and neither can he! They form a desperate bond but their short happiness is threatened by unscrupulous scientists with armed guards. Can they escape? This was a phenomenal story. I would have bought the book for this story alone. I can't wait for the author's upcoming book to find out more about these amazing and savage shifters. I loved both of the characters and there was so much sexual tension that it was hot, hot, HOT! I could feel how much the characters belonged together. 5 stars
Crystal Dreams In Crystal Dreams Kate Douglas continues her Demon series. Demons enter through a portal to earth. Darius is a Lemurian Guard, 1 of 4 guards with his crystal sword that can kill demons. He is from an alternate plane and decides to track them down before they cause further damage. He hunts them down to a mystical store where he meets an amazing woman named Mari. Although she doesn't believe him at 1st, they soon become a team to combat the demons entering earth. And both of them have an undeniable attraction for each other. This was an excellent story that made me want to know more about Darius and the land he comes from. The crystal sword also captured my imagination. I enjoyed both of the main characters since they were strong and easy to care for. 4 ½ stars
Spark of Temptation In Spark of Temptation Jess Jaines continues her Other series with the human P.I. Sara. Sara is doesn't like working for the Others (vampires, shifters etc) but when she is blackmailed by a powerful vampire to help him she feels she has not choice. But problems ensue when her human boyfriend argues with her not to work with the vampires and they break up. Then she is threatened by the AOA, the Anti-Other Alliance and their plan to undermine the vampires. As Sara comes to lean on a mage for help she must re-evaluate her life and what she thinks of the Others. This story was in 1st person which is good if the main character is interesting but Sara was a very bland character. Also since she was a human she really appeared weak next to the Others and even other humans. So I didn't enjoy this story as much. 3 stars
My Soul to Take In My Soul to Take the author, Clare Willis writes a new and original story about a handsome artist named Derek who has been possessed by a ghost who wants revenge. Unfortunately, Derek finds himself in a psychiatric ward. Feeling helpless and in despair he tries to end his life to prevent the ghost from coming free and taking over his body. But Derek unexpectedly meets a remarkable doctor named Maggie Dillon. Maggie feels a connection to Derek and begins to believe his story of possession but can she save Derek and remove the ghost before it is too late? This was an intriguing read. I loved how the author built upon the story and moved it in directions that were unexpected and entertaining. The story was in 1st person and I thought Maggie was a charming voice to read. 4 ½ stars

I reall enjoyed this one on a personal level. ;) From start to finish, I found myself caught in the pages of this story. The poor people in these labs, the things they've had to suffer, are unimaginable. Until one day, Amara is put into a cell with a very large, and very sexy man...Naked. They know they have been experimented on, but have no idea the event that are about to unfold. Another great read, by Jacquelyn. Thank you for the entertainment.
Crystal Dreams, By: Kate Douglas
Okay...Hmmm. Not sure about this one. About a worrier from another demention, who follows demons into Earths demention to defeat them. He Finds and falls for the women working a "Witch's" shop. Instantly they are attracked to one another. And the story goes on from there. The problem I had, was that it felt rushed. I know this is a short story and most of them are short(duh) but I felt like there was more of a beginning and an ending that I wasnt getting, even though it did start and finish. I know it doesnt make much sence now that I read this, but I felt as if I were missing something from it.
Spark of Temptation, By: Jess Haines
This was much like the story before. I felt like I came into it in the middle of whatever the hell was going on. Grrr. getting a bit irritated.
My Soul to Take, By: Clare Willis
Okay!! I am so done! I didnt even finish this one. How in the hell does one just know they are in love fromt he get go. At least I didnt feel that way. I didnt even feel like I knew the charaters, let alone them knowing one another enough to love. It got to crazy and by the time I was almost done, I couldnt handle it anymore.
The only story in this book I loved was The Pheonix project. That was exciting. I wanted to read more, find out what happened to them, to the other people in the other buildings. Now THAT was interesting.
The Phoenix Project" by Jacquelyn Frank I'm not too sure of this story. The writing was good, the idea intriguing, but the story didn't get off the ground. It was merely a vehicle for some heavy smut (which was good smut I must confess) and when it came to actual non romantic action it faded to black or it was talked about after the fact. Not my favourite of the four.
"Crystal Dreams" by Kate Douglas Nicely written and interesting enough to hold my attention even though it was a bit fluffy and predictable. I didn't feel a connection with Darius and Mari so that's why this story was enjoyable, but nothing more than that.
"Spark of Temptation" by Jess Haines If I can say one negative thing about this story it's that it doesn't fit in with the other stories in this anthology. Where the others are heavy on the romance this story is more focused on the action. I must confess I bought this book for this story as it features my favourite character from 'Hunted by the Others': Arnold. Haines doesn't disappoint in this short story and delivers a suspenseful tale. It probably won't surprise you that this is my favourite story of this anthology.
"My Soul to Take" by Clare Willis This story didn't sound too appealing when reading the blurb, but it surprised me by turning into an engaging read and the second best story from this anthology. I was really concerned about the characters and actually creeped out at times. I will be checking out more books by this author.
This book has four stories by four different authors.
The Phoenix Project by Jacquelyn Frank : Held captive, Amara is subjected to bizarre experiments that test her sanity. But nothing prepares her for being locked away naked with a sexy ex-cop... after they have been pumped full of drugs that increase their sexual appetites.
Crystal Dreams by Kate Douglas : When Lemurian Guard Darius chases a demon spirit to Earth he faces a lethal battle between good and evil. His ally is Mari, a breathtakingly beautiful human who unknowingly hold the key to victory. But before the war is over, Darius's desire for his mortal companion threatens to erupt - and could cost Mari her life.
Spark of Temptation by Jess Haines : Blackmailed in to taking a treacherous case, PI Sara Halloway is thrust into a demon war. Sara seeks guidance from a charismatic mage, but their hunger for one another soon becomes a deadly distraction...and the danger surrounding them only makes their urges more powerful.
My Soul to Take by Clare Willis : New Orleans native Dr. Maggie Dillon thought she left her past behind her - until she's enrtaptured by a handsome patient who has been possessed by a malevolent spirit. To find a cure Maggie revisits her magical roots and unleashes a primal lust too vital to ignore.
3 stars. I only read "Spark of Temptation" by Jess Haines in this anthology since I enjoy the H&W Investigations series and am current through the 5th book .
This one was just okay for me. I think it's because I enjoy Shiarra as a narrator more than Sara. I missed Shiarra's humor and spunk. Sara came across as slightly boring for me. I did, however, enjoy seeing Arnold. There can never be too much Arnold in my opinion. :) I suspect I would have enjoyed this one more if I had read it in order (i.e., right after ).
This story started out kind of weak. I didn't like to overall setting of the science lab, but by the middle when they put the two main lead characters together I started to really like it. I was looking for the series that should come out of this book and I want to read about the brother who should be the main male lead in the next full length novel. I hope she writes it. I am so happy this writer is back. She still has never topped her nightwalker series and I am so happy she is writing more books in that series. I only gave this book a liked it because the beginning was kind of blah for me, but by the end it was a really liked reading experience.
"The Phoenix Project" by Jacquelyn Frank I liked it a lot. It's very steamy, I'll admit, but the dark world she imagines make me wish she'll write a novel.
"Crystal Dreams" by Kate Douglas DNF Too fluffy, way too fluffy.
"Spark of Temptation" by Jess Haines The reason I read this anthology. Great. If you like her series, you'll love this little story in which you can read about Sierra's partners and Jack the White Hat. As usual with Haines, there's humour too.
"My Soul to Take" by Clare Willis DNF After Haines, the style of Ms Willis wasn't what I wanted to read.
"The Phoenix Project" By Jacquelyn Frank was extremely good. Nick and Amara would never have met normally but nothing is normal in labs that treat them like lab rats. The newest experiment has interesting results for Nick and Amara.
"My Soul to Take" by Clare Willis was okay, it is a story of a psych doctor who wants to help a patient who thinks hes possessed. Maggie Dillion starts to think drugs won't help Derek because there is really an evil spirit.
I only read two of these stories, Kate Douglas' and Jacquelyn Frank's. I have read all of Kate's 'Fire" books and wanted the next. It can be read without having read the other novels in the series, and as such makes a nice taste into the world, I'd reccomend reading the others for a fuller understanding of the background.
Frank's story was definitely part of a series. I am curious about this series. I'll have to price it out.
The rating is for "Spark of Temptation," a "by-the-way" story following Hunted by the Others. It featured two of the supporting characters and leads them into romance. Nothing out of the ordinary, except it was very pleasant to have Sara and Arnold come out ahead without turning either one of them into super-heroes. Nicely done.
Spark of Temptation- by Jess Haines *** Finished the story, it was okay, I ended up liking Sara a bit more in this story then I did in the first book. Although now I really want to read the second book
The other story I wanted from this book is Crystal Dreams by Kate Douglas...but I need to read Hellfire before I start this one....so back on the TBR shelf for now
sorry, I don't like it. I usually love jacquelyn frank but not this one. It is 4 authors, starting with jacquelyn. I found myself racing through it because I was bored. The story was fairly good but I was just couldn't really get into it. I didn't get to the other 3 stories. I'll take a break and go back to it later
I don't usually go for anthologies, but each mini-novel in this book was a pretty decent length and gave me ample time to get completely wrapped up in the story before ending it perfectly. Each story in this book (of which there are four total) was incredible and exciting and full of all the things I love in a book!
I love Jacquelyn Frank's novels. She is on my list of go to, can do no wrong, authors. I was intrigued by the world of Morphates and the Dark Cities. I was dismayed when the short story ended almost too abruptly. I hope JF journeys there again. I miss the Shadow Dwellers too! As for the rest of the anthology, I'm ashamed to say I did not partake. My bad ;D
Some of the stories were great. Some of them were incredible! So as a whole, I would give the collaboration a "4." I'm a HUGE fan of the paranormal (vampires, werewolves, witches, etc.) And, I liked that these stories were different from anything I have read before. It also introduced me to a couple of authors I was unfamiliar with. And, I'm looking forward to reading more of their work.
I only read the Jess Haines story and it was ok. I like Sara, but the story seemed forced a little bit for me. I did like relationship changes that she makes and thinks that with these ones she will be a lot more happy.
