Wonderful novella of proletarian Swedish life. In simple, earthy and often funny prose, Fridegård tells the story of Lars Hård, a feckless, brainy romantic who couldn't be any more unsuited to working class life. But though the book was lauded for exposing the cruelties of the Swedish statare system, Fridegård avoided the easy route of simply blaming an unfair society for Lars' troubles, instead subtly illustrating that Lars is himself just as much to blame.

For my Swedish literature class. A well written and captivating story, but still not something I would pick for myself in a library, for example.
